Barnsley's Slobodan Tedic is the latest to get running repairs as he takes a knock backing into a defender.

While he is down, both teams take on refreshments for a drinks break.

It's another warm day in the capital and the action is certainly heating up.

Barnsley haven't had the early opportunities that Sheffield Wednesday have, but Adam Phillips blazes their best chance well over from inside the box.

Slobodan Tedic did well to knock a cross down for Phillips, but the end product is a wild half-volley over the bar.

Wednesday have started where they left off in their play-off semi-final second leg.

Every time they get the ball near the Tykes' penalty area, it feels like they could score.

Barnsley's defence was formidable against Bolton. They're going to need to match that at the very least if they're to keep the Owls out today.

Barnsley deal with the initial corner, but the danger isn't over yet.

The ball is recycled back onto the box and sits up nicely for Dominic Iorfa. He does well to get an effort on target, but Harry Isted is equal to it.

A big moment for the Owls, that.

The game's first big chance falls for Sheffield Wednesday.

A poor clearance from Jordan Williams finds Barry Bannan at the top of the box. His shot is blocked.

During the build-up we measured these two sides up against one another by looking a head-to-heads for the season.

Barnsley have the upper hand there, but coming into this game it is Sheffield Wednesday that are the ones boasting real form.

They have won five of their past six games, while Barnsley's only win in their past five was the semi-final second leg victory against Bolton to get them to Wembley.

Both sides are feeling their way through the early minutes.

Barnsley's Harry Isted is the first goalkeeper to get his hands on the ball as a cross is chipped in to the near post and gathered safely.

It certainly has the blood and thunder feel of a derby.

These two could hardly have got through their play-off semi-finals in more contrasting ways.

Barnsley took a 1-1 draw with Bolton into their second leg at Oakwell and put in a wonderfully organised defensive performance to win 1-0 in South Yorkshire.

Wednesday... Well, they got taken apart 4-0 at Peterborough and then won on penalties at Hillsborough after winning 5-1 after extra time in a play-off classic.

Owls and neutrals will hope today is a repeat of that. Barnsley fans? Less so.

This occasion will be etched into South Yorkshire football folklore for years to come.

The questions ahead of this one are many and varied, such as: Can Wednesday use their heroic comeback against Peterborough to inspire them? Can Barnsley outwit the Owls for a third time this season?

The Reds are quite happy to claim the underdog tag but from a neutral's perspective I don’t really think there’s an outstanding favourite.

The game provides such an intriguing contest; beating the Reds' high press will be key for Darren Moore’s side. Barnsley boss Michael Duff has already spoken of ‘the ways’ to beat Wednesday, who generally like to play it out from the back. It’s not inconceivable that one will have a surprise in store for the other.

And all of that is before you factor in the magnitude of the occasion, the derby element, the fans, and the emotion of playing at Wembley.

  18. Can Barnsley get back to second tier... again?published at 14:52 British Summer Time 29 May 2023

Barnsley v Sheff Wed (15:00 BST)

No team has played as many second-tier games as Barnsley.

The Tykes are miles out in front when it comes to time spent in the Second Division/Division One/the Championship.

The South Yorkshire side have played 3,286 games at that level, a whopping 660 more than the team in second.

What's even more remarkable is that despite spending all those years playing just below the top flight, they have only spent a single season in the lead division. Danny Wilson's side enjoyed a sole season in the Premiership in 1997-98.

If the Reds do go up today, then all three of the teams to have played the most games in England's second tier will be there next season.

Hull City are second on the list, while relegated Premier League side Leicester are third.

    How long have you got?

Wednesday, who had finished fourth in League One in 2021-22 only to lose to Sunderland in the play-offs, made a solid enough start to the season.

However, a 2-1 defeat at Plymouth on 4 October proved to be the catalyst for a club-record 23-match unbeaten run and, going into mid-March, promotion looked a near certainty.

Although they dropped to second with a 4-2 defeat at Barnsley on 17 March, they still had two games in hand on league leaders Plymouth.

The Owls followed the Reds reverse with a shock 1-0 defeat at bottom side Forest Green and then drew their subsequent three matches.

A run of five wins from their final six matches was enough for 96 points but, for the first time in EFL history, that was not enough for automatic promotion as the Pilgrims and Ipswich took the top two spots.

That left Darren Moore's men having to face a Peterborough side who they had finished 19 points and three places above in the regular season.

What followed will go down in EFL and club history forevermore, as Posh thumped the Owls 4-0 in the first leg to leave their promotion dreams in tatters.

No team had ever overcome a first-leg deficit of more than two goals in the history of the play-offs but, roared on by a packed Hillsborough, Wednesday led 2-0 at half-time and Liam Palmer made it 4-4 on aggregate with the final kick of the 90 minutes.

Darren Ferguson's men re-took the lead in extra time but Callum Paterson poked home to send the game to penalties and the home side prevailed 5-3 in the shoot out to spark wild scenes of jubilation.

Tykes boss Michael Duff has overseen a complete turnaround in the club's fortunes this season after arriving from Cheltenham in the summer.

Relegated from the Championship with a whimper last season - they picked up just 30 points from 46 games - they have spent the vast majority of this campaign battling for a top-six berth.

A club-record run of nine successive home victories through to April briefly opened up the possibility of an automatic promotion, only for a 3-0 home reverse by Ipswich to put an abrupt end to that.

With the top two spots gone, Duff turned his attentions to the play-offs and rested key players in the final two games of the season.

It was a move that paid dividends as his side deservedly beat Bolton 2-1 on aggregate in the semi-final.
