I actually think that if referees are mic'd up it would cause more confusion. When they are explaining things someone will hang onto one particular one word, from what happened in an earlier event, and saying 'you had a different explanation there'.

There is so much pressure on referees. I think VAR should only be for clear offsides - such as the feet - and penalties. I have to protect referees because they are under so much pressure, normally in under a minute, and if everybody can hear what they are saying I think that will put them under more pressure. I don't think he'll get more correct decisions.

If we have to mic up referees our game is officially gone.

That decision could mean that Brighton miss out on something on the Premier League.

That goal should have been allowed to stand.

If Brighton go down, they might never come back up, because of a ridiculous decision.

Lee Mason should have stuck with his first decision, allow the free-kick to go in, and he would have got less stick if he stuck with his first decision and allowed the advantage of a quick free-kick.

I just think that Lee Mason panicked. The only reason I think he went over to the monitor was to buy him time, and maybe in the hope it would beam him somewhere else in the world.

We all make mistakes though, it was just that one was particularly horrific.

  7. 'We have to improve at home'published at 19:18 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2021

    Everton v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

Everton have won just four of 12 matches at Goodison Park, taking one point from the last 15 available on their own pitch, and they are 15th in the home form table.

Boss Carlo Ancelotti knows that needs to change if they are to compete for a Champions League spot.

“The opinion I have is that away we are more focused defensively, we do less mistakes,” he said.

“To win away is so important so you are more focused defensively, you avoid problems – at home maybe we are thinking the game is easier and we are not able to keep the concentration we have away.

“Defensively we have to be more focused when we are at home because at least if you are able to keep the game 0-0 the games which we lost against Newcastle, Fulham, West Ham and Leeds we would have four more points and having four more points would climb the table a lot.

“If we want to fight for the European position we have to improve our home run at Goodison. The players are really focused for this season, really focused where we are. They know where we are, where we can be and what they have to do to be in a position to play Europe next season.”

  8. New ground gets the go aheadpublished at 19:15 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2021

    Everton v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

What do you do when you can't win at home? Build a new one...

Yes, Everton's plans for a new 52,000-seater stadium have been unanimously approved by city councillors.

The club said the Bramley-Moore Dock site will be a "world-class addition" to the city's waterfront and hopes to host games there in 2024.

The £500m scheme which it's claimed will create 15,000 jobs will now go to the government for the final say.

Historic England had objected to the new stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock saying it could harm the city's heritage but this was dismissed by the city's planning committee.

Southampton's Premier League status is surely safe, but the Saints will want to address their recent slide.

The visitors are seven points above 18th-placed Fulham, who are on a resurgent run, but importantly have three other sides between them and the drop.

Win their game tonight and Ralph Hasenhuttl's side will climb above Crystal Palace into 13th and find themselves as close to the European spots as the relegation ones.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl wants his team to stop being “too nice” as they look to end a run of eight league games without a win.

“We are definitely sometimes too nice, or we have been in the last week when we have an opposition player laying in our box and then we play the ball out and when the opposition doesn’t win the ball back, they make tactical fouls,” he said.

“To push this is something in your behaviour and the behaviour we have here is too nice.

“This is hard to change as this is our mentality and the only problem is that you always get punished when you are correct and stick to the rules in football.

“We are nasty in the sense of being aggressive on the ball and attacking, but in other parts we are definitely too nice.”

Yerry Mina and Jean-Philippe Gbamin are the only absentees.

Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a fractured ankle sustained against Leeds.

Takumi Minamino is out with a hamstring strain but could be fit within a week.

Everton topped the Premier League table and were on the climb in the charts too after a sparkling start to the season, though the Toffees' campaign has hit a sticky patch with their recent home form holding Carlo Ancelotti's side back.

The seemingly endless cycle of football continues tonight with Everton and Southampton picking up the baton as the Premier League makes a pit stop at Goodison Park.

It's the place the Toffees call home, for now, though recent results on the blue side of Stanley Park suggest they might have preferred to hit the road.

Carlo Ancelotti's European hopefuls entertain a stuttering Southampton side who are looking to get their season back on track after failing to win in their past eight league games.
