"Fras was the last one who had clean sheets, momentum is on his side and we need that today," he said.

Everton's strange season continues with Carlo Ancelotti staring an unwanted record in the face.

Fresh from a first win at Anfield in 22 years, a fourth consecutive home loss in the league would be a first for the Italian, who has had plenty of thumbs up from fans down Crosby beach since beating Liverpool. When he's not burning them off on his bike, that is.

What does he put the poor home form down to? "Maybe we are thinking that the game is easier, and we are not able to keep the concentration that we had away," he said on Thursday.

With Allan back in the side for the first time since 16 December, they should have some extra snap in midfield.

It is an interesting quirk of Everton's season that they have secured more points against ‘Big Six’ teams (14 from eight matches) than they have against those who started the weekend in 15th or below (13 from eight).

“If I have to say what happened until now I have to say I have to be worried because we are going to play against the teams at the bottom where we had more problems,” said boss Carlo Ancelotti.

“We have to be able to solve these kind of problems. I am convinced it is a really competitive league, a really difficult league.

“If we look at the results in Europe then the English teams did fantastic: the three teams in the Champions League won – three away games: Liverpool won, Chelsea won, Man City won.

“United did really well against Real Sociedad, Tottenham won easy, Arsenal won – that means this league is a really high level.

“You have to consider also that the teams at the bottom are doing well also. To play against Fulham, to play against Burnley, is not easy at all and to play against Southampton is not easy.”

Carlo Ancelotti says James Rodriguez has a "really light problem" and he only expects the playmaker to miss this game.

"The team on the pitch is good, we have Allan back, Dominic Calvert-Lewin back so the team is good," he said.

"The run at home is not good and we have a great opportunity tonight, we are playing a team not in a good moment but still a good team - I said to the players be worried, because we have to work hard if we want to win."

Remember that night on 4 January where the Prime Minister's lockdown announcement was briefly interrupted by what turned out to be Danny Ings' winner at Anfield?

Since that victory, which took the Saints to sixth in the table and level on points with fourth-placed Tottenham, they have only added one more point in the last eight games.

Time to turn it around against an Everton side struggling at home? Ings looks up for it if the warm-up is anything to go by.

Southampton are in a slump and this is a tough trip for them, even if Danny Ings does return to their team.

Tactically, Everton got things spot on against Liverpool and it was pretty much the perfect all-round performance.

Now they need to follow it up. That long-awaited win at Anfield means nothing if they don't follow it up with three points here.

    Prediction: 2-0

  17. Saints can't buy a winpublished at 19:35 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2021

    • Southampton have equalled their longest winless run of eight league matches under Ralph Hasenhuttl, only managing a solitary point in those games.
    • Saints have taken just seven points from their past 13 games, having previously accrued 22 points from a possible 30.
    • Hasenhuttl's side have lost four successive league away fixtures, conceding 17 goals in the process.
    • They have won only two of nine matches against the current top seven clubs, one of which came versus Everton.
    • Saints have dropped a league-high 18 points from winning positions.
    • Danny Ings has contributed to seven goals in his nine league starts against Everton, scoring five and providing two assists.

Saying Southampton are safe is incredibly premature. It's only seven points and Saints have to play all the teams below them except Newcastle who they already lost to. Fulham will catch them. There's nothing special about this team. They'll occupy 18th. Trust me.

The referees are the best around - they are highly trained. If they are authentic, and they are mic'd up, and explain what they are seeing in real time then I think they would get a lot more sympathy because they are open and honest. They would be admired for it, because it would clear things up.

Referees being mic'd up would transform the game.
