  1. First birdie for McIlroypublished at 22:43 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    McIlroy (+2 after 13)

Rory, Rory, Rory. McIlroy takes on Rae's Creek on 13 and from the camera angle behind the green it looks like he will need to borrow my ball retriever. On closer inspection, his ball has held up on the bank.

His ball plugs in the thick stuff but he chips up to six feet and drains the putt

Playing partner Jon Rahm hit a carbon copy second shot but his ends up wet. A chip over and he's got a tiddler to save par.

  2. No ace today...yetpublished at 22:41 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

We were spoiled rotten last year, three holes in one on the 16th made it the most prolific year for the beloved ace in Masters history.

Of the 27 recorded over the years, 18 have come on the 16th hole, including the three mentioned above.

Now that we're on this topic, take a look at Louis Oosthuizen's from last year. A hole in one straight off the billiards table. Just click here.

Westwood (+1 after 14), Lowry (-2), Garcia (-1), Willett (level)

The champion Danny Willett is in the fairway on 18. No heroics, just solid length as he ends level with the pin, some 20ft left of it. An outside birdie chance.

Birdie putts galore on 14 - Shane Lowry... close, Sergio Garcia... wide, Lee Westwood from closer range... in. Westy has got it going a bit, it's birdie, birdie, birdie for him.

  4. Ernie home, Dufner dropspublished at 22:37 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

Els (level after 18), Dufner (-1 after 18)

It's his 23rd Masters and Ernie Els can be proud of that round - he pulls back from a tough position to end level par. A bogey at the last after finding trees cost him a stroke but hey, that's still some going.

Jason Dufner also gives one away at the last. He raced a putt past the hole and walked after it as soon as he'd struck it. An angry walk, a bogey and red numbers at least.

What is caddie Jamie Lane saying to young Matthew Fitzpatrick here? The cleanest and funniest may earn themselves a place in the live text.

'And that is where the azaleas should be in bloom'.

OK mine wasn't that funny, but it was a reference to the fact that some unseasonably warm weather in February caused the azaleas to bloom early, leaving Augusta National bereft of some of their finest flora, send your captions to #bbcgolf and we will compile the best.

    McGirt -3 (18)

Club house leader William McGirt speaking to Radio 5 live sports extra: "Anytime you break 70 around here its great, especially in these conditions today.

"There was really no preparing for it, the yardage book was merely a suggestion today - more to look at pictures than anything.

"It was pretty tough, the wind swirls so bad, no ideas where it was coming from, it was all over the place."

    Hoffman (-4 after 14)

There's only one Hoff you want to be right now and it ain't David.

It's Charley. His long putt on the par-four 14th is travelling at some pace but it's more Bullseye than Jim Bowen. Par five next, he could stretch this lead.

  9. Birdiepublished at 22:24 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Thomas (level after 11), Lowry (-2 after 13), Garcia (-1 after 13)

Shane Lowry has around 30ft for eagle on the 13th, this to go three under....nope. But it's birdie. Sergio Garcia takes his drop and sticks it close - should save par.

Justin Thomas - my pick for the week - drains a monster on 11 for birdie. That had bend and distance. He's back to level par. Go on JT, make me an office legend!

  10. McIlroy saves par...againpublished at 22:23 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    McIlroy (+3 after 12)

Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy are both in a similar position at the back of the 12th green, both have pulled their putters from the bag.

    You first, senor.

Spain's Rahm rolls his 10 foot past the can, McIlroy doesn't learn and whacks his seven foot by.

Rahm can't save...but McIlroy can. Gritty play from the Northern Irishman again. It is keeping him within striking distance.

  12. A lap...shot!published at 22:21 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

How many Masters officials does it take to hit a golf shot? Well, three if you accidentally hit your ball in to the lap of a spectator (or patron at Augusta).

This is what happened to Jordan Spieth on the 18th hole, although we would hazard a guess that he did not take his shot from where it came to rest. We are impressed with her statue technique as she waiting for Spieth to get to his ball.

    McIlroy (+3 after 11)

No chances from McIlroy on Golden Bell. The Northern Irishman knows Rae's Creek is lurking and ready to gulp up his ball, so he punches one to the back of the green. Safety.

Then he strides across Hogan Bridge with Spanish playing partner Jon Rahm, resisting the temptation to pretend to push him into the water. That should be part of the initiation for an Augusta debutant...

Birdie, birdie, birdie. Ernie Els tickles a putt down the hill on 17, a treacherous putt but 'The Big Easy' could do with another 10 holes here because he is flying!

    McIlroy (+3 after 11)

Rory McIlroy is having a right old ding-dong with this hardest of opponents. The world number two pushes his approach on the 11th, leaving with a tricky chip onto the sloping green.

Oh my. He has the Augusta crowd purring with a perfectly-weighted dink to three feet, nudging in the tiddler to save another par.

    On to the 12th...

  16. What a shot!published at 22:13 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Hoffman (-3 after 13), Dufner (-2 after 17)

Some shot from Jason Dufner on 17 as he wedges from behind the green to within a foot. The skilled hands of a Las Vegas croupier on show from Duffers. Charley Hoffman, who I got stuck into for being greedy on 13 - saves par. That's why he's a PGA Tour pro and I'm bashing out a live text. Kudos Charley, kudos. A nice 10 ft save.

Charley Hoffman, greedier than a child at a donut buffet. Nicely placed on the 13th he goes for the green in two on this par five - in the water. Guts no glory.

Sergio Garcia (-1), Shane Lowry (-1) and Lee Westwood (+3) let rip back on the tee box on this hole.

England's Chris Wood (12) and Australian Marc Leishman (10) are both back at par and on the brink of excellent rounds.

To Danny Willett on the 16th, around six feet for par. Putter head back, putter head through... ball in hole. He's cobbled together something decent after a starting his round with two sixes in two holes.

    William McGirt (-3 after 18)

Our clubhouse leader William McGirt is ruddy of cheek and softly spoken. After his first Masters round at Augusta he tells Sky Sports: "It was pretty darn special. Any time to break 70 is awesome. The few times i came down here to play in practice the wind direction was the same so this was not new to me today.

"I played Tuesday with Bubba and Jordan joined us. I've picked some guys brains over the last few months. I'm lucky enough to know a few members here and I've spoken to a few caddies and they've been happy to share their knowledge with me."
