  1. Lee on the birdie trailpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

There are birdies to be had out there today. New Zealand's Danny Lee, who you may recall, was at the business end of the leaderboard after a one-under 69 in round one, has had three in his opening four holes.

Sadly for him, he is eight over par because he was 11 over par through  his middle two rounds.

  3. Willett starts with a parpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Masters champion Danny Willett is also up and running. It's not been the Englishman's week. A five-over-par 75 in round one put him on the back foot and he starts with a par on the first to stay eight over par.

  4. Birdie for Beefpublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Out on the course, England's Andrew 'Beef' Johnston has opened up with a birdie to climb to eight over par.

He has won a lot of friends this week with his easy, laid-back approach and he's also been mistaken for leader Shane Lowry by journalists, so the Irishman has told BBC Sport.

They are both bearded and big in the belly I suppose...

  5. Always the bridesmaid?published at 16:25 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

There are only eight players at par or better after the opening three rounds and none of them have won a major.

Several have come close. Dustin Johnson had a putt to win last year's US Open, Sergio Garcia missed an eight-footer to win the 2007 Open Championship and Lee Westwood has had nine top-three finishes, a record among those never to win one of golf's four big prizes.

Will one of that trio be the bride today?

  6. Leaders out at 20:30 BSTpublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

The final round is already under way. The players go out in reverse order of course, so Shane Lowry will not tee off until 20:30 BST. He is playing with the Leicester City of the tournament Andrew Landry.

Quite often we get a surprise first-round leader at a major but generally they fade away, unable to string good rounds together. However, the 28-year-old Texan has belied his world ranking of 624 to keep in touch.

He followed his first-round four-under-par 66 with a 71 and 70 to be three under.

  7. Lowry chasing historypublished at 16:05 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Victory for Shane Lowry would be a 10th major win for Irish golfers In the last 10 years.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy leading the way with four, while compatriots Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke have one apiece. Rory and G-Mac have both won the US Open.

Dubliner Padraig Harrington has three to his name but he never won the US Open so if Lowry is successful, he will be the first from the Republic to take the prize.

  8. Lowry leading by fourpublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Hello and welcome back to live text and radio (from 20:00 BST) coverage of the final round of the 116th US Open.

When I left at the close of play on Saturday, Ireland's Shane Lowry held a two-shot lead with four holes to play in his third round.

A couple of birdies in his closing holes, coupled with two testing par putts, has put the Irishman four clear of the field. Can he hold on? Let's find out...

  9. Tee timespublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

We'll leave it there for the third round and will be back with you from 16:00 BST.

The first pairs will be out for the final round at Oakmont at 15:00 BST, with leader Shane Lowry and Andrew Landry the last pairing due back on tee at 20:30 BST.

They will follow England's Lee Westwood and American Dustin Johnson.

    It's all to play for...

  10. Third round leaderboardpublished at 13:46 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Right, let's have a look at the leaderboard after round three - with Ireland's Shane Lowry sitting pretty on top.

    -7 Shane Lowry (Ire)

-3 Andrew Landry (US), Dustin Johnson (US)

-2 Lee Westwood (Eng), Daniel Summerhays (US)

    -1 Branden Grace (SA)

E Sergio Garcia (Spa), Scott Piercy (US)

  11. The wait...published at 13:38 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

You've just shot one of the best US Open rounds at Oakmont, you're leading the major field by four strokes, and now you face a lengthy wait before hitting the course again for the final round.

Penny for your thoughts, Shane Lowry?

The Irishman looked incredibly calm on Sunday morning, but will the nerves creep in for the 29-year-old as he waits to take to the tee in the final pairing alongside American Andrew Landry?

  12. Round three completepublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

So, it's a par for Dustin Johnson on the 18th that leaves him three under and four shots off the pace heading into the final round.

However he is joined by fellow American Andrew Landry in tied second after the 28-year-old pulled a shot back on the 18th to post 70 for the round.

Scott Piercy completes the morning's play, and - finally - we've completed round three.

I'm sure Lowry will excuse being called 'rotund' if he wins this, John...

John McEnerney: Nearest major winner 7 shots back. Come on Big Burly Bearded Shane Lowry! Oakmont built for rotund lads look at Angel C in 07!

Wayne Roberts: Can't help but want Westwood to win it.

Nicola Jade: Shane Lowry is on fire here! Keep this up in the afternoon and can't see anybody catching him.

  14. Big-hitting Johnsonpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

A massive drive from Dustin Johnson on the 18th puts him in the rough, but with 169 yards to the hole the American places his approach shot comfortably on the green.

Johnson's one over for the round and four shots off leader Shane Lowry - how he would love to close that gap a tad before heading back out this afternoon at Oakmont.

  15. 'Like a motorway'published at 13:14 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Lee Westwood says it will be like "playing down a motorway this afternoon" and insists patience will be required.

The 43-year-old former world number one is two under heading into the final round, and still in with a shout.

  16. Lowry's third-round 65published at 13:09 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Well, what a fantastic round for Shane Lowry.

The Irishman will be pleased with his morning's work as he records a five-under 65 on Saturday/Sunday - and he will head into the final day's play as the leader on seven under par.

  17. Tense at the toppublished at 13:05 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Sergio Garcia hits the 18th green from the fairway and Shane Lowry follows him on, albeit leaving himself with a slightly more difficult angle.

One hole back, Dustin Johnson's bunker shot is a touch heavy and fizzes across the green and off the other side.

It's tense, and that's how we like it...

  18. How low can you go?published at 12:58 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Jason Day shot a superb four under 66 on Saturday that fired the world number one into contention, but Shane Lowry continues to dig out birdies and a par at the 18th would see him post a third-round best five under par at Oakmont.

One to play for the County Offaly man in round three.

  19. Three is the magic numberpublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

How about that from Shane Lowry, though - three appears to be the magic number for the Irishman on Sunday.

He stretches his lead to four strokes again with another birdie, going from tee to hole in three shots for a third successive hole, to put himself seven under par heading into the 18th.

  20. Johnson's eyes on the prizepublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

Dustin Johnson looks like a man intent on improving on last year's US Open finish, and the only way to do that is by snatching first place.

The American comes close to sinking another lovely putt and looks to have taken some early form on the final day at Oakmont, albeit with a round to go - he remains three under.
