  1. Rory makes parpublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    McIlroy -1 (2)

So after a frustrating start for Rory, he makes the green in two and gives himself a 15-foot putt from behind the flag to birdie.

It's close from McIlroy, just kissing the cup, but doesn't drop and he adds a par to that opening bogey.

  2. Can Dustin Johnson reproduce his US Open form?published at 14:02 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    D Johnson -2 (14:10)

US Open champion Dustin Johnson starts his third round at 14:10 and will feel he still has a chance after three birdies on his last four holes yesterday left him on two under overall.

However, if he is to replicate his success at last month's US Open then he is going to need greater accuracy off the tee.

He has only found the fairways 43% of the time in his Troon action so far.

A few spots of rain as McIlroy waits to play into the second. Strangely, it looks like it's getting brighter out at sea. Nowt wrong with that from Rory, all over the flag after a booming drive...

  4. Westwood bogeyspublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Westwood +2 (14) Donald +4 (17)

Two bogeys in the last four holes for Lee Westwood has wiped out the Englishman's good work on the front nine.

He was up to evens and two under for the round, but is now back level through 14 on Saturday.

Compatriot Luke Donald, meanwhile, has just birdied the 17th to move back to four over.

  5. Troon pro gets a knockpublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

With 81 being an odd number, the first man out this morning Haydn Porteous needed a playing partner.

Step forward Kieron Stevenson, the 43-year-old head professional at Royal Troon.

Stevenson was given the nod at 22:00 BST on Friday, but then I guess he doesn't need too much practice on a course where he's played for the last nine years and aced the par-three eighth.

He said: "I played OK. I didn't keep score but it was great, good fun and an absolute pleasure to be out with Haydn. We had some good chats out there and he was really nice to play with."

  6. Eight under to win it?published at 13:53 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Jay Townsend
    Former European Tour player

Rory McIlroy is in with a chance. I think eight-under will be the winning score, with the weather forecast, the wind and the rain.

  7. McIlroy bogeyspublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    McIlroy -1 (1)

Rory McIlroy chops his way through the long grass and manages to avoid a bunker at the first. Not a bad lie for the 27-year-old.

He reaches for the putter and fires one down to the right of the flag. Looks like a straightforward putt from around five feet for Rory, but he watches that one fly by and will have to settle for a bogey.

  9. Day finds the hospitality areapublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Day -1 (12)

    We've all been there.

Jason Day, the world number one, hacks one out of the rough on the 12th, from one side of the hole and can only find the hospitality area on the other side of the course.

No time for prawn sandwiches for the Australian and he finally recovers to escape with a bogey at that hole.

He also has the knowledge that he has made every golfer everywhere feel that little bit better about their own games.

  10. McIlroy to regret first shot?published at 13:49 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    McIlroy -2

    Ben Dirs
    BBC Sport at Royal Troon

McIlroy saunters onto the first tee with a couple of minutes to spare. The marshall was beginning to look a bit anxious. Playing partner Kim goes with iron but Rory's not messing about, going with the big stick. Silence from the grandstand. I think he might regret that.

  11. Competing in the Olympics 'a big deal'published at 13:46 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Harrington E (6)

Three-time major winner Padraig Harrington says competing in the Rio Olympic Games for Ireland next month will be "a big deal" for him.

A number of leading players, including the current world top four, have opted not to compete at the Games, with several citing fears over the Zika virus as a reason for not taking part.

On Tuesday, Rory McIlroy said he would "probably watch the Olympics, but I'm not sure golf will be one of the events I'll watch".

However, Harrington told the BBC: "I've won three majors and winning a fourth major would be nice, but it doesn't really change anything. Winning an Olympic gold medal would be a significant contribution to my CV."

Harrington is currently level par in the third round of the Open, and has just birdied the sixth.

  12. McIlroy in the roughpublished at 13:43 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    McIlroy -2

Rory McIlroy is on the tee, an ocean view to his right, dressed all in black.

He starts way right looking to find a bit of wind, which disappears just as the Northern Irishman's drive soars towards the rough.

And that's where it lands, in the long stuff, and not a million miles away from those dog walkers on the beach who stopped to watch the world number four tee off.

  13. McIlroy 'still in with a chance'published at 13:37 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    McIlroy -2 (13:40)

Some more quotes from 2014 champion Rory McIlroy, who starts his third round shortly.

"The good thing is the guys at the top have not played in conditions like this so far this week, whereas the guys on our side of the draw have," he told Sky Sports.

"If you make a few birdies early, which looks like what's happening out there, and then hang on in the back nine, at 67,68 you're right back in it.

"I feel like my game has got better in these conditions, I showed that yesterday.

"It would have been easy to put the head down and shoot out of the tournament. To hold it together and to still be in with a chance is a great effort."

  14. Day into top 15published at 13:36 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Day -2 (11)

Jason Day has underhit a couple of putts today and does so again at the 11th. He makes par, but it could have been another birdie for the Australian.

He was firing them in on the front nine, making four birdies, despite leaving a couple short.

The 28-year-old is three under for the day, two under in total, and up into the top 15.

  15. Rain on its way?published at 13:33 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

It will rain in the next 20 to 30 minutes, according to Jay Townsend's weather app.

You can hear the former European tour player on Radio 5 live right now, live from Troon.

  16. Where are the fans?published at 13:30 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Ben Dirs
    BBC Sport at Royal Troon

Something else that needs to be mentioned are the sparse crowds at Troon. The grandstands around the 18th are almost empty, the paths are unobstructed and you don't need an inside the ropes press pass to get a good view of the action.

A couple of marshalls have commented on it and the chap signing posters in the cavernous official shop was bemoaning the lack of custom. As I write, I think that wind might be getting up...

  17. 'I feel like I've played very well'published at 13:29 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    McIlroy (-2) (13:40)

Rory McIlroy has not had the best of luck with the weather at the Open and is eight shots adrift of leader Phil Mickelson.

But McIlroy, the 2014 winner, is not complaining and feels he is still in contention.

"It's The Open Championship,'' McIlroy said. "Some draws go your way and some draws don't.

"The last Open I played, I got the good end of the draw and good things happened that week. Then this year, it's not so much.

"But I'm not going to let being on the wrong side ruin my mood or ruin my week. I feel like I've played very well and that gives me optimism going into the weekend.''

  18. Scott's sixpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Scott +2 (1)

    Ben Dirs
    BBC Sport at Royal Troon

Adam Scott was about 30 yards off the green after his drive at the first but walked away with a six. The wind seemed to play a part in that, the Aussie's wedge from the rough holding up in a gust before coming to rest in a green-side bunker.

Failure at Troon is wonderfully undramatic.

  19. Double bogey for Rosepublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Rose +2 (16)

A double bogey at the 18th yesterday aside, Justin Rose has played some of his better golf on the back nine at Royal Troon this week.

He was two under on the run to the clubhouse on Thursday and level par until a final mishap yesterday - posting 70 in total on a run of holes that has caused problems for plenty.

The Englishman was looking good on Saturday following the turn as well with a birdie at 13, but has just double bogeyed at 16. One step forward and all that...
