  1. Birdie time for Daypublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Day -2 Howell +1 (8)

Jason Day's strong start continues, he's made it to three under for the day. The world number one collected a third birdie on Saturday at the par-four seventh.

He's out with England's David Howell, who is one under for the round.

Only four golfers in Open history have suffered a worst disparity over successive rounds.

The biggest is 22 shots by Robin Davenport, at Muirfield in 1966. He improved from a first day 94 to a second round 72.

But also worthy of mention is the extraordinary rollercoaster ride experienced by Colin Montgomerie, also at Muirfield, in 2002.

After a first-day 74, he improved 10 strokes to a 64, only to then run up an 84 as he got caught in the worst of the weather on the Saturday - 20 shots difference! Even a final-day 75 was nine worse charts off, making his range of scoring for the week look like a range of very pointy mountains!

  4. Horschel's unwanted recordpublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Horschel +10 (missed cut)

    Gerald Scott
BBC Sport Online at Royal Troon

The full scale of Billy Horschel's second round meltdown had the Open stattos hurriedly leafing through the record books at Royal Troon last night.

In terms of the downward disparity between a first and second round, his fall from a 67 to an 85 was the worst in Open history. 18 strokes worse! From four under to 14 over. And a missed cut.

It surpassed the 17-stroke swing suffered by Rory McIlroy, who shot an 80 after leading the Open with a 63 at St Andrew's in 2010.

  5. Horschel might be feeling a bit betterpublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Horschel +10 (missed cut)

It has been a tough day for Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson and Danny Willett. And, watching on, somewhere from a hotel room, it might make American Billy Horschel feel a tiny bit better.

Imagine the joy of shooting a 67, and then imagine the despair of shooting an 85. That's what Horschel did on Thursday and Friday.

  6. 'More fun watching the Masters'published at 12:44 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Willett +7 (18)

One man who will not be enjoying his third-round card is England's Danny Willett, who is back in the clubhouse on seven-over.

The Masters champion carded a plus three 74 today and he will be due another early start tomorrow.

And what does his brother PJ think about things?

  7. 'The wind not yet a card wrecker'published at 12:43 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Ben Dirs
    BBC Sport at Royal Troon

It's windy in Troon, the kite surfers currently strutting their stuff on the Firth of Clyde will attest to that. That said, it's fairly consistent and certainly not card-wrecking stuff, as some decent early scores have demonstrated.

There's also no rain as yet, but one thing that is noticeable is the temperature, which has dipped a few degrees. Challenging seaside conditions, but not approaching unplayable.

  8. The toughest holepublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

"David v Goliath" was how Patrick Reed described the difference between the front and back nines at Troon.

A red round can soon fall apart after the turn. The 10th and 11th are statistically the hardest holes on the course. The 11th, the hardest, known as the Railway, has wrecked the card of many this week, including Bubba Watson.

Already today Jordan Spieth has left with a six, while Bubba Watson carded a triple bogey.

Players have no view of the fairway as they drive down the 482 yard hole. Go too left and it's straight onto the railway lines.

Arnold Palmer, winner in 1962, called it “the most dangerous hole I have ever seen” and in the same week Jack Nicklaus, on his Championship debut, ran up a quintuple bogey 10 (when the hole played as a par five).

  9. Railway wrong'unspublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

We mentioned that Bubba Watson was one of the many to fall foul of the railway tracks next to the 11th this weekend. This is what he faced. Come on Bubba, that's playable...

    Maybe not.

  10. Watch: Colin Montgomerie's great tee shot at the fifthpublished at 12:39 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

It's not all been bad for Colin Montgomerie. He rolled back the years with a great tee shot on his way to a birdie at the fifth.

    Westwood E (8)

After opening with a bogey, England's Lee Westwood has carded three birdies to get back to two under for the day and level par overall.

The last of those birdies came at the Postage Stamp, a hole he's gradually got the hang of this week. Bogey, par, birdie...surely not a hole in one tomorrow?

  12. Monty meltdownpublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Montgomerie +11 (15)

Scotland's Colin Montgomerie was one of those to benefit from the wind and rain that helped force the cut mark out to four over par on Friday.

However, the 2005 Open runner-up has mixed two double-bogeys and five single bogeys with a couple of birdies to be 11 over for the tournament.

Maybe Monty just wants to be out first for what could well be the 53-year-old's final Open round on Sunday - it will certainly be his last at his home course of Royal Troon.

The American shot a one-over 72 and it could have been so much better had it not been for a triple-bogey on the 11th after he hit the railway lines.

  14. Spieth's struggles continuepublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Spieth +5

The Golf Channel's Ryan Lavner has come up with this fascinating stat.

  15. MIxed morning for Spiethpublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Spieth +5 Snedeker +1 (18)

Jordan Spieth is back in the clubhouse, but probably wishes he hadn't bothered with that back nine today.

The two-time major winner enjoyed four birdies through eight, but then posted back-to-back bogeys, before hitting a double at the railway and dropping another shot at 15 to put him one over for the day.

Add that to that 75 he shot yesterday and the 22-year-old American is well out on five over for the week.

Spieth's playing partner and compatriot Brandt Snedeker enjoyed a more productive morning, carding three under.

  18. Day pulls up shortpublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Day -1 (6)

Jason Day has a chance to pull another shot back, but his putt pulls up just short on the sixth - did the world number one not get the R&A memo about those slower greens today?

He looks frustrated, and nearly misses as he nonchalantly swings a putter at the ball to prod it in - par for the Australian, who stays at one under.

  19. Donaldson finds metalpublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 16 July 2016

    Donaldson (E)

Can I start again? That must be running through Jamie Donaldson's mind as his tee-shot on the first is far, far, far too left with the ball clanging and clattering off the stand.

Things can only get better, Jamie.
