  1. 'Bellingham has licence to get forward'published at 18:06 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    Matt Upson
Former Arsenal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's slightly mis-timed by Bellingham, he doesn't get the power he wants.

But it shows the licence he has to make those late runs into the box to try and get himself on the scoresheet.

Half a chance for England at the start of the second half as Jude Bellingham meets a nice ball into the box by Jordan Henderson, but his cushioned header is no danger for Heorhii Bushchan.

Mykhailo Mudryk then threatens to charge away on a quick counter for Ukraine, but Harry Maguire is across well to get the challenge in.

Someone tell England's midfield it's not rugby, so a forward pass is ok.

I find it quite astonishing the amount of negativity towards Gareth Southgate, possibly the most successful England manager in decades. Does it not occur to people that maybe he does not actually need to win this game and that giving players a run out and trying different combinations might be more important?

Just watching the replay of the England goal and Jordan Henderson made a really good run down the middle just before Harry Kane made that pass to pull the full-back away from Kyle Walker.

  11. 'What a pass'published at 17:55 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    HT: Ukraine 1-1 England

    Matt Upson
Former Arsenal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's normally Bukayo Saka in the high position but this time it was Kyle Walker and what a pass from Harry Kane.

It just shows you that you can have all the possession and short interchanges but you can't beat an inch-perfect ball like that.

I found myself getting annoyed at seeing Harry Kane popping up in midfield but he knew what he was doing.

A bit of a shame that it needed Kane to take the initiative and remove himself from the centre-forward position, but a big chance for England to kick on now.

  13. 'England lured into trap'published at 17:52 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    HT: Ukraine 1-1 England

An interesting game between two teams with contrasting styles.

England have dominated possession but Ukraine have looked great on the counter and I think we'll see more of that in the second half.

It felt like England were lured into a trap for the opening goal. They were so comfortable in possession but the moment it turned over, there was space to be exploited.

  14. Brilliance from Kanepublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

A classic "what's Harry Kane doing back there?" moment. Dropped back to almost on the halfway line then produced that gem of a pass for Kyle Walker. The complete player.

One minute added on at the end of the first half. England are pushing for a second and Bukayo Saka plays a brilliant ball to the far post for Harry Kane, who nods it back across goal but there's no-one there to poke in.

  17. YELLOW CARDpublished at 44 mins

Roman Yaremchuk picked up a booking a couple of minutes ago for a foul and that's two Ukraine players on yellow cards so far.

Wow, Harry Kane. What a pass, but how are you even that deep? Madness.

    Ken

Kane having to take control again. Drops back and says 'ill do it myself'. Plays the perfect pass. What a player.

  20. 'Important goal'published at 17:43 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    Ukraine 1-1 England

    Matt Upson
Former Arsenal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

That's an important goal from Kyle Walker. It looked onside to me but you can never fully know until the lines are drawn.

You certainly want Harry Kane in those deep positions when he delivers balls like that. It was curled to perfection for the run of Walker.

The hardest bit for Walker was just prodding it home. He was through on goal but he had time to think about it.
