  1. 'A season too far - time for Roy to hang up tracksuit'published at 19:16 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Everton v Crystal Palace (20:00 GMT)

    BBC Sport chief football writer

Roy Hodgson's nomadic 48-year career in management took him around the world but has surely ended at the place he called home - Crystal Palace.

The drug of football that has been Hodgson's lifelong addiction may well have been sampled for the last time with his departure from Selhurst Park amid fan disaffection and a drop towards the Premier League's danger zone.

After he stepped down as manager with the club in 16th and, having been taken ill last week , surely it is time for English management's elder statesman to finally hang up his tracksuit.

What is Ward doing at centre half when Tomkins is on the bench? He is not a centre back. Too slow and Everton will target him quite rightly.

Former Tottenham and England goalkeeper on the Football Daily podcast

The pressure on managers is far more than it ever was.

You don't go into a training ground at 9am and leave at 1pm, those days are long gone - this is a 24/7 job.

You are running a football club and we're in a huge results business, you lose two or three games and all of a sudden a managers job is under pressure.

Let's not forget what Roy Hodgson has done in football, look at his CV there is a man who deserves a huge amount of respect and in the last few weeks he has not had that.

I was told Oliver Glasner, the ex-Eintracht Frankfurt manager, was close to being appointed and this was the same day Roy Hodgson fell ill.

This has led to him leaving now, the form has been poor for a long period of time at Crystal Palace and they have three wins out of 19 games in all competitions.

Palace have a big game this evening in the Premier League against Everton, who are in the relegation zone.

As Hodgson has stepped down his assistant Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington will take the side tonight, but it will remain to be seen if they will stay at the club.

  5. 'Roy is unique'published at 19:07 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports: "Roy is unique in a number of ways. Most importantly there are not many English managers respected across the world, and across European football like him.

"Also he was not just managing at 76, which is phenomenal, he is coaching at that age. I know from my experience at Liverpool and last season at Palace he was still on the training pitch day in and day out.

"The fact Roy is OK is most important for the whole football family."

Crystal Palace captain Joel Ward speaking to Sky Sports: "Obviously our thoughts go out to the gaffer [Roy Hodgson], he has been integral to this club for a number of years.

"When there is a lot of noise around the club, it can pull people's eyes and ears elsewhere so now we have got that clarity, hopefully we can hit the ground running.

"He's part of this club's history and in the Premier League. The group of players he's worked with, we want to wish him all the best and good health."

A big boost for Everton to have Abdoulaye Doucoure back.

The midfielder is their top-scorer with six goals this season and they've not won a league game without him in the team in 2023-24.

Everton v Crystal Palace (20:00 GMT)

So, Roy Hodgson's time as Crystal Palace manager is over after taking charge of 200 games across two spells at the club.

There is not a huge amount in it when comparing his stint from 2017 to 2021 with the current one but after ending last season so well, it has been a struggle for Palace for much of this campaign...

  11. 'Roy has special place in Palace history'published at 18:53 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Everton v Crystal Palace (20:00 GMT)

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has paid tribute to Roy Hodgson, after the 76-year-old stepped down as manager.

The club also confirmed Hodgson is out of hospital and "doing well".

"Roy has a special place in Crystal Palace history and this will never be forgotten," said Parish.

"After four years in which he led the club to maintaining Premier League status season after season, he once again joined us nearly a year ago to steady the ship, and worked wonders.

"Quite simply, we owe our continued Premier League status to Roy.

"I would like to thank Roy enormously for his service and wish him the very best for the future; it's fair to say Roy has the keys to Selhurst Park and will always be welcomed back."

Who was going to replace Roy Hodgson? We didn't have to wait too long to find out.

Former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner was widely expected to be the new man and Crystal Palace confirmed his appointment a little over an hour ago.

Glasner has signed a contract until June 2026 and will be in charge for Saturday's home game against Burnley.

He was pictured watching Tottenham's defeat by Wolves on Saturday, with Spurs hosting Palace on 2 March.

Hodgson's coaches Ray Lewington and Paddy McCarthy will be in charge of Monday's game at Everton.

It is unknown if Glasner, who is yet to appoint a coaching team, will be at Goodison Park.

There's only one place to start after the news this afternoon...

Roy Hodgson has stepped down as Crystal Palace boss so the club can "bring forward their plans to appoint a new manager".

Hodgson, 76, was "taken ill" during training on Thursday amid reports he was to be sacked.

The Eagles have lost 10 of their past 16 Premier League games and are 16th in the table, five points above the relegation zone.

"This club is very special and means so much to me," said Hodgson.

Hodgson's assistants Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington will be charge of the team for tonight's match.
