Burnley

"We had five guys starting for the first time for the club, one guy starting his first debut in his career...

"Overall we had chances, we knew it was going to be tough so I think we need to take the positives from this game.

"You can't feel good with a defeat, but I have seen enough to know we have made progress since the last time we played them.

"This is going to be the worst we play this season, this team is only going to get stronger."

Burnley

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany speaking to Sky Sports:

"You can surprise the main man [Guardiola] sometimes, but he is the one that surprises the most.

"There's nothing more than committing to an idea and a game plan. Then in the game we concede after three minutes and you have to live with the consequences.

"We had that spell in the first half where we created dangerous possession, chances and recovered balls in dangerous areas. And another spell in the second half.

"Those moments where you have momentum you have to do something and we were dangerous but not dangerous enough. Against the best team in the world it is always going to be difficult.

"I said to the team before the game, you want the result, everyone does, but you want to get something out of the game, a moment a tackle, something to build on."

Burnley

"It's a mentality thing as well. Today has to be the worst we are ever going to be this season because this team is focused on progress.

"I don't know who in my squad will make it to the top level, but I know some of them will. It takes hard work every day, this squad wants to learn and progress together.

"That is the mission for us. Results come because you do the work in the background, and we have that here."

Manchester City

Man City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to Sky Sports:

On the chat with Erling Haaland at half time:

"He always wants the ball to him, every time, but this is not possible with man to man. Put the balls in behind and go and run. But when you have few minutes left [of the half], Bernardo was right to not give him the ball.

"Not an incident, just understanding the connection and learning what we have to do. No problem at all, he scored two goals and he's happy."

Burnley

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany, speaking to MOTD: "They are the dominant side in the world at the moment. I said we had to get something out of the game, ideally the result, but have to get something. I feel we can take positives from the game. Our team is only going to get better.

"It is like in life, you tell your kids you fall down you get back up. When you have a tough time you go again, you go harder and together.

"The most important thing is five news players made their debut and we are only going to get better.

"The players we have and the way we play we can improve them. We are going to get better every time."

The biggest part of his game that he is developing with Pep is the all round communication with his fellow players. He is having the challenge himself to improve his game, and he's scoring the goals!"

On some booing of the taking of the knee before kick off: "For my side obviously, I am very clear on this, I am for inclusion always. But this is about progress. It is not new, it has happened in the past. The amount of booing is a fraction of what it used to be. I am not saying it is good enough but we need time. We are a family in the end and we need time to grow together.

"We are one family, it was a lot less tonight than it used to be and I am sure in one year it will be even less."

Manchester City

Man City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to Sky Sports:

On Kevin de Bruyne's injury:

"Yes he is injured again. Same issue [as last season] he told me. So that is a problem. We need to go back and reflect with the medical team.

"He was feeling really good and playing really good in the first minutes. But unfortunately he is injured again."

"Maybe [he shouldn't have started], but what happens in the first 15 minutes could also have come in the 50th, 65th, 70th minute..."

Manchester City

Man City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to Sky Sports:

"Really good. The first games are so important to see how our vibes are. To come here to a promoted side is always so tricky. We didn't expect them to play with five at the back but we found the goal.

"After the goal we struggled, created problems for ourselves. But then Bernardo and Kovacic drop deeper, we get possession going and then we improved.

"The key thing in the game was the attacking with the full backs and then the rest getting inside the pitch and creating problems.

On where things went wrong after the opening goal:

"We gave passes away, the players need to read what we have to do. Against man to man [marking] you cannot always play to the closest player. You have to play more passes and go more direct.

"The second half Erling was magnificent with the man to man. After we make more passes and Phil, Julian, everybody was really really good."

• Burnley have lost each of their last 12 meetings with Manchester City in all competitions, since a 1-1 draw in February 2018 in the Premier League. It’s now the Clarets’ outright longest losing streak against any side.
• Burnley’s Anass Zaroury is the first player to be sent off in a team's opening game of a Premier League season since Morgan Schneiderlin in 2019-20 for Everton.

Manchester City

Man City striker Erling Haaland speaking on Sky Sports:

"Good to start again after two months without football. And good to start with a win of course.

"I think we were quite controlled, for the first game of the season, I think we did quite well. We are still kind of in the 'starting phase' of this marathon, but it is about not stressing, relaxing and focusing on ourselves.

On possibly continuing where he left off:

"We'll see about that. I just need to keep on working, trying to relax, not think too much about things, not focus on the negatives.

On his second goal:

"Julian [Alvarez] had a lot of space inside the 16 yard box so I knew if I got the ball I was going to shoot because I was close [to goal]. So I was just trying to think about finishing it if I got the ball, and err I did it quite well! Was a good finish eh?"

Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to MOTD: "We started well. We found a goal, we struggled a bit after. We gave away balls, our pass created problems but after a while we played much, much better."

On De Bruyne: "He was injured again unfortunately. Same place and position as the Champions League and he will be out for a while."

On talking to Haaland: "He wanted the ball in behind to him and that ball hasn't to be in behind. Sometimes you have to be patient to find the right moment.

"He was not frustrated, I am not frustrated. In football it happens. Don't be dramatic."

On the game: "The first game against a newly promoted will always be difficult. They give everything but we were fortunate to find a goal so quick. We gave chance to them and we have to improve."

The big negative for Manchester City was the injury to Kevin de Bruyne.

Pep Guardiola sounds understandably downbeat about that: "Unfortunately he is injured again".

Tonight was never going to be the night to judge Burnley.

Man City were comfortable in the second half, saw the game out without too much fuss.

That's why they're champions.

The officials are booed by the home fans as they make their way off the pitch. Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, goes over to applaud the travelling fans as Manchester City kick off the new season with a win.

Manchester City's title defence kicks off in the perfect fashion as they sweep aside newly-promoted Burnley.

They are top of the table and two-goal Erling Haaland is top of scoring charts.
