Re: Everton's points deduction. I hope they do go down as the way they have reacted to breaking the rules has been poor. No acknowledging their reckless spending.

  2. Toffees 'sick' of waiting - Stubbspublished at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Everton v Crystal Palace (20:00 GMT)

Everton fans are "sick" of their appeal over a 10-point deduction being "dragged on".

That's the view of club legend Alan Stubbs as fans, players and anyone associated with the club await an outcome, which is expected soon.

Speaking on a special episode of The Football News Show all about the Toffees, Stubbs said: "There was a lot of bewilderment from a lot of people within football and outside when the initial penalty of 10 points was given.

"From Everton fans there was a lot of anger and animosity. Realistically we as Everton fans are sick of it. We're sick of how long it's getting dragged on. It's a prolonged process.

"We were told it was going to be the middle of February, and then Wednesday or today, but there is still no news."

Having endured two injury-hit seasons, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has stayed fit so far this year but struggled in front of goal, failing to score in his last 18 games in all competitions.

There has been something of a malaise around Crystal Palace recently, but they were actually very spirited in their defeat against Chelsea on Monday.

The Eagles have missed their big guns, though. Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze have not played enough for them this season.

I looked into it for the Monday Night Club and Olise has made only eight Premier League starts in 2023-24. Eze has 13, but together they have only made four. They are the go-to guys for them in an attacking sense and they haven't been available.

Everton will see this as an incredible opportunity to end their long wait for three points and I bet Sean Dyche has them fired up.

They need a win anyway, but it will be especially important if the teams around them pick up points earlier in the weekend.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-0

Can't think why Young is preferred to Harrison. Looks like handing the initiative to Palace. Unless Dyche is going for wing backs? How Everton line up could be interesting.

Palace's record at Goodison won't fill their fans with much confidence ahead of tonight's game...

    • This will be the fourth meeting between the sides this season - Everton won the reverse fixture 3-2 and also beat Palace in an FA Cup third-round replay.
    • Crystal Palace are winless in their past eight visits to Goodison Park (D3, L5).
    • The Toffees are looking to complete their first league double over the Eagles since 2004-05.

Everton v Crystal Palace (20:00 GMT)

A quick look at the table shows why this is such an important game for both sides.

A draw would be enough to get Everton out of the bottom three but a win would help them drag a few others sides back into the mix.

Defeat would leave Crystal Palace just two points ahead of tonight's opponents and only four clear of the drop zone.

However, things would look much better for the Eagles with a win. That would put eight-points between them and the relegation spots.

Right then, for all the chat around the change of manager at Selhurst Park, there is a rather big game to be played at Goodison Park tonight.

Everton and Crystal Palace are both in real need of the points...

I bumped into Roy Hodgson recently and he's a lovely bloke. It wasn't an ideal situation with him going into hospital because it seemed like the wheels were already in motion with regards replacing hm, but it looks like they have split amicably so credit to Crystal Palace.

I don't know much about Oliver Glasner to be honest, but it could be all change at Palace.

I always felt that Roy Hodgson would be allowed to go out with his head held high. He's had an incredible managerial career.

I played under him at Blackburn. He was a superb organiser and a brilliant coach. He was the first manager that I ever did double sessions with, which I thought was deeply unfair, and also real patterns of play. He went into every detail.

He's had one hell of an appetite for the game. I don't think he said it was end in his statment. Football is a drug and he obviously loves management. Maybe he'll be another Neil Warnock and end up somewhere else. In some respects I hope he puts his feet up and relaxes.

It isn't sour at the end but I think he deserved more from the Crystal Palace fans this season in my opinion.

Slight diversion here, I’m sure Vieira brought in our best four players - Eze, Andersen, Guehi and Olise. If Glasner can keep Palace up and sign four similar signings then everyone will surely be happy. Farewell Roy, Palace legend.

    On Roy Hodgson's health...

The club were keen to get that message out that they have been laying up a succession plan.

They said 'Roy's health was their main concern' and that is why there hasn't been any updates until now - they only gave an update saying 'he was stable'.

But, apart from that there has not been any detail on his condition, until now.

New Palace boss Oliver Glasner has spoken briefly about his appointment.

"I am very happy to join Crystal Palace," he said.

"I am looking forward to working with the talented squad, meeting the club's supporters and experiencing the Selhurst Park atmosphere I have heard so much about.

"It has been a pleasure to meet with Steve [Parish, chairman] and Dougie [Freedman, sporting director], and I am looking forward to working with them to achieve our goals."

  15. Glasner's style could suit Palacepublished at 19:29 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

    Alex Howell
    BBC Sport

Oliver Glasner is someone Crystal Palace have looked at before - the co-owner John Textor, who also owns Lyon, has been in talks with Glasner previously about taking over in France, but it wasn't the right time.

Palace feel his style of football, which is an aggressive pressing with high-energy, will suit their players.

The only thing with having a new manager coming in is they have a lot of injuries, so whether Glasner can implement his style is the main risk.

Don't know much about Oliver Glasner, you say, Chris? Fear not, we've got you covered with the basics...

The 49-year-old Austrian has previously managed Austrian sides SV Ried and LASK, as well as Wolfsburg in Germany.

His most recent role was as head coach at Eintracht Frankfurt, whom he led to victory in the 2021-22 Europa League.

After beating Barcelona and West Ham, the German side beat Rangers on penalties in the final in Seville.

Glasner took Frankfurt to the last 16 of the Champions League the following season before leaving the club last summer.

  17. 'A big risk at this stage of season'published at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Everton v Crystal Palace (20:00 GMT)

    Chris Sutton
Former Blackburn striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Will the Crystal Palace fans kick up a stink if Oliver Glasner is pragmatic? Roy Hodgson was pragmatic and look what has happened there.

It's really difficult to come in at this stage of the season and Glasner has to be balanced in his approach. It isn't going to as easy as flicking a switch and expecting everybody to be right at it if they are going to play this high-intensity pressing game. It will take time. There has to be a patience.

At the start of the season, I didn't feel sorry for Hodgson, but they were sort of forced into giving him the job again because he did so well. They were always going to get the same brand of football and in the end the fans have had their voice heard.

They've made the change, but it is a big risk bringing someone in at this stage of the season. They are low on confidence and there will be a little bit of doubt in there. It will have to be a slowly, slowly approach.

I don't particularly know much about Glasner but he can't go in and think it will change overnight and they will become an unbelievable attacking team.

I am happy that Roy Hodgson has stepped down, but he should have stepped down at the end of last season. It's way forward for Crystal Palace. All I wish Roy Hodgson now is good health.

In that situation, how do you look like you've done the right thing? Crystal Palace have made the decision for sporting reasons, they knew who they wanted to bring him, but then Hodgson has been taken ill. I'm not quite sure there is an obvious playbook for that.

You have to do the right thing for the club and the honourable thing. It has been a difficult week for Palace to navigate.

Crystal Palace assistant manager Paddy McCarthy on Roy Hodgson: "Lifelong Crystal Palace fan, wore his heart on his sleeve, came to work with enthusiasm every day and obviously disappointed that he couldn't see out the season but his enthusiasm and knowledge was infectious and we're all privileged to have worked with him.

On giving Roy a send off: "Absolutely, I think everyone will share that sentiment. He's a fantastic football man and we're just delighted that he's on the mend, that he's in good health and hopefully we can give him a good send off."

On Oliver Glasner's appointment: "I haven't met the new manager, he has great pedigree in Europe, European cup winner. My priority has been preparing the team for tonight's performance."
