Changes are needed in the Chelsea forward line not the back line. Why must Maren Mjelde be benched every time goals are conceded?

So much space for Arsenal's forwards to get into. Beth Mead finds Alessia Russo but Ann-Katrin Berger comes right out of her goal and gathers.

I'm not sure what Chelsea are playing at here, defensively.

    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea

Fran Kirby takes a bit of a tumble and she thinks she's got grounds for a penalty.

The referee shakes her head, nothing in that. It's all gone a bit scrappy.

Those changes have made a difference for Chelsea. They have slowed things down and have made it less open for Arsenal.

But the game itself has become a bit stale too. There's been a few feisty challenges and more fouls are creeping in.

    Oooooh.

Caitlin Foord also finds herself in the referee's book for a poor challenge on Johanna Rytting Kaneryd.

Arsenal just need to calm down a bit here. They do have a two-goal cushion so some of this not really necessary.

  6. Bristol City still bottompublished at 13:47 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2023

Liverpool v Bristol City (14:00 GMT)

Bristol City haven't been able to get going since achieving promotion back to the top flight after winning last season's Women's Championship.

They have managed just four points from eight games so far.

Lauren Smith's side's only win came in a 3-2 triumph over West Ham at the beginning of November, while they also held Everton to a late 2-2 draw.

They play Chelsea after today's game in their final match before the winter break, so their trip to Prenton Park this afternoon is their best chance of getting more points on the board before the end of the year.

  7. YELLOW CARDpublished at 55 mins

    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea

Katie McCabe is into the book after shoving Niamh Charles in the back but I think she's actually shown yellow for giving the referee a bit of lip.

Beth Mead is the latest to hit the turf. It's a bit of a slip and slide out there at the moment.

    • Leicester have scored 12 WSL goals this season, from an expected goals tally of 8.2. Their difference of 3.8 goals more than their xG is the joint-highest in the competition this term (level with Chelsea).
    • Leicester have won more WSL games (3) and kept more clean sheets (3) against Brighton than they have against any other opponent in the competition.

Katie McCabe gets a bit of abuse from the away supporters as she kicks the ball away and smiles cheekily at the crowd.

Again Arsenal players half-hearted and if you are one of the centre-backs you have to steam out.

You cannot afford to give Lauren James the time and space like that.

Steph Catley is down and in need of a bit of treatment. She'll have to go off temporarily but looks like she's fine to return to the action.

We're still dissecting those changes and it looks like Chelsea have now moved to a back three with Johanna Rytting-Kaneryd and Niamh Charles as wing-backs.

That has unleashed Lauren James in the middle alongside Sam Kerr and she's just given us a glimpse of what she can do from that position...

It will be interesting to see how these substitutions get involved in this game straight away.

I think the reason for the Ashley Lawrence change is that she will offer you a bit more going forward.

Bit of a slower tempo to this second half.

Lauren James has a go from range but it's just wide. Decent effort.

  16. Can Liverpool follow up Brighton thrasing?published at 13:40 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2023

Liverpool v Bristol City (14:00 GMT)

Liverpool finished November with a comfortable 4-0 win at home to Brighton.

Matt Beard's side started the Women's Super League strongly and were alongside Leicester in the early leaders but that form soon ended.

They were beaten heavily by Chelsea before that game but had positive results against West Ham, Leicester and Tottenham before that.

Bottom-placed Bristol City should be an opportunity for them to build on their recent better form today, before they play Manchester United in their final game before the winter break.

No messing around from Emma Hayes. She's made her changes immediately.

I'm not surprised to see some switches at the back but I am a little surprised to see Lauren James still out there.

She struggled in the first half to deal with Arsenal's width and was barely involved. But she's obviously a matchwinner so it's easy to see why she's stayed on.

Will those changes help? Emma Hayes clearly not happy with that defensive line.

  19. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 13:37 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2023

Emma Hayes has seen enough and Chelsea make a triple change at the break.

Sjoeke Nusken, Maren Mjelde and Eve Perisset make way for Fran Kirby, Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence.

Leicester will be without forward Hannah Cain for the remainder of the season after she became the latest player across the women's game to suffer an ACL injury.

Cain suffered the injury during training before Wales 2-1 home defeat to Iceland in the recent international break.

It is the second time in her career that the striker has suffered this type of injury, having previously torn her ACL in 2022 that ruled her out for a year.

Before the injury Cain had made a promising start to the season, having appeared in all eight league matches for the Foxes so far, recording two assists.
