  1. Kubica to come in at Williams?published at 20:34 British Summer Time 10 June 2018

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

Kubica is itching to get in there and show what he can do for Williams. He is looking at Sirotkin and Stroll and will be thinking 'if I can do better than them then I am doing well'. Kubica would love to get back in it. He was great in his first chance in F1, he won this race in 2008, he has some great talent, but is really up against it.

Williams could actually use his experience, but it is difficult when the two drivers are bringing in such financial backing.

Into the final 10 laps. Sebastian Vettel now leads by eight seconds from Valtteri Bottas. There's half-a-cahnce that Lewis Hamilton, in fifth, might ctach Daniel Ricciardo, but otherwise the top six look set in stone. Unless something extraordinary happens, of course.

  3. 'Not been great'published at 20:30 British Summer Time 10 June 2018

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

It has been disappointing, not a lot of excitement at the front. We have seen a few overtaking moves, but it has not been great at the front. We have had other races this season where we have had a safety car late on.

Yes, let's hope that's just a precaution with Brendon Hartley. He was able to walk away from the car, but there's no point taking a risk if there's any doubt.

Lance Stroll and Brendon Hartley had a big crash on the first lap, both were sent to the medical centre and Brendon Hartley has now been sent to the hospital for a scan so fingers crossed he is OK.

Huge gap, by the way, between Kimi Raikkonen in sixth and Nico Hulkenberg in seventh - it's 50-plus seconds. You know in the Premier League, where the top six teams race away from everyone else, and Burnley, Leicester and Everton fight it out for seventh? It's like that.

And yes, Burnley had a brilliant season, before you all tweet in to complain.

But now Bottas locks up at Turn One, losing around 1.8 seconds. Vettel's lead is back up to 5.4secs. It's the German's race to lose.

Harrison Fretwell-Bates: Raikkonen is not performing how Ferrari wanted him to be, and every time he fails to impress, he gets one step closer to leaving the team.

Nita Lewsey: This is #CanadaGP, external should be plenty of overtaking but nobody can run in the dirty air. F1, external you need to wake up and stop these boring races. Free tyre choice but with decent tyres please.

  11. 'A miserable, miserable weekend for McLaren'published at 20:23 British Summer Time 10 June 2018

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

He had a good race, he started 14th, and he was 10th. If Fernando Alonso was in the grandstand he would be a lot miserable.

McLaren finally got rid of the Honda engine, which they had been complaining about for three years, but this is a miserable, miserable weekend for McLaren.

Fernando Alonso is one of the best drivers of all time, that has come out of his mouth, and I agree with him. I grew up watching him win two world championships, he has nearly won world titles in cars which should not have been able to.

McLaren at this track was more or less the slowest car apart from the Williams, but they had two inexperienced drivers. So McLaren has the slowest car, maybe the best driver and it is pitiful. Two retirements in a row.

He will go to Le Mans next week and you feel he will enjoy that a lot more. This can't be fun for him.

This McLaren-Renault dream partnership is not what anyone expected. They blame Honda but that is in the back of Red Bull's 'B' team and they are beating McLaren, which is humiliating for McLaren. The Honda engine has taken so much flak, but Toro Rosso have done a good job. Pierre Gasly finished fourth in Bahrain, which was a fantastic result.

  13. What has happened so far?published at 20:22 British Summer Time 10 June 2018

    • There was a big crash in the opening lap between Brendon Hartley and Lance Stroll, with both out of the race.
    • Sebastian Vettel is 5.2 seconds ahead of Valtteri Bottas, with all the leaders stopping once.
    • Fernando Alonso, aiming to take the record for most Formula 1 races finished, has to retire on lap 43 with a mechanical issue.
    • Red Bull are third and fourth with Verstappen third and Ricciardo fourth. Lewis Hamilton is fifth after losing a place to Ricciardo during a pit stop.
    • Raikkonen, Hulkenberg, Sainz, Ocon and Leclerc make up the rest of the top 10

Left groundhog: "Not sure I can even be bothered to watch to the end of this."

Middle groundhog: "It hasn't been a classic, has it? Not like that time Jenson Button drove through the field and the whole race lasted about three days."

Right groundhog: "Good episode of Morse, this. It's got a young Rachel Weisz in it."

Romain Grosjean now does come into the pits, and has to go over the dirt to avoid Esteban Ocon. "Did you see what Ocon did to me?" says Grosjean on the team radio, complaining that he was blocked off. It's all a bit road rage at the roundabout, really.

    Lap 48/70

I should say that there is one driver who has yet to make a pit stop - Romain Grosjean. He appears to be hoping for a safety car, so that he can take advantage to move up the placings. The field is so spread out, though, that it doesn't look likely.

AADZ: Kimi just not the ruthless race winner Ferrai need, it's time for a change and it's a season too late.

Martin Norden‏: F1 is now as boring as hell, only Qualifying is exciting, suggest all aerodynamic aids are removed only a basic front and rear wing permitted, start getting drivers to drive the cars not pilot a computer designed car that only works in clean air.

The general consensus is that the only thing that could liven up this race is a safety car. Or perhaps a giant singing groundhog. Either, really. We'd take either.
