    McIlroy +6 (16*)

Rory McIlroy is putting a little run together on the back nine. Perhaps he's finally got his eye in on day two after a lack of golf this season?

The Northern Irishman has three birdies from his last four holes, taking him level for the day with two to play.

  3. Putting show...published at 19:10 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

Rose (level) Fitzpatrick (-2, both after 16)

Some serious putting out there from Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick. Rose from range nails birdie to get back to level par with two to play. Young Fitzy is off the putting surface but pumps the thing right in there. Not an ounce of emotion on show from him, a real poker face.

    Willett +9 (WD)

You might remember Danny Willett withdrew from the Players Championship last month saying his "body and mind need a rest".

He was 11-over-par for through 27 holes at Sawgrass at that point.

The Englishman has a history of back problems though, and that also saw him pull out of the World Cup in Australia last November.

  5. Garcia donepublished at 19:05 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Garcia (-3)

    SergioImage source, .

There was of course that chat about what winning the Masters would do for Sergio Garcia. Would it kick him on to win more of the sport's biggest titles? He's shaken that 'nearly man' tag after all.

On his last hole of the day though he's tentative over a birdie putt and that will leave him three under. If Rickie Fowler takes this tournament on a gear today Sergio could be some way back.

He was fifth at the US Open last year. Garcia is of course the only man who could do the Grand Slam this year. OK it's a long shot but...

  6. Willett withdrawspublished at 19:04 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

Press Association's Phil Casey says Danny Willett has withdrawn... and the USGA scoreboard confirms it.

The 2016 Masters champion carded an opening nine over par on Thursday.

    Watson +5 (17*)

    Bubba WatsonImage source, Getty

Bubba Watson has opted for his yellow ball today. It's not quite as easy to spot when it's airborne as the pink one from yesterday, but there's no mistaking where that tee shot on his final hole - the ninth - drops.

    Right near the pin.

Bubba is likely going home, but he could finish with back-to-back birdies here.

  8. Sergio in shape...published at 18:56 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Garcia (-3 after 17)

There are now a handful of men five under and another cluster on four under. Sergio Garcia is trying to join that latter group on his last hole, a par three. Lovely strike, birdie chance.

  9. Postpublished at 18:56 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Casey -7 (16*)

Paul Casey has a birdie chance, and a chance to take the outright lead.

He's about eight feet from the pin, coaxes one cup-wards, but the Englishman just doesn't have his angles right.

Close, but not close enough. Casey takes par and remains tied for the lead.

  10. Horrible!published at 18:55 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Hadwin (-2 after 17)

Adam Hadwin just made a right pig's ear of the 17th. You just can't do that and expect to compete at a major. He's near the green for two but duffs a chip short on this par four. Try again... this time it's on the green but not near the pin. Putt for bogey... nope. Double it is.

    Charity, absolute charity.

Anyone who shot one-over-par 73 or better in Thursday's opening round at Erin Hills, beat the average score of 73.385.

The long par-three sixth, which measured 252 yards, was ranked the most difficult hole with only four birdies and averaged more than a third of a stroke over par.

The 18th was the longest hole at 632 yards, but the closing par-5 proved the easiest hole in relation to par.

  14. Casey prime... Woo Kim finishedpublished at 18:47 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Casey (-7 after 15), English (-4 after 17) Woo Kim (-5)

    Paul CaseyImage source, Reuters

Harris English has never really done it in majors but something's going on with the American here as he makes it three birdies in four holes. A mid-range putt bends like a banana and it drops. He's in the mix on four under.

Paul Casey should have the lead on his own in a moment as he's demolishing a par five. Second shot from the fairway leads him to state: "Line is great but not sure it's far enough."

It's not far enough but he's near the green and in great shape.

A dropped shot for Si Woo Kim. Into the bunker on his final hole - a par three - and after a sublime escape he misses the putt. Solid round though sir.

  15. Schauffele drops out of leadpublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Schauffele -5 (13)

Just like that, Erin Hills can eat you up.

Xander Schauffele chips over the green after pulling his tee shot short and left on the par-three 13th, and takes three shots to recover.

The US Open debutant drops two shots and surrenders his share of the lead.

    Oosthuizen (+1) Rose (+1, both after 15)

    OosthuizenImage source, Getty Images

The tournament is creeping away from the likes of Louis Oosthuizen and Justin Rose, both a shot over par for the championship.

Oosthuizen has hit 12 fairways from 12 today but is just one under for the day. Both men have three holes to go and stand on a par five. They need something...

  17. Double bogey!published at 18:40 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Rose +1, McIlroy +7, Day +9 (14*)

    ... and it's on Jason Day's scorecard.

He had a shocker on the back nine yesterday, and it's proved costly for Day again since the turn.

He started from the 10th tee today, so it's two, four and five that have caused Day problems in round two - including that double bogey to take him to nine over.

Rory McIlroy is in that group, and is also not having it his own way at Erin Hills.

Back-to-back birdies for the Northern Irishman though, as he moves to seven over par.

    Garcia (-3 after 16)

A fist pump. We have not had many of those just yet but Sergio Garcia has that Spanish blood running through him and his right hand springs up after a cracking putt on his 16th hole of the day. That ball was travelling at pace so he will be thankful gravity took charge.

Sergio hunting majors. Anyone would think he's won one recently....

    Schauffele (-7 after 12) Thomas (-3 after 15) Casey (-7 after 15)

We have a three-way lead. Xander Schauffele, the young American who has never been in this kind of company before, rattles in a putt with some right-to-left break on it. He's going some this kid.

Paul Casey can wrestle the advantage back though on the sixth... nope. Long putt doesn't threaten. Justin Thomas from closer in... sets himself... right to left break... sweet. Birdie baby.
