    Ukraine 0-0 England

Jude Bellingham is right in the thick of things at the moment. He pops up on the left now and just glides past Yukhym Konoplya, getting a cross in but it is headed away.

He's got five of Real Madrid's eight goals so far and they absolutely love him there. He's had an instant impact.

    Ukraine 0-0 England

First sight of Jude Bellingham in flight. He surges forward, weaving through one of the few gaps in the Ukraine defence and then flicks a ball forward for Bukayo Saka, who just can't quite keep it in play.

    Ukraine 0-0 England

All England possession at the moment but they are needing to be patient with Ukraine holding their defensive shape well.

The words of the Ukrainian national anthem fill the air, blue and yellow flags held aloft in the stands. It is stirring stuff and there's no doubt about who the majority of support is for here.

Jude Bellingham is never dull to watch,he has a great engine and has such a great influence on the game.

What a start he's had at Real Madrid.

You look at him and Declan Rice, two young players with so many years to give to this England squad, and it's so exciting.

  7. 'Similar to reverse'published at 16:56 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

This [England] team is very similar to the one that played against Ukraine at Wembley in March - the only change is Marc Guehi playing instead of John Stones and they won that match quite comfortably.

Just minutes to kick-offer here in Wroclaw and while The Tarczyński Arena is nowhere near full there is a huge Ukrainian contingent inside the stadium with the noise being whipped by the on-pitch announcer.

This game may not be in home territory for Ukraine but it will certainly be a home game environment.

Out come the two teams and what an atmosphere. Lots of blue and yellow in the stands as expected.

  10. 'Henderson's experience and leadership really important'published at 16:54 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

England boss Gareth Southgate, speaking to Channel 4 about selecting James Maddison: "He gives us a slightly different profile of player and allows us to get an extra body into midfield. He has started this season exceptionally well and he has been outstanding in training."

On his role today: "He will drift. He's clearly a player that wants to be inside so you don't want to restrict him too much in terms of his movement."

On what he saw of Jordan Henderson in training to make him select him: "His normal level. He has looked no different to how he always does with us. He started seven or eight of our World Cup games and qualifiers. His experience and leadership in a tough away venue is really important to us."

On his reaction to criticism of his move to Saudi Arabia Pro League: "I've spoken to him about it. Yesterday I was answering a lot of questions on his behalf. He understands everything but he is totally focused on wanting to help England do well."

  11. 'Big future for Colwill'published at 16:51 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

Former Arsenal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Levi Colwill has a great calmness and he gets around the pitch so well.

He was really good at Brighton and has impressed at Chelsea.

I think he could have a big future with this England side.

Lewis Dunk is another that has been in outstanding form, his passing range is excellent.

Glad that I can finally bring my longstanding praise of Levi Colwill into an England page.

The Chelsea defender is on the bench today but it won't be long, I don't think, before he should be considered a starter. An England captain in the making.

  13. 'Youngsters need to grab the jersey'published at 16:48 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    Ukraine v England (17:00 BST)

It's a sensible pairing [Harry Maguire and Marc Guehi], given the fact there is no John Stones.

It makes sense that he has experience in Maguire and it seems that Guehi is probably next in line.

These younger players or less experienced players need to grab the jersey.

Ukraine have only lost one of their last 13 European Championship qualifiers (W9 D3), although that one defeat did come away at England in March.

  15. Wroclaw not pitch perfectpublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    Ukraine v England (17:00 BST)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer in Wroclaw

This Tarczyński Arena was the venue for the recent world heavyweight title bout between Ukraine's Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois - and it has certainly left its mark on the playing surface here in Wroclaw.

It is a clear a fair bit of work has needed to be done to get it ready for this Euro 2024 qualifier between Ukraine and England.

The pitch looks decided patchwork in places.

Such a strong reaction to the line-up from Jason (see 16:11) and co. In reality, the alternative to Maguire is the inexperienced Colwill or the unproven Tomori/Dunk. Alternative to hendo’s maybe Gallagher who’s had an average start in a poor chelsea team. And you can’t say Southgate’s not picked on form - Maddison and Guehi are proof of that. How about try trusting our most successful manager in 60 years?

    Tom, Newbury

Maguire and Henderson? Why not go the whole hog give Lineker, Scholes and Beckham recall.

Hopefully we will hear from Gareth Southgate before kick off as his team selection has certainly sparked plenty of debate.

James Maddison is in and rightly so after two goals and two assists in four games for Tottenham this season.

In contrast, Harry Maguire has played just 23 minutes of football this season...

This is England's first game in Poland since they drew 1-1 with the hosts at Warsaw's National Stadium in 2021.

Harry Kane bagged a beauty of a goal that day.

I'm looking at the England bench and I am scratching my head over the noise around Maguire. Who exactly is it everyone thinks should be on the field in place of him?!

    Chris

I don't understand what Phil Foden has to do to get a regular place in the first team for club or country. He has been a star performer for city and yet isn't guaranteed a start, which appears to be impacting his opportunities to start for England. I get the hype about Jude Bellingham, but I think Foden has earned the right to start considering he has more experience and has proven consistent.
