  1. 'Bayern perfect for Kane'published at 16:29 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Manchester City defender on BBC Radio 5 live

We have seen Harry Kane be a very good player for many years. Now he is at a club where they expect to win. All the eyes and talk will be around him. Maybe he is not even Bayern’s best player.

At 30, you understand the game more clearly than ever before. I think it will be huge for England, this is the generation where there is expectation that these lads should win, so being at Bayern Munich where there is such expectation is perfect for him.

Harry Kane has been a Bayern Munich player now for a few weeks and appears to be settling in well.

On the pitch he's scored three goals in three Bundesliga games while off it he has been getting acquainted with some of the local customs, slapping on some lederhosen and drinking some German beer ahead of Oktoberfest.

He hasn't yet had chance to learn any of the lingo.

He said yesterday: "It hasn't really come along any further to be honest!

"I am due to start lessons when I get back because the teacher was away for a little while."

An amazing reception for the Ukraine team as they come out to warm up. The stadium isn't even half full yet and the supporters are making a huge amount of noise. It will be a great atmosphere by kick off.

John Bathgate: Why Southgate is hanging his career on Maguire & Henderson is beyond me? Or has he had enough?

Steve in Milan: Henderson and Maguire? Why not throw in Philips as well. With Southgate its all too predictable. Give Tomori and Foden starts.

Wayne Ellis: How dare Gareth pick players who haven’t let him down before! Needs getting rid of ASAP

  5. 'Sterling will be very disappointed'published at 16:17 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

I am gobsmacked Raheem Sterling isn't in the squad. I look at it and think does an international manager go with players he trusts or go with players that are in form. Raheem Sterling fits both those categories.

He has picked players who aren’t in form and I’m not sure what he is basing that on. You have to trust him but if you are Raheem Sterling, you are very disappointed.

One person who can probably feel a bit miffed he wasn't included in this England squad is Raheem Sterling.

The forward was overlooked despite making a strong start to the season for Chelsea, making four appearances and scoring twice.

People can argue all they want with this comment, but it's a joke that Henderson and maguire are starting this match. Even if they play well, it's still a joke.

    Jason

In Saka, Rashford and Kane England have such an exciting front 3 yet Southgate never seems to want to start Saka and Rashford together. Maddison playing out of position just to accommodate Henderson is a shambles. And that's before we get into the controversy of his move to Saudi.

There is talk of 40,000 Ukraine fans being inside The Tarczyński Arena for this game here in Wroclaw and they are already making themselves heard - helped by the pitch announcer doing a bit of cheer leading.

Interesting England team news as manager Gareth Southgate keeps faith with Manchester United outcast Harry Maguire and there is a start for Jordan Henderson, despite the fact he now plies his tried with Al Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League after leaving Liverpool.

Every other person you see on the streets of pretty Wrocław seems to be Ukrainian.

Many live here - around 200,000 - but others have taken arduous journeys from Kyiv, like 17-year-old Maksym Stepanenko and his father Andriy. It’s taken them more than 24 hours by bus to travel to this match, with long waits at the border more than 1,000km away, but they felt they had to be here to support the team because football gives them "positive emotions".

They gave thanks to England as one of their "most important friends" but said they hope to see a victory for Ukraine "both today and in the war".

England's Gareth Southgate defends Jordan Henderson call-up

Former Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has faced some criticism this week for defending his move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

There have been reports he could face protests , externalfrom some LGBTQ+ supporters in Wroclaw, but Gareth Southgate insisted that has had no impact on who he picks to face Ukraine.

"I don't pick the team based on external reaction," he said.

"I think Jordan expressed himself this week that he'd be sad if that's how they felt. His feeling towards that community hasn't changed.

"I understand some of the comments that have been, and I respect the comments that have been made.

"But I think what's also been said is that they're going to get behind the team when we play, and I am sure they'll get behind Jordan when the game starts as well."

Ukraine and Arsenal full-back Oleksandr Zinchenko is hoping to see a stadium of blue and yellow when he and his team-mates come out onto the pitch this afternoon.

Because of the ongoing conflict with Russia, there are believed to be around 300,000 displaced Ukrainians living in the Wroclaw region.

"I know some friends living here since the invasion and the feedback is that Polish people are helping as much as they can," Zinchenko said.

"I'm expecting a full stadium of blue and yellow because I know a lot of Ukrainians are living here, of course it will be an amazing atmosphere and I'm expecting a good game as well, both teams play good football.

"It is impossible to say that it is going to be the same atmosphere as when we play in Ukraine, because when you play in Ukraine even the air is different. I can't wait until this time we will be (back playing in Ukraine) because all of us are just dreaming about it."

England boss Gareth Southgate is expecting his side to come up against a passionate pro-Ukraine atmosphere at Poland's Tarczynski Arena.

Ukraine have not been able to play at home since Russia launched an invasion of the country in February 2022.

They are expected to be backed by 40,000 fans in Wroclaw for today's game.

"We know there are thousands of Ukrainians here," Southgate said.

"We are expecting a passionate crowd but we are here to win a football game, so for us it is about keeping our emotions in check and focusing on our job."

After four wins from four, they sit top of their group and know that another victory will all but secure their place at the tournament in Germany.

Three points against Ukraine today and Harry Kane better start getting ready to act as tourist guide for the rest of the lads next summer.
