  6. Brereton Diaz for Brentford?published at 11:56 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2022

    Brentford v Tottenham (12:30 GMT)

    Phil Parry
    BBC Radio London

Brentford have always had a succession plan. When Neal Maupay went they knew Ollie Watkins was coming through. Then when he was getting moved on they were always looking at Ivan Toney.

They have gone domestically for strikers since Maupay. They have moved on and that’s why maybe people are bigging up Ben Brereton-Diaz.

Brentford are going to have to go into the market, it’s as simple as that. I’d be stunned if they don’t have a back-up plan as we speak.

They just don’t have the firepower and that’s a massive loss. They will have multiple names and you know Brentford don’t mind looking across Europe and in leagues people don’t look at too deeply.

Ivan Toney is fully focused on scoring goals for Brentford despite the gambling charges hanging over him, says manager Thomas Frank.

The striker has been charged with 262 alleged breaches of betting rules by the Football Association. Toney, who missed out on a place in England's World Cup squad despite his fine form this season, has until 4 January to respond to the charges.

"He is training well, he is doing everything he can to prepare and be ready to score goals on Boxing Day against Tottenham," adds Frank.

There are two England strikers under the spotlight in the first game of the day.

Off the field Ivan Toney is facing charges for alleged breaches of the FA's betting rules. On the field his last contribution was both goals in a famous win against Manchester City but that wasn't enough to earn him a World Cup spot.

Meanwhile, Harry Kane will surely be burning to put memories of a certain World Cup penalty far behind him.

Just nine points separate the bottom 12 sides, with Wolves propping everybody up.

Only six teams have ever been bottom at Christmas and stayed up - with half of those in the first three Premier League campaigns - but Wolves will be looking to buck that trend with the newly-appointed Julen Lopetegui at the helm.

Everton have stuck by manager Frank Lampard despite sitting 17th off the back of two consecutive defeats, and David Moyes remains West Ham boss even though they have lost three on the trot and sit just a point above the bottom three.
