  1. 'Rahm could buck the rookie trend'published at 21:59 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Rahm -1 (10)

    Jay Townsend
BBC Radio 5 live at Augusta

Jon Rahm has defied everything with the start he has made to his professional career. I would not be surprised if he won this week. He has a wonderful touch around the greens. He is a long, strong hitter and is playing with so much confidence. He may buck the rule that rookies do not win at Augusta.

  2. Pouting Ernie...published at 21:58 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

Els (level after 16), Dufner (-2 after 16)

Danny Willett in on 15 for par, a lovely lag putt leaves a tap in. Jason Dufner, two under, has a go for birdie on 16 and should tap that in for par. He's alongside Ernie Els -  he has a long one for birdie.... can't be... can't be.... it's in.

Ernie pouts like a catwalk model as he walks to the hole. He likes that.

    McIlroy (+3 after 10)

Right then Rory, you need this one son. The Northern Irishman is scrabbling for a par on 10 after pulling his approach to the left of the green.

His chip on lacks conviction, leaving him with a tricky putt to save par. He trundles the ball off to the left, it arcs round...and it drops down the drain!

Little emotion from McIlroy, but he will be thinking deep down that he's got out of jail there.

Can that be the spark for a flurry of birdies on the way home?

  5. Lesser-spotted Leepublished at 21:54 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

What's this? A rare sighting of the lesser-spotted Lee Westwood, OK maybe not lesser-spotted, Lee has been a regular at Augusta since 1997.

In that time he has only missed three tournaments, (2001, 2003 and 2004), and has been the runner-up twice.

The Englishman is struggling a little today though, he is three over through 11.

    Willett (level after 14)

A golfer all in white is a brave golfer for me. Danny Willett, anyone would think you are defending champion....

Willett will have a mid-range birdie putt on 15 to move under par. He was three over after two holes.

  7. Lead switcheroo...published at 21:48 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Hoffman (-3 after 12) Dufner (-2 after 15), Garcia (-1 after 11)

Sergio Garcia, you lucky, lucky boy. You've had a right touch.

His approach into the horrible 11th rolls to the water but stops a fraction short and after a chip and four-foot roll in, it's par.

Jason Dufner gives one back on the par-five 15th. Unforgivable, you have to nail the par fives around here and in weather like this, even more so.

Now, can Charley Hoffman tie the lead on the par-three 12th? What a way to deal with Amen Corner...he judges the right-to-left break nicely for birdie.

  8. Give me 10published at 21:40 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Watson (+2 after 8)

'I told you I would play with a pink ball, you owe me 10 press-ups'.

I imagine that is the conversation Bubba Watson had with his caddie Ted Scott, or he is just helping him line up his putt, you decide.

A pink ball and pink glove, I ask you.

    Willett (E after 14)

Danny Willett has come dressed as his caddy. All white. Bold. As is his putting on 14 -eventually. His birdie effort lacks beef, giving him something to think about if he is going to save par. The Yorkshireman takes it on - and sinks it. Good save in the end.

  10. McGirt in the housepublished at 21:37 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    McGirt (-3 after 18)

I bet these guys are relieved that the Brits are giving a good showing out there today, with three Englishmen in the clubhouse under-par.

    British golf fansImage source, Reuters

They will be keeping an eye on William McGirt who has about 10ft to save par and stay at three under on 18. This would be a good up and down as he fired into the crowd a few minutes back. He stands over it...boom. Clubhouse leader.

  11. Postpublished at 21:35 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    McIlroy (+3 after 9)

Another sigh of frustration from Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman reaches the turn without a birdie on the card, a gettable 20-foot putt just refusing to drop. He knocks in for a par four, thinking what might have been.

Don't worry Rory, a strong back half will see you right.

  12. Frustrated Fitzpatrickpublished at 21:34 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Matt Fitzpatrick -1 (18)

When asked how frustrating it was to finish with a double-bogey six at the 18th for a one-under-par 71, Matthew Fitzpatrick replied: "Very. It was not a great tee shot and then I hit the wrong bunker shot and a couple of bad putts."

He was, however, content with his first 17 holes: "I played really nice and solid, not too many mistakes and missed holes in the right areas. It was difficult with the wind swirling but I much prefer playing harder courses to easier ones."

At just 22, that's some playing.

  13. Birdie!published at 21:30 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Rose (-1 after 18), Day (+2 after 18)

Justin Rose removes his cap to reveal a monster of an imprint around his head. How tight has he had that on? Still, it seemed to squeeze his brain into gear as he converts for birdie on 18, ending the day one under. Hats off to him, he dropped two shots in two holes before that final drag.

I do like Justin Rose. I'm not sold on those glasses though.

Jason Day is in for two over.

  14. Eaglepublished at 21:26 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Willett (E after 13)

Level pegging from the champ. Danny Willett has wiped out that nightmare start with an eagle on the par-5 13th.

The Englishman hits the dancefloor with a slick second shot, nailing an 11-foot putt to move back into the chasing pack.

If you offered Willett a level-par round now I reckon he'd snap your hand off.

  16. Meet McGirt, your leaderpublished at 21:24 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

World number 53 William McGirt is a local lad, of sorts.

The 37-year-old was born three hours up the road from Augusta in Robeson County in North Carolina.

2016 was his breakthrough year with his first PGA Tour victory at the Memorial Tournament.

He had a career-high seven top-10 finishes last season, including tied for 10th at the PGA Championship.

His favourite food is a hamburger and he only marks his ball with a quarter.

  19. Joint-leader Dufferspublished at 21:21 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Hoffman (-2 after 10), McGirt (-3 after 17), Dufner (-3 after 14)

Charley Hoffman stands over a birdie putt on 10, his trousers rattle in the wind and his ball is wide - that would have tied the lead. William McGirt can extend his advantage then with a birdie putt of his own but that's tentative and breaks way left - a knee-knocker left for par.

Jason Dufner can now get to three under to share top seat on this leaderboard...four feet left on 14 after a joyous approach... in she goes.

    McIlroy (+3 after 8)

Oh no. Rory McIlroy drops another shot after lagging his chip back on to the eighth green. He drags the par putt left, tapping in for a six.

Scrappier than a bar-room brawl is the Northern Irishman's round.
