    What a start!

It had to be Erling Haaland, didn't it? That might be his first touch of the game as Kevin de Bruyne plays a great ball in from the right following a short corner, Rodri heads it back to Haaland, who fires home clinically.

No doubt the first of many for Haaland this season.

Ederson plays a fine long ball out to the right for Kyle Walker, who controls well and the ball is worked to Bernardo Silva on the edge of the area but Burnley's defence close City down well and eal with the danger.

It's been a tremendous atmosphere in the build-up to the game, especially when the players entered the pitch, but it's a shame there was some boos ringing round when the two starting line-ups took the knee before kick-off.

I know that's still an amazing 11 and Grealish to come on is an incredible option, but is it just me or does City's bench not look as intimidating as last year?

It’s pretty safe to say that some of the big boys were looking at Vincent Kompany this summer with some high profile jobs up for grabs.

He views Burnley as a project and one that is not anywhere near finished. He did sign a new deal following promotion, which gets Burnley more security if clubs come knocking again.

However, I do not think he will be at Burnley forever.

If he has another season to remember, he is bound to attract more interest. I do not get the sense that he is in a big hurry to look elsewhere.

An intimidating atmosphere will be important if Burnley are to cause a first-day upset.

When flicking through the history of the last 10 years of Premier League opening fixtures, it comes as no surprise which side has the best record.

Manchester City have won nine of their 10 previous first fixtures, a sequence rudely interrupted by nemesis Son Heung-min at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2021.

Beyond that defeat, City have been invincible and it would be no surprise to see them steamroller their opening opponents this season.

An influential performer in many of those victories however was former skipper Vincent Kompany and he will be sitting in the opposite dugout at Turf Moor on Friday night.

Could the Belgian be the ultimate partypooper to spoil the Treble winners' glorious return to Premier League action?

    I wouldn't count on it.

It is difficult to see beyond Manchester City winning a sixth title in seven seasons as they follow up their Treble-winning feats that saw the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League come to Etihad Stadium.

The big match influence of Ilkay Gundogan may have gone, along with the match-winning verve of Riyad Mahrez, but a squad of frightening strength remains with the addition of Mateo Kovacic, who will add experience and quality in midfield, and young defender Josko Gvardiol, who sound judges tip for future greatness.

Throw in the phenomenon that is Erling Haaland and the enduring genius of Kevin de Bruyne, allied to so many others, and it is same again for me this season.

  20. Burnley facing best challenge - Kompanypublished at 19:27 British Summer Time 11 August 2023

Burnley face the "best challenge" they could ask for when they come up against Treble winners Manchester City, says manager Vincent Kompany.

The Belgian led Burnley to a 101 points tally to finish as champions and he said: "We play against such a good opponent and team filled with players and people I know.

"It is probably the best challenge you could have or ask for. I want the team to embrace this game. Hopefully the fans can do the same."

Kompany spent 11 seasons at City, captaining the side and winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and four League Cups.

"It has been an awkward month with congratulations flying back and forth between a lot of the people I know," said Kompany.

"They won the league, then FA Cup, then Champions League. They are people I have worked and lived with many years of my life. The contact will always be there.

"Now we have to put everything behind us and go toe to toe. We will try to do the best we can."
