However, John Egan struck deep in stoppage time to secure a draw for promotion-chasing Sheffield United.

Portsmouth are 12th in League One, nine points off the play-off places, after a run of one win in 14 outings.

The decision comes after Sunday's 3-1 home defeat by Charlton Athletic extended their winless run to nine league matches.

Cowley's assistant, his brother Nicky, has also departed Fratton Park.

The result means Sheffield United's five-match winning streak is over.

However, the Blades remain in a commanding position in the race for promotion.

Paul Heckingbottom's men are now nine points clear of thrid-placed Blackburn, with a vastly superior goal difference.

QPR end a run of four straight defeats at home.

But this might feel like another loss after conceding to practically the last kick of the game.

But it was a much-improved display from the Rs after a poor showing in their 3-0 defeat by Luton last Thursday.

The visitors come again.

Sheffield United pass it round at the back but the Rs sit back and are hard to break down.

In the end a crossfield pass bounces out of play to cheers from the home crowd.

Lyndon Dykes then wins a free-kick on halfway to alleviate the pressure for a few moments.

Jayden Bogle comes on for Anel Ahmedhodzic for the visitors.

The final stages could get nervy for QPR fans as the Blades push for an equaliser.

Really good claim by QPR keeper Seny Dieng to pluck a deep cross out of the night sky.

Daniel Jebbison then bursts into the box and wins a corner for the Blades as his low cross is cut out.

Replays show Iliman Ndiaye tangled legs with Rob Dickie in the box following a smart bit of control, but the ball had got away from the forward and the contact was fairly inconsequential.

QPR have brought on Albert Adomah for Tyler Roberts.
