In the field we have an amateur by the name of Cameron Champ at five under. Then of course there is Maverick McNealy at three over.

Two amateurs, two great names. Destined for greatness with names like that?

With this in mind, what would you name your offspring to guarantee sporting success?

    Johnson +2, Spieth E, Kaymer -1 (1)

Dustin Johnson had set about chasing down that cut from the off.

There's a beautiful clunk as club head hits ball and the world number one chips on to the green, watching his effort skittle along towards the cup.

    Nice hands.

  4. Postpublished at 20:48 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Fowler -8 (4)

Fowler has a long putt for birdie, he sends it up the slope and it breaks right a touch... a touch too much.

That'll be another par for the leader though. Steady stuff. No need to push it.

    Fowler -8 (3)

Rickie Fowler was asked his game plan for Friday. His response? "Hit the fairway."

Well, the game plan is working so far. Four from four. 100%.

  7. Birdies all roundpublished at 20:40 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Johnson +2, Spieth E, Kaymer -1 (1)

Birdie putt for Jordan Spieth. Kerching. That's on the money.

Can Martin Kaymer and Dustin Johnson follow suit? You bet. They're all dropping in.

  8. Greller gamblepublished at 20:36 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Spieth (+1 on the first)

    GrellerImage source, .

Did you know Jordan Spieth's caddie Michael Greller was a teacher back in the day. He used to carry the bag in tournaments here and there in his spare time. Then Mr Spieth told him he was turning pro and asked Greller for his full-time assistance.

Greller didn't know if he should leave the security of his job and put the dilemma to his family. He was told he would always regret it if Spieth one day won the Masters. So he went for it and duly, Spieth won the Masters within a couple of years.

Greller now has a lot more money in his bank account than he did when teaching.

Wowsa. That Dustin Johnson approach came down with snow on it. Was that an iron?

Martin Kaymer shows him how it's done, hammering one beyond the fescue lurking beneath and on to the green.

He's in with a birdie shout.

Zach Johnson playing with the excitement he could have done with in his winner's speech when he took the Open in 2015. Birdie on one is followed by a classy wedge into the second green and he makes no mistake from 10ft or so.

He's in the hunt. Hopefully he cracks a few gags in his speech if he gets it done this time and sticks to 90 seconds rather than around 90 minutes.

    Fowler -8, Matsuyama E (3)

This putt is going to need a bit of pace, but Rickie Fowler doesn't want to overdo it.

There it goes, up the gentle Erin Hills slope gathering momentum. He'll take par. As does Hideki Matsuyama.

    Fowler -8, Matsuyama E (2)

Rickie Fowler has a pretty long birdie chance, but you wouldn't put it past him in this form.

Hideki Matsuyama has just overshot the green slightly, down the slope the left. The Japanese golfer is sporting a yellow top today, and his golf has started just as brightly.

Matsuyama guides a deft clip on to the green and it nestles by the cup.

  13. Booming Brookspublished at 20:26 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Koepka (-7 after 3)

    DumbellImage source, .

Brooks Koepka has a set of guns on him. He must keep it in the gym in his spare time. The 12th hole - his third of the day - measures 437 yards. After two shots he has about two yards left. His second shot pitches next to the pin. A seriously good start and he's breathing on the back of Rickie Fowler's neck...

  14. Postpublished at 20:23 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Johnson +3, Spieth +1, Kaymer E

Here come a few heavyweights. The past three winners, in fact.

Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Martin Kaymer.

The German is first on the tee to warm applause, and more follows as he pitches up on the fairway.

I fancy the two Americans to get an even better reception. Yep, Spieth's tee shot is followed by shouts of "get in the hole" - as if - and DJ follows him on to the good stuff.

  15. Fleetwood issue, hot Hoff...published at 20:20 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Hoffman (-5 after 5), Johnson (-2 after 1), Fleetwood (-4 after 2)

Zach Johnson gets things off and running with birdie. Not a big hitter but dare I tempt fate for him, he tends to keep it straight. The putt is of decent length and he raises his right hand as it drops.

Tommy Fleetwood is up near the third green and elects to putt from off the surface. That ball is picking up pace and going some... he will have to make a big one to save par.

They'd all love to be Charley Hoffman out there right now, five holes, three birdies, the latest sees him drop the putt from near the Canadian border. Big.

  17. Fowler takes outright leadpublished at 20:15 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Fowler -8, Matsuyama E (2)

It's a birdie for Rickie Fowler at the second - and that gives him the outright lead.

Fowler is playing alongside Japan's Hideki Matsuyama and Spain's Jon Rahm.

Matsuyama is teetering on the brink of the cut and needs birdies if he's going to keep his weekend alive.

So how about this for a start? Birdie, birdie! He's back to level par through two.

  18. 'It's about simple golf'published at 20:13 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Casey -7

Paul Casey is the joint-leader, but it was a real rollercoaster of a round from the Englishman.

He carded an eight on the par-five 14, but then made five successive birdies.

"I'm very happy with today's round," he said. "At a US Open, in all majors, something is going to happen to you at and it is how you react."

So how did Casey turn his game around?

"I'm looking at post 15 on and it's great," he told Sky Sports.

"Fairways and greens, and I laced a drive down 17 to get a birdie. I had to steady the ship and then continued to do it on the front nine.

"It's about simple golf. The mistakes were just getting out of position."

  19. Bogey for Westy...published at 20:11 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Koepka (-6 after 2) Westwood (-2 after 1)

    KoepkaImage source, Getty Images

We have a new man in second. Brooks Koepka, a young American who hits it a long, long way drains a long putt. Koepka tends to have a meltdown from time to time but surely he will shake that habit off?

His partner is a professional footballer in the women's league in Sweden.

Koepka's joy is Lee Westwood's dismay as the Englishman flounders on the first. A par five too and he makes bogey. Poor off the tee, then into sand, always chasing it.

As things stand, the cut is at two over.

Some names missing out on the weekend then: Justin Rose, Chris Wood, Adam Scott, Henrik Stenson, Charl Schwartzel, Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Jimmy Walker.

Some of them will survive if the mark drops to plus three.
