  1. 'I prefer to win but I accept the point'published at 17:32 British Summer Time 8 October 2023

    FT: Wolves 1-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "When it was 11 v 11, I think the result was more or less fair. We were getting some chances in their box eventually, not very clear chances but enough to take advantage. After the red card, in the last 10-15 minutes, we tried to push to get the win. We did it. After that, if we had won it would be fair. Bit across 90 minutes, I think we played competitive and more or less took control of the game with possession but not very clear. We didn't really get in the attacking third to be more aggressive. I prefer to win but I accept the one point.

"I was thinking we could control the game and play better than we did [in the first half]. I was demanding players give more, to occupy the spaces and understanding how we could play to progress and control the game. We weren't doing like we prepared before.

"We have some hard circumstances with injuries. We are competing very well. We are, at home, being very, very strong. We are getting every point we are playing. But you have to be consistent to do it again. Today was a key moment to be in the top four. This draw is not bad but we were trying to win. We have to accept it and with 16 points I think this is good. We try to be demanding to get better."

  2. '2-2 is the right result'published at 17:32 British Summer Time 8 October 2023

    FT: Brighton 2-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports: "I think it is the right result to be honest. of course aft giving the 1-0 away, with all the quality Brighton have, they didn't do a lot. We served the goal on a plate pretty much. Second half we should have scored maybe the third one, with two big chances. But then we lost too many one-v-ones. When you give these set-pieces away it becomes very open. We conceded the goal and now it is 2-2. The first goal is [a mistake] Like all of our layers, Mac Allister found his way back into the game. The set-piece is a really good set-piece to be honest. We missed it with two players and that's why with set-pieces you should avoid them in the first place. That's it. Nothing else.

"The pressure they made in that situation. We have had games when we played really well against man -marking. We had moments when we won the first one. If we were better today, we would have really hurt them. But we didn't. That's how I feel - a little bit OK.

Should Brighton have had a man sent off? I don't know. I have no idea. When the foul is in the box, then it is a yellow card I think. Don't talk to me about rules. I take what I get. I trust an expert maybe should have said. I don't know."

Signs of improvement at the Amex? Yeah we should not compare the Brighton games. We are generally in a good moment and it is a disappointment. We have big expectations for ourselves but now the boys leave and I had a little bit of a talk in the dressing room that we leave with the right information that when we come back we can prepare for the next super important period. Things are ok but what's important is that the boys come back healthy and the injured boys come back and then we fight for everything. In decisive moments we have to be clearer. These two areas we were only 80 per cent and not 100 per cent, they cost us the result."

  3. 'We were the better team'published at 17:30 British Summer Time 8 October 2023

    FT: Brighton 2-2 Liverpool

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton captain Lewis Dunk speaking to Match of the Day: "I think other than the poor five minutes, we were the better team. I think the first 40 minutes we were comfortable. I gave away a silly mistake and then we did another one. I think half-time came at a good moment for us to regroup.

On the mistakes: "That's the moment we are in at a team. We are just having those moments when if things aren't going right we are getting punish. International break comes and then boys can go away and boys can work on the training pitch."

On recent comebacks: "I think it shows what we have in the squad. We have great depth and great character. We know we have got that in the team and we are never going to stop until the final whistle."

On his goal: "Shank it in the corner, that's what you do! It's always nice to score and the goal got us a point so it was massive."

  4. 'Thrilled with a point against one of Europe's best teams'published at 17:30 British Summer Time 8 October 2023

    FT: West Ham 2-2 Newcastle

    West Ham United

West Ham United manager David Moyes speaking to BBC Sport: "Thrilled with a point, up against a really good team who are probably as good as most teams in Europe at the moment. Great point for us.

"I don't think it is a free-kick [for Newcastle's first goal]. I'm really disappointed with a few decisions today. The two goals we concede are terrible, so they are bigger faults. We are not here to talk about the referees but their player [Bruno Guimaraes] is very lucky not see a second yellow.

"We nearly won it in the end. Newcastle played well and we didn't give them too many opportunities. We had a few ourselves. For us I'm pleased that we got a point here."

On whether goal scorer Mohammed Kudus will start more games: "He will be in the team for years to come so we are not in a huge hurry. The team is getting good results, but he can play a big role in the future."

  5. 'It feels like two points dropped'published at 17:29 British Summer Time 8 October 2023

    FT: Brighton 2-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister speaking to Match of the Day: "It felt very nice. I am talking about the atmosphere and the welcome from the fans. It was a very good match against a very good side. We almost win the game and then we couldn't defend the set-piece. Overall it is a good game and we feel like we dropped two points. It's a draw and then we move on.

"We make mistakes. We are football players and this kind of thing happens. The most important thing is how you react. I think the team reacted well. We came back and scored two goals. But as I say, we conceded the set-piece and it is just a point.

"[In] the second half we had so many good moments. They couldn't get the ball and that was good for us. They are a strong team. They play football and counter-attack as well. As I said, it is a point and we move on."

A fair result? "I don't know if it was fair. Today I feel like we dropped two points but we will see in the future They are a top team and some top clubs have dropped points here."

  6. 'Not losing to Liverpool is a great result'published at 17:28 British Summer Time 8 October 2023

    FT: Brighton 2-2 Liverpool

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi speaking to Match of the Day: "When you don't lose with Liverpool it is still a great result. We are happy with the point but if you analyse all the game how we played, maybe we deserve to win. If you analyse the second half when we were losing 2-1 to find the goal in set-pieces, you can have another opinion.

"We are very young. We made mistake but it is my responsibility. We played with two 2004, 2002 [birthdays]. It was a young first XI but it is our policy and I am proud of these players.

"I think there was a moment in the first half where we could score another goal to go 2-0 up and then the end of the first half I am not able to understand how we concede two goals. Sometimes you can put more attention in the defensive phase but you concede a stupid goal. Sometimes you work less in the defensive phase and you keep clean sheet, clean sheet, clean sheet."

On recent matches: "We played Newcastle, Man United, Europa League, Villa, Liverpool. It was a tough period. We have to adapt. We have to play every week, three games and we can't play with the same first XI.

"It was a very important day for Carlos Baleba, for Adingra . We need them. We need Pervis [Estupinian] and Lamptey and Adam Lallana because they are with some problems and [we want] them back after the break in the best condition."

Baleba was impressive, wasn't he? Yes, but the recruitment of Brighton is top and we have a lot of people who work inside and they are very good to find the talent and the potential players for the future."

Alan: Such an opportunity for Arsenal to win this game but not sure they are ruthless enough to take that chance. City have a toothless attack and they are not pressing Arsenal at all. Poor game.

Anon: Raya set the mood for that half, and everyone else has played down to his level - in both teams. Awful match so far with very little quality on show.

Andy: As a Luton fan I've seen nothing to worry me in that first half.

At the moment the biggest winners are Tottenham because they will head into the international break top of the table if this ends in a draw.

Anon: Same thing happened in the West Ham game. Bruno Guimarães got a yellow, then committed the same foul (if not worse) again, and no booking. Ref letting him off because of how early in the game it was. It's ridiculous.

Anon: It's not even just about Kovacic being sent off, it's about City having 11 men. They can sub Kovacic now and still be at full strength, they should be down a man in any case. Ref has no bottle

    HT: Arsenal 0-0 Man City

    Peter Schmeichel

It is very difficult to break through both of these defences. They are defending very well and in tight blocks.

So when you do get in behind the defence, don't do something that is clearly avoidable and give it away.

Higgy: It's why VAR should go. Why on earth should it not be allowed to intervene on that second challenge and say , Michael that's a second booking son!". It's game changing not sending Kovacic off and VAR should be for that.

Tom: City fan here, Kova very lucky not to get a red with that first one but how on earth was that second one not a yellow? People complain about VAR but that's 100% a terrible on-field decision. Laughable (also sub him Pep!)

Anon: Kovacic commits the same exact foul twice. One is a yellow card, the other isn’t. Make it make sense.

Garreth: How on earth is Kovacic still on the pitch? The referee has absolutely bottled it. First one a debatable red, second foul a definite yellow and should be off.

Prince: How is this not a second yellow..

Things have really livened up here. Arsenal fans are still in a rage after Mateo Kovacic escaped a second yellow card and there is no doubt the Croatian was very lucky to get away with it.

Still no goals but the temperature is rising considerably.

Paul: As a torn neutral. That's a very very close red card. Lucky player for city there.

Anon: Never a red. Clearly goes for the ball. I don't get it, one second VAR makes everything look 10 times worse, now it doesn't? Yes a foul but deffo not a red.

James: Looked like a clear yellow for Kovacic. It's physically impossible to tackle without the studs up and his foot wasn't high off the ground
