    Chance!

Saints get forward through a long ball, which is poorly cleared by Dan Burn. A low cross into the middle sets up Stuart Armstrong for a shot that is tame and saved.

    Southampton 0-0 Brighton

A lovely Brighton move presents a couple of chances for Leandro Trossard that are blocked in the box. The flag is up, though, calling the man who set up the opportunities - Neal Maupay - rightly offside.

    Southampton 0-0 Brighton

Early half-chance for Saints as Che Adams gets a relatively free header in the box from Ryan Bertrand's cross. The ball was just behind the striker, though, so his aim and power are off.

Brighton boss Graham Potter to BBC Sport:

It’s the next match so it’s very important. I think we’ve got 11 games to go and a lot of football to play but the most important game is always the next one.

We are meeting a good opponent so we have to play well, match their intensity and do the things we’ve done well and improve the things we haven’t done well.

    Mark Hughes
Former Southampton manager on BBC One

I think the result against Sheffield United was massive for them because clearly their form has fallen off a cliff.

They have found it difficult to get points on the board but that win has got them to 33 points and I’ve looked at their fixtures and I think they will be okay.

  9. VAR controversy? No way!published at 11:56 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

In the reverse fixture between these two, Southampton left the Amex with all three points, courtesy of a 2-1 win in December. That doesn't quite cover the whole story, though.

Because of the sheer number of VAR controversies, your neutral fan may not remember the decision that ultimately decided the game, with Saints awarded a late penalty for a late foul on Southampton full-back Kyle Walker-Peters.

Pretty sure Southampton and (definitely) Brighton fans will remember, though. Walker-Peters' momentum from a Solly March challenge outside the penalty area carried him forward as the players tangled and tumbled into the box.

Referee David Coote initially awarded the visitors a free-kick but despite multiple camera angles appearing inconclusive his decision was overturned - allowing Danny Ings to score from the spot.

    Southampton v Brighton (12:00 GMT)

    Dion Dublin
Former Man Utd striker on BBC One

Brighton are looking over their shoulders, down rather than up. Fulham are right on their heels and they have to start getting things right.

Brighton play some really good football, they have a good, young manager who will be in the game a long time but they cannot put the ball in the back of the net and that’s their big problem.

'In off the backside' klaxon. Mark Hughes has just said Brighton need one to go in like this to get them going.

Anyone remember a goal going in off someone's backside to get a previously profligate side firing?

  12. Heckingbottom at the wheelpublished at 11:52 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

Under-23s manager Paul Heckingbottom will take charge of the Blades for the rest of the campaign.

Heckingbottom made a bit of a name for himself as Barnsley boss between 2016 and 2018. He had a bit of a shocker at Leeds and Hibernian but now has a chance to give his reputation a bit of a boost.

Let's be honest, he's not going to keep them up, but a win here or there would do him and the club a world of good.

They start today at... (checks notes)... Leicester. Oh.

Oh Sheffield United, what an almighty mess.

Yesterday, the news was confirmed that Chris Wilder, the hometown hero who had led the club from League One to the Premier League was leaving his role as Blades manager by mutual consent.

They may currently be bottom of the table and surely heading back to the Championship, but that only takes a small amount of the shine off what has been a remarkable near five years in charge at the club.

"We are confident that all Blades fans around the world will join us in thanking Chris for his hard work, commitment and expertise in driving the club," said a Blades statement.

I'm not sure the Sheffield United fans will be quite so generous in their words to the board once they get the chance to gather in numbers.

This early game sees Brighton boss Graham Potter face the only side with whom he earned Premier League playing experience.

The former full-back played eight times for Southampton in the 1996-97 season, in which they finished 16th.

That was also the season that then Saints boss Graeme Souness took a phone call from "George Weah" recommending he sign his cousin. He subsequently did and made a fool of himself as the aforementioned cousin was definitely not a cousin of Weah, nor did he possess a millionth of his talent.

    Southampton v Brighton (12:00 GMT)

As for Brighton, well they are on a six-match winless run in all competitions, losing the last three in a row. They could, in fact, suffer four successive league defeats for the first time since April 2019 today.

On the plus side, four of their five Premier League wins this season have come in away games.

  18. Ouchpublished at 11:37 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Southampton v Brighton (12:00 GMT)

While history might be on their side in this one, Southampton's recent form is not.

They have only won once in 11 league matches, drawing one and losing nine, have conceded 30 Premier League goals in 2021 - nine more than any other side and have dropped a league-high 18 points from winning positions this season - that's one more than Brighton.

That is quite the charge sheet.

  19. History with the Saintspublished at 11:34 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Southampton v Brighton (12:00 GMT)

There is a big historical plus for Southampton going into this game. They are unbeaten in all seven Premier League meetings with their south-coast rival, winning three and drawing four.

Brighton have won just one of the past 13 encounters in all competitions.

No such problems for Southampton. They do have goalscorers (although the main man isn't fit today).

What they don't have, though, is a solid defence...
