  2. Day to emulate Miller?published at 02:04 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Another intriguing day at Oakmont comes to a close and what a final day we have lined up.

None of the top seven on the leaderboard have won a major. Who will keep their nerve on Sunday?

Or will the winner come from further back? World number one Jason Day is just six adrift - Johnny Miller famously hit a course record 63 at Oakmont to come from that far back to win the US Open in 1973.

I'm heading off but will be back Sunday lunchtime to bring you the end of round three before we all settle in for a traditional Father's Day finale.

    Thanks for reading.

  3. I need to curb my aggression - Jason Daypublished at 01:58 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

World number one currently six shots behind leader Shane Lowry

“I was trying to be as patient as possible and luckily I got off to a good start. Jordan Spieth was three under early on and that pushed me and got me going. I had a couple of bogeys but I was very pleased with a 66.

"Hopefully I can break history and win the US Open, but I’ve got to give myself the opportunity. Currently sitting six back I’m in with a chance as you never know how it’s going to go on a course like this.

"It’s very difficult to be aggressive out here but I think my game plan is pretty solid. I’m an aggressive player by nature so I need to curb that. At least I can have a lie in and rest tomorrow whilst others have to get up and finish their rounds.”

  4. Lowry retains leadpublished at 01:56 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Shane Lowry lines up his putt, comes up and over a ridge and he'll be in for par to retain a two-shot lead on five under.

Sergio Garcia's delicate birdie attempt misses left but he's in for par and will stay two under overnight.

Andrew Landry has missed his birdie putt, but is in for par. One birdie and one bogey in a solid 13 holes. He is three under.

Playing partner Dustin Johnson gets up and down from the bunker for par and he is three off the lead on two under.

  5. Hooter signals end of playpublished at 01:52 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

The hooter to signal the end of play has sounded but the players can finish the hole they are on because there is no storm threat.

Lee Westwood has already hit his tee shot to the par-three 16th. He is pin-high but 30 feet to the left.

Sergio Garcia skips a dozen feet past the 14th flag with his second. Playing partner Shane Lowry pulls up 20 feet short.

  6. Eagle for Knoxpublished at 01:48 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Scotland's Russell Knox has not had a lot to shout about today but in the gloaming he drives the par-four 17th and nails a 15-foot eagle putt to get back to three over.

I reckon he may sprint to the 18th tee to try and finish his round, to avoid having to get up at stupid o'clock in the morning

  7. One more hole?published at 01:47 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Shane Lowry, Sergio Garcia and Gregory Bourdy take the decision to play on.The Irishman and the Spaniard find the fairway.

Another two-putt par for Lee Westwood on the 15th. He heads to the long par-three 16th.

Back on the 13th, Andrew Landry is fractionally short and left and drifts back to Westwood territory. He removes his shades to check exactly where his ball has landed.

Dustin Johnson drifts right off the tee and is in the sand.

  8. Landry & Johnson miss outpublished at 01:43 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Andrew Landry's birdie putt on 12 stays up but it's another decent effort that leaves him with a tap-in par to stay three under.

Dustin Johnson. No messing. Goes straight and firm but the ball doesn't fancy the hole.

  9. Leaderboard updatepublished at 01:40 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

  10. Darkness loomingpublished at 01:40 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Up on the 15th and Lee Westwwod from 191 yards fires into the middle of the green. Darkness is looming. Not much play left today.

Sergio Garcia stares to the sky after leaving his birdie putt short.

Shane Lowry with a three-footer to stay at five under...makes it. Will they play on?

  11. Johnson & Landry sniffing birdiespublished at 01:38 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Dustin Johnson lays up with his second shot on the par-five 12th. He leaves himself 93 yards and then hits 10 feet past the hole.

Andrew Landry, from 95 yards, pitches pin-high with his third shot and he's got a birdie sniff from double the distance.

Sergio Garcia hits his tee shot into the par-three 13th into the same area as Lee Westwood did a little earlier. The Spaniard doesn't get as much action on the ball as Westy did though and his stays within 15 feet.

  12. Westwood Ho!published at 01:34 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Birdie chance for Lee Westwood on 14. It's bending in from the right and that was never in doubt. One of those that looked in from the moment it left his putter.

The Englishman back up to two under.

Australia's Jason Day leaves another birdie chance on the green but signs for a four-under 66. The world number one on one over for the tournament.

  13. Daylight for Lowrypublished at 01:32 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Before Shane Lowry taps in, Sergio Garcia gets up and down from the back of the green for par.

Lowry has a good look at this. It's no more than two feet. And he rolls it straight into the middle of the cup. Three under for the round, five under for the Championship. And more importantly, two clear of the field.

  14. Lowry going two clear?published at 01:29 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Shane Lowry is going to five under par. The Irishman has flicked a wedge from 94 yards stone dead on the par-five 12th. That was his third shot.

Back up on the tee and Andrew Landry has found the fairway with his drive. Here's Dustin Johnson, 324-yard ball carry but he catches an uphill section of the fairway which kills his ball.

  15. Spieth's charge fails to materialisepublished at 01:24 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Andrew Landry from 15 feet to tie the lead on four under...

...aims way out right, but not far enough.

Dustin Johnson has hit up to three feet and rolls in for par to stay two under.

Sergio Garcia hitting his third into the 674-yard par-five 12th from 235 yards. It's a long iron and the Spaniard implores his ball to sit. It's not listening though and merrily scoots through the green and into the rough.

Jordan Spieth, who knocked in three successive birdies early in his round, finishes with a par to card a level-par 70 and stay four over. Is he too far back?

  16. Grace goes lowpublished at 01:19 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

South Africa's Branden Grace has finished with a birdie on the 18th to card a four-under 66 to move into red figures on one under. A quiet but significant move.

  17. Johnson & Landry have birdie shoutspublished at 01:17 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Dustin Johnson into the heart of the 11th but his ball is meandering back down the green, further away from the hole with each revolution.

Andrew Landry fires over the pin and his ball tries to work its way back towards the hole but stops 15 feet away.

Johnson is left with a slow 50-footer; Landry's is a lightning quick affair. I know which putt I'd prefer.

  18. Westwood out of luckpublished at 01:13 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

The 12th holes is a monster 674 yards today. Sergio Garcia's ball flies 301 yards and ends up in the sand.

Up on 13 and Lee Westwood's tee shot is all over the flag but the ball spins back from six feet short to about 36 feet from the pin. Harsh.

Here's his birdie putt. We know it's going up a hill so he can afford to thump it and thump it he does. Two feet past. It's the kind of slippery one we've all seen him miss countless times before.

  20. Lowry leaves birdie putt highpublished at 01:09 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Shane Lowry from 12 feet but that's not dropping in. Still, it's a par and he's leading the US Open by one shot. Life's not all bad.

A two-putt par for Garcia on 11 to stay at two under.

Up on the par-five 12th, Lee Westwood has a putt with more break than it is in length and the ball doesn't want to drop. Westy gives it as long as he can before blowing* it in the hole.

Jason Day almost scrambles a par on the seventh after short-siding himself with his approach shot to the green but his putt slides just past the hole. He's back to one over par.

    *He used his putter.
