  1. McDowell in troublepublished at 19:22 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    McDowell +5 (4)

    Sorry Graeme.

I had just said you looked hot after back-to-back birdies and here you are, trudging around in a ditch looking for a ball you know is only going to serve you up a penalty stroke.

McDowell is taking a drop on five after going way right off the tee. I'll keep you posted on how bad the damage gets. He's about to let rip...

"Go, go," shouts McDowell. Yikes. I fear that's in a ditch too. Get the abacus out.

    Oosthuizen +4 (5)

Louis Oosthuizen, how's your luck? Bang in.

On the sixth hole Oosthuizen - who has two birdies and two bogeys already today - pumps one at the bunker on this par three. It hits the lip and bounces left onto the green. That was a foot from disaster and now he's got 15ft for birdie.

It looks like Louis has fallen short this week. His day so far shows us what can happen though? Just when you think you're in good touch, this course will bite you.

    Lowry -7 (20:30 BST)

Shane Lowry went out there to complete round three this morning and pressed it home, opening a gap which, historically at least, looks hard to overhaul.

And I'll say this for Lowry, he's got a good head on his shoulders and a lot of bottle.

At the Bridgestone Invitational last year - a big tournament in the calendar - he found the trees on the last hole and had a one-shot lead over Bubba Watson. Lowry produced a shot of wonder to find the green and put a birdie putt away too to win by two. It was a show of guts.

He can dig right in there if he needs to.

So, all the players who are level par or better have never won a major.

Westwood, Johnson and Garcia are very experienced, Lowry, Summerhays, Grace and Piercy have been knocking around for a few years and Andrew Landry, in golf terms, is barely out of nappies, or in his case, diapers.

Can one of these eight players win a major for the first time and if so, which one? Or can major winners Jason Day or Zach Johnson, just a measly eight shots off the lead, win another major?

    Furyk +2 (3), Koepka +5 (6), +3 (3)

"Koooch" they shout from the galleries as Matt Kuchar rolls one across the third green and he's pretty much conquered half of Pennsylvania right there, what a putt from a full 30ft for par.

Jim Furyk makes good work of a long, downhill effort on two. He barely has to touch the little object yet it rolls a full 20ft or more and stops short so he can convert. That was a right knee-knocker.

Brooks Koepka - such a talent - birdie, birdie, birdie, that's three in a row and back to five over. A confident stroke gets the job done on six. Never in doubt.

    Johnson -3 (20:20 BST)

Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia are all in the clubhouse and prepping for what they hope will be a first major win.

Westwood strolled in looking relaxed with his partner, DJ barely spent any time indoors and got straight out on the practice area.

I firmly believe Johnson will win a major soon and shed the 'nearly man' tag he's acquired. I wonder if he will benefit from not being in the lead group today. Perhaps that's a touch less pressure.

  8. What a shot!published at 19:01 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Hahn +10 (12)

He's 10 over but still smiling.

What a strike from James Hahn in the middle of the 14th fairway. It comes in from left to right, takes a bounce and then rattles the pin to nestle below ground.

That's eagle. The guys at the top of the leaderboard would pay a pretty penny for that kind of stuff today.

  10. Birdie for G-Macpublished at 18:57 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Spieth +5 (3), McDowell +4 (3)

Jordan Spieth leaves himself around eight feet for bogey on three and it's nasty. Downhill, he just sends it on its way and it meanders into the cup. That was the mark of a master putter. Graeme McDowell drains his birdie and that's back-to-back birdies for him. Lovely stuff G-Mac.

    Day +1 (19:50 BST)

Ron Sirak of Golf Digest is showing us his logic for Jason Day, who is currently one over par ahead of his 19:50 BST tee time.

The world number one got things going yesterday but has he left himself too much to do?

  12. Spieth troublespublished at 18:53 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Spieth +4 (2), McDowell +5 (2)

Graeme McDowell looks hot out there. His trousers are a kind of sunfire orange, with a black polo on top. He's slick in appearance and slick on the fairways suddenly. On the second drilled an iron to five feet from the pin to make birdie and on three he could do the same. A ripper of an iron clings on to a ridge on the green and it will be six feet or so left.

His playing partner Jordan Spieth puts the bucket and spade away in the bunker and then chips from the fairway to leave 25ft for par.

  14. What's to come?published at 18:49 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

So as Peter has been telling you for the last few hours, our leaders are out at 20:30 BST, with Lee Westwood and Dustin Johnson out at 20:20 BST.

What's to come will be drama. Who could forget Dustin melting down on 18 last year at Chambers Bay? It was around 2am if memory serves and the oohs and aahhs on the treacherous course could be heard this side of the Atlantic.

Early on in Sunday's play we are seeing some players score well, so Shane Lowry's four-shot lead is not perhaps insurmountable. Or is it?

  18. McDowell birdie, Spieth parspublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Jordan Spieth with a wedge from 124 yards on the second and that is an absolute belter, landing a couple of feet past...but hang on, it's got a bit of backspin and that is speeding back past the hole and ending up 20 yards off the green.

Graeme McDowell plays it better, firing 20 yards past the pin and the ball comes back to four feet for a birdie. Down the hill, a confident strike and half the damage repaired.

Spieth chips up to five feet and knocks in the par. He needs better.

  19. Knox struggling on the secondpublished at 18:35 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Jim Furyk is the latest off the first tee with his unique whippy swing. The 2003 US Open champion is from Pennsylvania so can expect big support today. His opener trundles into the first cut.

Up on the second and Russell Knox with his putter from 15 yards off the front of the green. The groans from the spectators let the Scotsman know he's not given that enough of a thump and the ball is rolling back to him.

No problems for Louis Oosthiuzen though. The South African nudges in from a few feet for a perfect birdie-birdie start.
