Justin Rose looks a bit tense over a tricky par save. It's around 10ft but bends like a Dennis Taylor trick shot. Right to left, the snaking begins but it doesn't turn enough. That's bogey and he's level par going up 18. Two shots gone in two holes.

Paul Casey is in the clubhouse on 18 for level par. Both he and Rose are among a record 11 Englishmen here.

    McIlroy (+2 after 7)

Rory McIlroy is wearing a look of a teenager who has just been told he/she is grounded and can't go to the school disco. Anger, disappointment, bewilderment.

Why? Because he just clubbed his third shot on the par-five eight long. He scratches his head, he looks at the course guide. None the wiser by the look of it.

Matthew Fitzpatrick had the chance to break 70 at the final hole. In the last 59 Masters at least one person has shot in he 60s in the first round. We don't have anyone yet on that.

  4. Double bogeypublished at 21:09 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Fitzpatrick (-1 after 18)

Matthew Fitzpatrick, you diamond turned pebble. Glittering all day and then a nasty final hole puts a chink on the card. Wide off the tee, back into position, then into the sand, a long putt up the hill breaks away right and leaves a tester for bogey... wide again. Tap in double.

From three under to one under. Still, he high-fives the caddie and seems content.

    Spieth (+3 after 18)

Rule out Jordan Spieth at your peril. The 2015 champion played some decent golf in an opening-round 75 - that quadruple-bogey NINE on the 15th proving to be a complete card-wrecker.

    O'Hair (+4 after 18)

This is how you move from level par to four over on the back nine. Card officially wrecked.

    McIlroy (+2 after 7), Day (+1 after 16)

Away from the ball striking, it looks like Rory has been keeping it in the gym. He must be living on that bench press machine. Shoulders wide enough to host a summer picnic on, pectorals rounder than a beach ball.

Rors roars in anger as he is wayward off the tee on eight.

Jason Day meanwhile looks a little leaner than 12 months ago. Either that or it's true what they say - black can be slimming.

  8. McGirt joins the leadpublished at 21:00 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    McGirt (-3 after 16)

Well, if Matthew Fitzpatrick does end up dropping a shot on the 18th then William McGirt will be there waiting to snatch the lead off him.

He's moved to three under after a birdie at the 16th.

    Pressure on.

The secret to being a top on-the-course reporter, a kit bag full of props.

And Ken Brown is no stranger to a bag of tricks, take a look at what he has for this week at Augusta below.

Ken will be out on the course when the live and uninterrupted coverage of Saturday and Sunday's rounds air on BBC Two.

And here's how you can follow the action over the next four days on the BBC.

    Mickelson (-1 after 17)

Phil Mickelson has a chance for birdie at the 17th.

Old Lefty tickles it down the slope, but it never quite catches the line and he struts up to the tap it in for par from three feet.

He heads to the last on at one under.

  13. Rory save, Sergio movepublished at 20:53 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    McIlroy (+2 after 7), Garcia (-1 after 8), Lowry (-1 after 8)

Yes Rory! Fizz one between the trees after finding trouble old boy. Like us shoddy club golfers who cannot accept those moments when we should take our punishment, he clips one between tree trunks and finds the fringe of the putting surface. A poor chip follows but it's back to some show-stopping with the putt as it sinks from range. Cracking save sir and fully deserved for that tree-fizzer.

A hole ahead there are birdies for Sergio Garcia and Shane Lowry. A delightful wedge to within two feet does the job for Lowry while Sergio downs a 15ft putt as easy as pie.

    Fitzpatrick (-3 after 17)

    Crikey.

Don't let it all fall apart now.

The 18th has proved troublesome today, just ask Thomas Pieters, and Matthew Fitzpatrick becomes the latest to send his tee shot sprawling towards the trees.

Time to show what he's made of.

  15. Back-to-back birdies for Daypublished at 20:51 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Day (+1 after 16)

Jason Day is on the climb.

That's back-to-back birdies for the former world number one, having double-bogeyed the 11th.

That takes him to one over.

  16. Postpublished at 20:48 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    Fitzpatrick (-3 after 17)

Matthew Fitzpatrick is making this look simple.

He steps up and sinks his putt to stay on three under for the round.

A cracking opening round from the Englishman, let's hope I've not put the jinx on him...

    Fitzpatrick (-3 after 16)

Matthew Fitzpatrick drags his tee shot slightly left at the 17th, but it's a decent enough lie for the leader.

He scuttles one up to the edge of the green, and it looks like another par could be on the cards for the 22-year-old...

  18. Postpublished at 20:44 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

World number 127 Kevin Streelman did not qualify for the Masters this year.

The American, who finished 12th in 2015, is actually on jury duty.

But that didn't stop him keeping tabs on all the goings on in Augusta...

    Spieth (+3 after 16)

I tell you what, if Jordan Spieth could bottle his mental toughness and flog it then he would be a millionaire. If he wasn't already a millionaire.

The American had a horror show on the 15th with that quadruple bogey. Then he whacks his tee-shot on the 16th - that beautiful little par-3 where you have to carry over the water to hit the green - to within three foot.

Easy finish, one knocked off the deficit.
