  1. Luck has a bit of luckpublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Luck (+5)

Holy moly. US amateur champion Curtis Luck has plenty of, er, luck as he sinks a beauty of 30-foot putt on the 10th. That puts him one under par for the day - he's one of only six men to be in the red so far today.

    Garcia (-3), Westwood (-1)

Back to business for Sergio Garcia after that blip on the fourth. The Spaniard hits the dancefloor in two on the par-4 fourth, needing two putts before seeing his ball disappear below the surface.

Lee Westwood joins him in scribbling down a par four on his card. As you were.

  4. Hoffman bogeyspublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Hoffman (-7 after 6)

Sound the alarm. Charley Hoffman has dropped a shot.

It's come at the par-three sixth, where the 40-year-old two-putted to card his first bogey of the day.

But let's put into context Hoffman's Masters so far, he's one of only five men currently under par.

Solid stuff from the pretty much unheralded American, who is level for the day after an opening seven-under-par round.

Putt missed, putt missed, putt missed.

The dreaded three blows on the green claims Rory McIlroy on the third. He missed a three footer for par.

The Masters is renowned for lots of birdies and big roars from the patrons that echo around the golf course but I really enjoyed watching the players struggle a bit in the testing windy conditions yesterday.

I was sitting at the par-five 15th which is normally one of the easiest holes on the golf course but yesterday it was proving to be very tricky and it was fascinating to watch the players make the same mistakes time after time after time. We watched Jordan Spieth take a humbling nine shots there, Ross Fisher took eight.

You almost wanted to go down and tell the next group what you had just seen to try and help them.

It was also amazing to see a two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson, playing in the last group of the day, finishing off his last few holes in front of empty grandstands as it was so cold that lots of the spectators had decided to pack up and go home. Bubba wasn’t best pleased.

You can listen to live commentary from Augusta on Radio 5 live from 21:00 BST.

  7. Mize in the mixpublished at 16:39 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Mize (tee-time 16:40 BST)

It was 30 years ago today, Larry Mize taught Augusta how to play.

You need to say that to the tune of Sgt Pepper. Groan. Everyone loves The Beatles, just go with it.

Anyway... the 58-year-old American is back at the Masters on the 30th anniversary of his 1987 win.

And he's going well. Mize shot a two-over-par 74 yesterday, sticking him just behind the chasing pack.

    No substitute for experience, eh.

    Hoffman -8 (5)

The University of Nevada lucked out in the late 90s with their golf team.

Our current leader Charley Hoffman was a member of their 1998 NCAA championship team, which also included Masters champion Adam Scott and Chad Campbell, who finished second in Augusta in 2009 plus professionals Bill Lunde and Chris Riley.

Hoffman graduated with a communications degree and turned pro in 2000.

The 40-year-old started playing when he was seven-years-old and was a 150/1 outsider before the start of this week.

A massive shout out to Middlesex batsman Will Gubbins.

In light of Danny Willett's eight on the first, we are asking you for those moments when your sporting dream or ambition ended in catastrophe. We've had tales of Sunday league woe and shanked tee shots but Will has delivered video evidence of a relative making a hash of things.

    Keep them coming, #bbcgolf.

  10. Bogey for Garciapublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Garcia (-3), Westwood (-1)

Sergio Garcia could not keep the birdie train going at full steam ahead. And probably because we jinxed him.

We said he couldn't miss with his putter...then he three-putts on the next. That's the first time this week the Spaniard has dropped a shot.

Lee Westwood and Shane Lowry, the other two in his three-ball, walk off with threes.

  11. Hoff's hotpublished at 16:33 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Hoffman (-8 after 5)

Charley Hoffman finds a bunker lurking to the left of the fairway on the fifth, but when you're hot, you're hot... right?

A touch of sand doesn't stop the leader scrambling out to make par and maintain his five-shot lead.

Jonathan Jackaman:  Worst start to a golf round, hit my tee shot, went straight up, caught the wind and blew sideways and backwards onto the 18th green.

James Mitchell: My Dad stood on the first tee, hooked his ball in the nearby road, in the process of taking his swing his remote for his remote control trolley reversed the trolley into the starters hut knocking over his partners bag and snapping the RC trolley.

    A catalogue of errors James.

    McIlroy (level after 2)

Rory McIlroy took full advantage of that 393 yard drive on two. His eagle putt left a dolly tap in and he repairs the damage from dropping a shot on one. He's back to how he went to bed last night - level.

  14. Frustration for Willettpublished at 16:24 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Willett (+6 after 8)

Birdie chance for Danny Willett at the eighth...

    But he can't convert.

The defending champion watches one sail wide of the cup from around eight feet and then fires a frustrated glance at the Augusta turf.

He makes it down in par to stay six over.

  15. Postpublished at 16:24 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Garcia (-4), Westwood (-1)

Should have gone a club higher. Both Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood fall short of the green on the 240-yard, par three 4th.

No such problems for playing partner Shane Lowry. The beefy Irishman would have got there with a putter. He's two over for the day, and two over overall.

  17. Champion's form?published at 16:19 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Hoffman (-8 after 4), McGirt (-3 after 14)

It's smart stuff from leader Charley Hoffman at the minute, as he makes short work of the par-three fourth to stay eight under.

And just as he does so, the American's closest contender heading into day two drops a shot further behind.

William McGirt breaks his run of 10 pars with a bogey on the 14th. That'll be music to Hoffman's ears.

Sergio Garcia is now his closest rival.

  18. Boom!published at 16:13 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

Into the heart of the fairway, this brings up an eagle chance surely?

  19. Bogeypublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Garcia (-4), Westwood (-1)

Lee Westwood could do with Sergio's short stick. Westy pushes a five-foot par putt wide, dropping him back into the small army of players on one under.

The Worksop Wonder's round is more up and down than an Alpine mountain range. Bogey, birdie, bogey.

  20. Birdiepublished at 16:10 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Garcia (-4), Westwood (-2)

    Birdie, birdie, birdie. Twit twoo!

Sergio Garcia is putting with a missile. It's sinking everything.

The Spaniard hits the target with a 22-footer on the third, moving him into joint-second alongside William McGirt.
