I was at the Community Shield last weekend and I think it is fair to say Manchester City were not at their best.

They did, to be fair, look like a side that was a little bit behind Arsenal in terms of pre-season preparations due to their late finish to the season, but I fully expect them to be on it tonight.

Erling Haaland didn't manage a shot at Wembley and had just 13 touches of the ball, but he fired a blank on his debut in the Community Shield last season and then banged in two on his Premier League debut.

Plus, he scored a hat-trick in his only previous game against Burnley, a 6-0 win in last season's FA Cup quarter-finals, so I fully expect him to be back to being the Haaland we all know tonight.

    "Forget about it!"

No, I'm not quoting Donnie Brasco, that's what Pep Guardiola has told his players in terms of thinking about another Treble attempt.

Manchester City, of course, won the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup in an incredible season last term.

Understandably, Guardiola believes that will be difficult to repeat.

"It is once in a lifetime," he said. "It will not be possible to do what we did last season."

Will Josko Gvardiol make his Manchester City debut?

Burnley could hand debuts to summer signings such as James Trafford, Zeki Amdouni, Sander Berge and Dara O'Shea.

Michael Obafemi, who has joined after a loan spell at Turf Moor last season, is ruled out with a hamstring issue.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says Croatia centre-back Josko Gvardiol is available for his first appearance after joining from RB Leipzig for £77m.

Fellow defender Nathan Ake is fit despite missing the Community Shield against Arsenal with a minor injury.

Midfielder Mateo Kovacic could make his league debut for City after moving from Chelsea in June for an initial £25m.

We'll get the full team news at 19:00 BST.

Micah Richards: Their squad is still better than everyone else's. They won't win the Treble again, but they will win the Premier League.

Chris Sutton: The other top clubs have done some very good work in this transfer window but you can't look past City for the title. Guardiola evolves something every year - some tweak to his tactics will emerge and another player always seems to step in and become key.

Fara Williams: City are at the top for as long as Guardiola stays there.

Chris Waddle: The only thing that could stop City or let them down is complacency or fatigue, and I just don't see either happening under Guardiola. It's theirs to lose.

  6. A great way to startpublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 11 August 2023

Burnley v Man City (20:00 BST)

I'll stop you right now, I know there's life beyond the Premier League and I know for many fans domestic football has been BACK for more than a week now - as a fan of a side that has a 100% loss record so far this season I know this all too well.

But this page is all about the Premier League and the English top flight kicks off in style tonight as Pep Guardiola takes his Manchester City champions to Burnley.

And this is Burnley 2.0, a Clarets side that played some fine football on the way to winning the Championship at a canter last season.

It's also Guardiola versus former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, and it promises to be an exciting way to start the season.

It soon comes round, doesn't it?

One minute you are basking in the glory of a successful campaign/wallowing in the misery of relegation/sighing at the mundanity of yet another midtable finish, the next you are preparing to go through it all once again.

Yes, after a few short weeks of weekends free from the drama of club football, it is BACK, and what better way to kick off the new Premier League season than with the defending champions against a newly promoted side?
