Bryson Dechambeau - the US Amateur champion.

What a name. What a choice of headwear.

He has just opened up with a bogey on the first to slip to two over though.

There are so many fantastic stories that could spring from this. We have a box office leader in Dustin Johnson and a Grade A chaser in Sergio Garcia.

This is shaping up to be a terrific final two days.

    Spieth to two over

Jordan Spieth with a putt of 15 to 20 feet for birdie on the 12th.

Oh my. Calculations as considered as Pythagoras. The ball drops south with its last ounce of momentum.

He is building up some ominous momentum.

“Jordan’s only three over par and he’s already made a birdie on his third round. He’s just inching is way forward a little bit.

“Everyone believes that even par, one par could be a winning score.”

  6. Day on four overpublished at 21:12 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Jason Day on the tee on the monster par-five 12th.

He tees it high, grips, rips and lets it fly out to somewhere in the region of 340 yards.

There is a chance of getting on the baize in two shots from there. Just.

“[Rory McIlroy missing the cut is] a huge surprise. The conditions are soft this week and he generally excels in soft conditions at majors. It didn’t look like he was swinging poorly. He was going on a good run today but four putts on one green put a dampener on things.”

  8. Two of four out of the way - Lowrypublished at 21:09 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Ireland's Shane Lowry is definitely in with a shout. A round of level par today followed his two under from yesterday:

“I'm pleased with today. I hit greens, two putted and made some birdies.

I’m playing nicely and I have two of four out of the way, so I just need to keep it going.

I’m sure the greens are going to be pretty quick this afternoon."

  9. Fitzpatrick to five overpublished at 21:09 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Oakmont is looking delicious today by the way.

As green and crisp as a Granny Smith.

Matthew Fitzpatrick, the 21-year-old from Sheffield, is not finding the course to his liking however.

He has slipped to five over after two bogies on his opening three holes.

  10. Dufner to three overpublished at 21:03 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

American Jason Dufner picks up an early stroke with a birdie on 11.

The 2013 PGA champion has not been in too good touch so far this year.

  12. Spieth to three overpublished at 21:00 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Jordan Spieth drains a birdie putt on the par-four 11th.

The American world number two raises a hand of appreciation to the gallery's cheers.

    A stand-up guy, proper son-in-law material.

  13. Watson at five overpublished at 20:59 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

    Rightio.

    Cheers Peter.

Bubba Watson's cannon of a drive was a decent start to the round.

He will need a bit better than decent today though. He starts the second half of his title bid at five over.

I'm heading off for a bit of a break. Mike Henson is dropping in to take you through the next hour, as Bubba Watson hits a huge drive down the 10th...

  15. Day off to perfect startpublished at 20:53 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Andrew 'Beef' Johnston has another makeable birdie putt on the 12th but again he cannot hole it. This has to be encouraging for everyone else though.

Jordan Spieth all over the flag at 11 with his second. Back on the 10th and the world number one is beaming. Jason Day starts his ball several feet left of the hole and sets off walking after it with his putter raised. Birdie. The perfect start. He's four over.

Big numbers being posted by Kevin Kisner. The American started round three on four over par. But a double bogey on the second and a triple on the third has plummeted him to +9.

  17. Day & Wood eyeing birdiespublished at 20:43 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

From the 10th fairway, the BMW PGA champion Chris Wood finds the back left of the green. Jason Day's ball trundled into the first cut of rough. It's all downhill and laid out in front of him. The line is perfect, the distance 10 yards short and he's left himself a slippery slidey putt across a big slope.

  19. Spieth in for parpublished at 20:38 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

England's Chris Wood is playing with world number one Jason Day in round three. They are playing the 10th as their first hole and both nicely away.

Up ahead, Spieth has smashed out of the rough onto the green and two putts for par. He is eight shots off the lead remember. A four-under-par 66 would do him nicely today I would suspect. It's going to require patience though.

  20. On the rangepublished at 20:32 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Lee Westwood is down on the range, preparing for his 21:28 tee-time. He's not just hitting balls though. He has a sports psychologist watching his every move, offering words of encouragement.

Masters champion Danny Willett is also fine-tuning his game. He is out at 21:06.

Andrew Johnston into the guts of the 11th green. Another birdie look coming up. From 15 feet and he leaves it on the high side to stay four over.
