Paul Mulligan: RoryMcIlroy needs a magical back nine to make the weekend at the #USOpen. Not looking likely at the minute.

Michael Davis: I predict Rory will never win another major. Can't putt and poor around greens. Over par again today

Talking of those needing birdies to make the weekend - Rory McIlroy and Jason Day - the whole of the world's top six are currently over par...

Dustin Johnson, Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth and Henrik Stenson... over to you.

    Rose E, McIlroy +6, Day +6 (9*)

A lot of these fans must have knocked off early for the weekend, the crowd looks and sounds a lot bigger than it did at this time yesterday.

There's a good group following that McIlroy/Rose/Day group as they tee off at the first, having started their rounds at the 10th.

It looks like the cut will be around +1, +2 today, so McIlroy and Day need to get moving...

    Rose +1, McIlroy +6, Day +6

    Jason DayImage source, Reuters

Jason Day's morning has been as undulating as this glacier-carved Erin Hills course. Three birdies, two bogeys - that puts him one under for Friday.

He's out with Rory McIlroy, who's evens through eight, and Justin Rose. The Englishman looked best placed of the trio to make a move before a double bogey at the last.

There's a birdie chance at the 18th, though, where he makes the rolling fescue-skirted fairway.

It's a whole lotta sand for Day, who finds the bunker.

    "A ball, for my birthday?!"

    It's Phil Mickelson's birthday today...

But the 47-year-old isn't at Erin Hills to enjoy it, as he withdrew yesterday to attend daughter Amanda's graduation.

It does mean I can roll out this tidbit again though, that this US Open is the first time that neither Mickelson or Tiger Woods have played in the first round of a major since the Masters in 1994!

Another man enjoying a fantastic round today is Japan's Satoshi Kodaira.

He's carded five birdies to soar into contention at three under par, having dropped a shot at the 10th.

At the other end of things, Kevin Na's day is going from bad to worse after another bogey - his fifth of the day.

He might want to remember the advice course designers Hurdzan Golf gave him after his rant about the long grass: "Dear Kevin, Don't hit in the rough. Problem solved."

    Schauffele -7 (5)

Xander Schauffele, remember the name - even if you can't say it.

The 23-year-old now shares the lead with compatriot Rickie Fowler after a birdie at the par-four fifth.

It looks like Schauffele has played in 16 events this season and only placed in the top 20 once - a fifth place at the Sanderson Farms Championship in October.

He's ranked 352nd in the world.

The Masters champion finishes off his front nine with a birdie, and all of a sudden there's a smile back on the face of the Spaniard!

Maybe that's because he's approaching the first, where he eagled yesterday...

Two birdies for Garcia so far today brings him to three under, four off the lead.

  13. Pepperell on the movepublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

Eddie Pepperell is putting a solid round together, he's just moved to two under par.

If you missed it, you should read Iain Carter's piece with Pepperell on how he made this year's US Open after a torrid run of form that saw him having to return to Tour School.

The 26-year-old has notched four birdies today. Good stuff.

  15. Kim on the chargepublished at 16:05 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Kim -5 (9*)

I'm going to salute my tournament pick while he's still in the mix, before inevitably putting the jinx on him.

Kim Si-woo has three birdies as he hits the turn, taking him two shots off the lead at five under par.

I watched the South Korean win the Players Championship last month and he was just ruthlessly efficient, so had a feeling the nature of this Erin Hills course - where hitting fairways is key - might suit the 21-year-old.

    Fingers crossed.

  16. That Friday feeling? Well...published at 16:00 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Levy +11 (9)

The guys that went out early on Thursday looked to have got the best of the conditions, with plenty going under par.

Friday is already looking a lot trickier, as France's Alexander Levy will vouch for.

He is six over for the round through nine, and tied last with American Garrett Osborn on 11 over par for the tournament.

Andrew Neil: 2017 would start to look likea great year in the majors if Casey was to join Garcia in the winners circle. Maybe Westwood's Open?

Mungo: I predict McIlroy will be under par by the end of this round . I suspect I am in the minority.

Alex Adams: My two tips before the start of play were Pieters and Day, fair to say I don't win too often

Oh dear. The forecast in Wisconsin wasn't great, but this wasn't on the agenda... Paul Casey has just carded an EIGHT.

It's a snowman for the Englishman at the par-five 14th. That's what Erin Hills can do to you.

He shared a slice of the lead four holes ago, now Casey is back to three under and four strokes adrift of Rickie Fowler.

  19. E coli found in water fountainpublished at 15:46 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

Bit of a news update from Wisconsin for you...

Spectators at the US Open will be given free bottled water today after traces of E coli were discovered in a public water fountain at Erin Hills.

Nobody has been reported ill after drinking from the hydration facility during practice days, and it was shut off on Thursday morning.

Tournament organisers the United States Golf Association (USGA) said in a statement: "The water line to the hydration system was disconnected immediately and bottled water was provided to guests while we waited for the preliminary results to be confirmed by the public health department."

  20. Bogey for Bubbapublished at 15:44 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Garcia -2, Scott +1, Watson +4 (7*)

    Bubba WatsonImage source, Reuters

Bubba Watson's tournament has never really got going, and he's just dropped a shot on the par-three 16th.

That puts Bubba four over in total. He's playing alongside Adam Scott, who picked up four shots in his final four holes yesterday, including an eagle at the 18th.

Sergio Garcia completes that particular trio, and the Masters winner is level par for the day. He's two under overall.
