  1. Westwood birdiepublished at 22:09 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Jason Day finds the middle of the green on 15. He's got a long birdie chance but the way he's been rattling them in.

On two, Westwood out with a wedge from the first cut and that is curling, curling, curling and it's in! Birdie time for Lee and he is up to two under.

  2. Leaders out on the coursepublished at 22:08 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

And here go the leaders. Scott Piercy at two under is first off and he hangs his driver out left, indicating his ball is heading for the rubbish.

First-round leader Andrew Landry is up next. The nerves getting him as well. He's not as far left as Piercy, but he's also in the rough.

Leader Dustin Johnson the last to tee it up. A couple of practice swishes, a quick look down the fairway and bang. It starts down the left, fades to the right, gets a friendly kick and stays on the fairway.

  4. Furyk bogeypublished at 22:05 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Jim Furyk, despite finding the fairway with his tee shot, misses the green with his second and that costs him a shot. Lee Westwood safely on the second in two. He too is in white trousers, blue shirt and white cap. His blue shirt is a bit too deep to be considered smurf-esque though.

Back up the first and Sergio Garcia fires straight at the pin. It pitches on the front edge and sticks.

  5. 'Lowry has a game that travels'published at 22:02 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

“Shane Lowry has a game that travels. He has great swing and a great feel. And he can win any time he tees it up.  He can play well on any type of golf course, any type of weather – he has a great game from top to bottom.”

  6. Leaders heading outpublished at 22:02 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Our leader Dustin Johnson marks his ball and fist bumps dozens of spectators as he heads to the first tee. He looks a bit like a smurf in his white trousers, blue shirt and white cap.

  8. Bourdy, Garcia and Lowry tee offpublished at 21:58 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent at Oakmont Country Club

“What a great expression of European strength this trio is. There’s the something of a  journeyman in Gregory Bourdy, Sergio Garcia, who is a superstar of European golf, and Shane Lowry who has given every indication he’s going to be a superstar too.”

  9. Amateur eagle, Day improvingpublished at 21:57 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

The only amateur to make the cut, Jon Rahm of Spain, with a terrific eagle on the par-five 12th, chipping in from 135 yards to go to three over.

His compatriot Sergio Garcia is in an all-European trio just headin gout on the first. Ireland's Shane Lowry fires down the right of the fairway. Frenchman Gregory Bourdy tugs into the deep rough and Garcia is safely down the left.

No fun for Westwood, who was closer than I thought on the first green. He misses the birdie putt to stay one under.

Jason Day's day is getting better though. A fourth birdie in his opening five holes and he is up to one over.

    Jay Townsend
Former American professional golfer on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"Adam Scott is a guy that doesn’t have a good US Open record and no one is sure why. He has a perfect game for the US Open except he’s struggled for putting. But he seems to have to his short putter going and thing seem to be looking up for his putting.”

  11. Spieth drops, Scott birdiespublished at 21:49 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Maybe I wrote too soon? Over on 14 and Jordan Spieth is dropping his first shot of the third round. He left himself too much to do after finding sand off the tee and then hitting into rough. No scrambling par this time put a tap-in bogey and he's back to +2.

Australia's Adam Scott in for birdie on the first and he is immediately in the red at one under.

  12. USGA going soft?published at 21:46 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Hello. Three birdies for Spieth? Three birdies for Day? And here's Lee Westwood with a pin-seeker on the first. He's got a dozen feet for birdie.

Has the USGA set up a birdie-fest?

Back on the tee, 2003 US Open champion Jim Furyk gets a tremendous reception. Out with a three-wood but he catches the first cut.

So Rob thinks Sergio will be the winner, or can Westwood or Dustin Johnson take their first major? Or maybe we're forgetting about someone - Current Champ and world number two Jordan Spieth has just slotted home his third birdie in a row. He's only five shots behind now.

  15. Westwood off and runningpublished at 21:37 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Worksop's finest Lee Westwood pumps his tee shot safe and sure off the first tee.

He gives a fairway camera a cheeky grin as he strides in pursuit.

    He is one under overall.

    Day to three over

And the world number one is sniffing a bit of movement in the field and some low scoring in the offing.

    Spieth to one over

    Sound the klaxon.

Jordan Spieth is officially on a charge. He rattles in a putt off the back of the hole on 13 for a third successive birdie.

One over and within five of the leader Dustin Johnson.

  18. Postpublished at 21:27 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Goodness. This is a heavyweight threesome getting off the first.

Adam Scott, Zach Johnson and Marc Leishman - all level par - are underway in round three.

  19. Spieth on the chargepublished at 21:26 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent at Oakmont Country Club

“The big boys are making a move and Spieth is surveying a putt on the 13th which would give him a third birdie in three holes.”

  20. Spieth birdie chance on 13published at 21:26 British Summer Time 18 June 2016

Jordan Spieth's club heads are getting molten he is so hot.

He pings an eight iron straight at the flag of the tee of the par-three 13th and it locks on like Top Gun.

One hop, a zip of backspin, and that comes to rest 10 feet from the hole.

    A cast-iron birdie chance.
