For the benefit of Tim [19:15 BST), television coverage of tonight's game has indeed confirmed The Royal Dyche pub is still called The Royal Dyche.

I think that's all I'd ever ask for if I became a Premier League manager, a pub named after me.

What Burnley look like on their Premier League return is also going to be interesting.

They were famed for a style that maybe wasn't pretty but was effective when they were last in the top flight, but they went in a new direction after dropping into the Championship last term and it paid off handsomly.

Under Vincent Kompany they swept countless sides away with an exciting brand of football and their summer recruitment so far suggests they'll continue that style back in the Premier League.

Kompany will make history tonight by becoming the first Belgian to manage in the Premier League. He will also be aiming to become the first Burnley boss to win their first match in the competition with the Clarets.

Away from these two teams tonight there's some huge transfers looking set to happen elsewhere in the Premier League.

Tottenham and England legend Harry Kane is on the verge of a move to Bayern Munich, while Liverpool have agreed a British record transfer fee of £111m with Brighton for midfielder Moises Caicedo.

Burnley v Man City (20:00 BST)

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to Sky Sports: "We climbed the highest mountain [with the Treble].

"We're at the bottom. There's a lot of stones and difficulties. It [trebles] happens rarely in the history of football.

"We cannot forget who we are. The opponents want to beat us. We have to defend our crown in the best way possible being who we are.

"If another team beat us it's part of football, congratulations. But we'll try to do it being ourselves.

"Winning four Carabao Cups in a row was because we were so humble in every game."

I think Pep Guardiola will go down as the most influential manager of all time.

You think of the great Ajax sides under Cruyff, and then the great AC Milan under Arrigo Sacchi, Pep's Barcelona team too.

He has just completed another Treble with a second team in Manchester City.

Almost every young coach in the game will see him as their absolute idol, someone they want to emulate themselves with their own teams.

He has changed football not only in this country, but across the world.

The most impressive thing I would say is that, you look at their transfer window so far and think, maybe they need a couple more players?

But with Pep Guardiola, he almost creates new signings from within his squad; he adapts players to play in different positions and roles, having centre backs and full backs coming into midfield for example.

It is just bizarre what he can do with his football mind, he's amazing.

Glorious evening at Turf Moor as Burnley return to the Premier League and welcome Treble winners Manchester City as they try to follow up winning the title, the FA Cup and Premier League last season.

Great atmosphere of anticipation in and around Turf Moor for the opening night of the top flight campaign and the adjacent cricket club was also busy with supporters earlier - although no cricket tonight in what look like perfect batting conditions.

Burnley v Man City (20:00 BST)

    Burnley

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany to Sky Sports: "We have a team with very little Premier League experience. Maybe at the end of the season we'll have a lot more. We have to give people a chance for that to build up.

“It [team flexibility] is massive. We’re only as good as the options we have that we can solve problems with. Cohesion is a big thing. They have seven years of it.

"We’ll take it one step at a time. I hope they can get something out of this game, not just a result but get a bit of momentum – a tackle in, a dribble, a shot and help build a special night.

"With this being Turf Moor, first day of the season, I expect City to be at full force.

"I guarantee this is the worst Burnley will be this season [as a new team]."

If history is anything to go by, Burnley's survival this season looks assured.

In terms of points, the Clarets are the sixth best team ever promoted to the Premier League after breaking the 100-point barrier in their Championship campaign. Every previous 'centurion' side survived in the top flight the following season.

There has been lots of talk that the three sides coming up will go straight back down from the Premier League this season, but if one club can defy those predictions, then I am going for Burnley.

They were easily the Championship's standout side last season, winning the title at a canter playing superb football in manager Vincent Kompany's first season at Turf Moor.

Burnley have shown ambition and imagination with the £19m capture of Manchester City keeper James Trafford, the hero of England's Under-21 Euros triumph, and their attempts to steal midfield man Sander Berge away from another of the promoted sides, Sheffield United.

Kompany has revitalised Burnley and there is genuine excitement before Friday's opener at home to champions City.

Manchester City looked a bit undercooked in the Community Shield on Sunday. But they often start the season quite slowly, and we all know how they usually finish it.

This is still the champions we are talking about, though, and they have got so much quality in their squad.

I love what Clarets boss Vincent Kompany is doing and I loved the way they played in the Championship last year, but I think they will find it a lot more difficult if they try that brand of football in the top-flight.

    Prediction: 0-2

Sulaimon: Here we go again for another breathtaking season with some many twists and turns. I can't wait and my bet is on KDB to score the first goal of this season. Also what a way to start, two champions from last season and master against apprentice.

Nick: My top four: Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool Bottom three: Everton (dreadful last season), Nottingham Forest (swerved it , somehow, but not this time) Fulham (will return to standard yo-yo form). Luton will be the surprise package

I think that Burnley will comfortably stay up this season, around a 12th to 14th finish.

Haaland rises above the Everton defence to score for City.Image source, Reuters

Haaland absolutely smashed his first season in the Premier League and his challenge now is to repeat his incredible numbers.

He hit 52 goals in 54 goals in all competitions in 2022-23 and, playing for City, he will have the chances to score as many, or even more.

I have no doubt he will bang them in again, it is just a question of how many he will get.

Haaland only turned 23 a few weeks ago and at that age, as a striker, you are still learning and developing parts of your game - I certainly was.

You can see he loves scoring goals - it's what he lives for - so it is a scary thought for defences that he is going to get even better, especially playing under a manager like Guardiola.

  20. 'Outgoings could see City struggle a bit this year'published at 18:37 British Summer Time 11 August 2023

Burnley v Man City (20:00 BST)

    Peter Schmeichel
Former Manchester United goalkeeper on the Football Daily podcast

I think Man City have stayed the same, or maybe even gone backwards since last season.

Yes Haaland scored a tonne of goals but you take Gundogan out of that team, the way he performed in the final three months of last season, I think this year is going to be more of a struggle for City.

Also without Mahrez, and the rumours about Bernardo Silva and wanting to leave ... Without those three players it is not the same.
