Frank Lampard speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live:"We knew a win would get us safe. First part of the game we were great. When it was 11 v 11 we were great. I didn't see anything other than a win at that point but the red card changed the game".

On the red card:"It's a big lesson for him. The possibility of the penalty with Richarlison, all I hear is my players dive, but a shirt tug is a shirt tug. No complaints, once that is given it's a red card. 70 minutes in the Premier League with 10 men is too hard to sustain. You have to ask for everything to go your way and it didn't. The effort was brilliant and I can't complain. The effort and spirit was great, the reality is we need to go again on Thursday."

On Thursday's game against Crystal Palace:"It's mental and physical. It's in our hands so we want to take stock tonight. If we win on Thursday then we are in the Premier League next year. I have belief in these players and these fans that they will turn up with the same attitude that they did today."

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank speaking to BBC Sport: "It was very difficult today. It was an unbelievable atmosphere.

"They went 1-0 up and we talked about staying cool and in the game. It was a clear red card but sometimes you don't see teams winning against 10-men when they sit back.

"Second half we did fantastic. We were patient and in the end we got the goals. We made a change, we made it clear how we wanted to attack with more crosses - and the third goal comes from a cross.

"The whole season we have said we want to finish as high as possible. we will do our very best to win on Sunday."

Everton boss Frank Lampard to Sky Sports: "Disappointing. The start was great, we could have scored three. The red card changes the game completely.

"It was as criticial as can be. We had complete control.

"There was a possible penalty in the build-up for a clear pull on Richarlison's shirt. You wonder if a player should go down because it's a penalty.

"The ball goes down the other end and it's a mistake by Jared Braithwaite to let him run behind."

On his half-time instructions: "Just to dig in. We did it against Newcastle although for less time. It's a big ask to ask players to play for 70 minutes a man down against a good team. The players gave every drop. The fans gave every drop.

    "Big circumstances went against us.

"Hopefully Michael Keane will be back on Thursday. I'm not hopeful of Mina or Godfrey. We had three centre-backs out today. it's very difficult. Seamus played there. We played a back three at the end. Everyone has given everything,

"The important thing is we have a positve attitude. it's in our hands at Goodison again hopefully with 11 on the pitch.

"The effort was incredible. The players deserve a little rest. The legs are hanging off a bit with all the injuries."

Brentford boss Thomas Frank to Sky Sports: "Crazy game. This is what we love about football. Everything is possible. It went our way. I know it's not nice to be on the other side.

"They did very well at the beginning, unbelievable atmosphere. The character and coollness we showed throughout the game helped us. To turn around is very impressive.

"No doubt it [the first red card] was a crucial moment in the game. It was a clear red card. Football is small moments you need to handle.

"There have been a lot of situations this season where teams went down to 10 men and the other team didn't win. It's not easy.

"We'd love to do that, to finish top 10 would be remarkable."

  7. 'The red card changes everything'published at 19:00 British Summer Time 15 May 2022

    FT: Everton 2-3 Brentford

    Everton

Everton manager Frank Lampard to BBC Sport: "It's pretty simple. We had control of the game. We looked like we would score more goals and win the game. The red card changes everything. You can't play with 10-men for 70 minutes in the Premier League and expect much more [from the players].

"Maybe Richarlison should go down more easily with the shirt pull but no complaints about the red card, it is a mistake by Jarrad [Branthwaite].

"The goal they scored from a corner is not a meant header and then they score again really quickly. The fans have given everything and we must go again on Thursday.

"Hopefully Michael Keane, who was sick overnight, comes back. We have three centre-halves out and it's very hard to sustain results like that. We will fight until the end no matter what bodies we have left.

"The first 20 minutes felt comfortable. The crowd were flying. No complaints about the players. We just have to rest a bit, stay positive, it's in our hands and we'll go again."

Having watched this live feed through this match, I feel I have to step in and check these embarrassing, hide-behind-the-sofa cringe comments from blinkered Everton fans. Richarlison also had hold of Ajer's shirt for the supposed "foul". Unlucky, but Braithwaite was last man, and the law says that's a red. The problems for Everton were brought upon themselves. We'll beat Leeds next week though, don't you worry

  9. Eriksen's influence - the key statspublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 15 May 2022

    • Everton have conceded 59 goals this season, their joint-most in a 38-game Premier League campaign alongside 2000-01.
    • Since Christian Eriksen’s first start for Brentford on March 5th, only Tottenham (26), Liverpool (26) and Manchester City (24) have won more Premier League points than the Bees (22).
    • There were 121 seconds between Brentford equalising through Yoane Wissa and taking the lead with Rico Henry’s strike. In fact, Brentford have gained the most points from losing positions in the Premier League this term (15).
    • Richarlison both scored and assisted in a Premier League game for Everton for only the second time and for the first time since August 2021 versus Southampton, also at Goodison Park.

If that was previous to Frank Lampard coming in I think they would have lost the game and lost it far more easily. It's all ifs, buts and maybes but if Everton kept 11 men on the pitch they would have won the game today I have no doubt about it. Because of the way they started, because of the crowd, because of the togetherness in the squad. It was a tough afternoon for them.

Fair play to Brentford, they deserved to win the game because they found a way to break Everton down. They have certainly shown they really can attack these games and keep destiny in their hands.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin speaking to Sky Sports: "Very frustrating. We started so well. A big decision has gone against us and it was difficult from there. We got the lead and we were defending, defending but unfortunately it went against us today."

On his opening goal: "It came off me but unfortunately it hasn't amounted to anything. A lot of disappointment having given so much today but we have to go again Thursday. We want to do it for ourselves, the manager and the fans.

"We dug deep. We showed spirit and we grafted. It is a long time to keep defending. We just have to pick ourselves up but we have the opportunity on Thursday to go again.

"It's still in our hands. The chat after the game was positive. We have to rest and recover and work as hard as we possibly can on Thursday."

Brentford's Rico Henry to Sky Sports: "It was a battle. Thomas Frank said it was going to be hostile. They came out fast. The manager said we had to match the intensity and that's what we did.

"After that [red card] we had more possession. We knew we had to dig in there and stick together.

"Thomas Frank asked me to push on a bit when they went a man down and it paid off. He said keep moving the ball. We had to be patient.

"That's our goal, we want to finish in the top 10. We'll bring it to Leeds."

Going down to 10 men, I still think the circumstances surrounding it should have been a penalty kick which meant Branthwaite wouldn't have seen red. Having said that, they clawed it back, managed to get themselves in front and with a player of the quality of Christian Eriksen, you know the quality of delivery he can put in. I think Everton have shown enough in the energy and application. They lost the game but they showed they are up for the fight and they will be fighting to the end.

It is still very much in Everton's hands with teams below them needing to pick up points and just three points from two games enough to secure survival for the Toffees, but it will mean a few more nervous days ahead.
