The good thing about speaking to you from behind the comfort of the live text is I don't have to attempt to pronounce Xander Schauffele's name - just spell it right...

What I can tell you is that the American is tied second and is under way on day two.

He's level for Friday's round through two holes, which keeps him at six under par for the championship with England's Paul Casey.

    Willett +9 (19:58 BST) Day +6 McIlroy +7 (3*)

Those two are part of a trio of men with a handful of majors between them that are nestled in the bottom few places of this 156-strong field.

Rory McIlroy hit just five fairways on Thursday - no player hit fewer, while Danny Willett averaged 2.06 putts per hole, that was 155th in the field.

    Rose -1, Day +6, McIlroy +7 (3*)

Right, let's have a look at that Rose/McIlroy/Day group then.

Justin Rose opened his second round with a birdie and has just added back-to-back pars to stay one under through three.

Rory McIlroy and Jason Day look in serious danger of missing the cut, though the Australian is making a good fist of it.

Birdie-bogey-birdie for Day, who is on six over, while a bogey at the third leaves McIlroy trailing a further shot behind.

Let's not forget how impressive that opening round was from Casey though - here's what he had to say.

    Casey -6 (3*)

Well, Paul Casey's share of the lead was short-lived, he's just bogeyed on his third hole of the day.

It looks like the fescue might have been to blame, with Casey criss-crossing the fairway and having to lay up from the long grass and taking four shots to reach the green.

Kevin Na is an having an absolute nightmare at the start of his second round.

You might've seen the American's Instagram video earlier in the week where he criticised the USGA for the knee-high fescue that makes up the Erin Hills rough?

Well, Na then went and shot himself into a contention with a four-under-par round that included six birdies.

But he's just gone and undone all that hard work. Na carded back-to-back bogeys on his second and third holes of the day, and then followed up with a double bogey!

    He's back to level par.

  11. Time for him to add some events?published at 14:55 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    McIlroy +6 (2*)

    Jay Townsend
BBC Radio 5 live at Erin Hills

Rory McIlroy certainly struggled on Thursday and evidently needs more time on the course, could more events in the calendar help him improve?

"Is it time for him to add some events to get ready? You have to ask that question because playing two rounds, occasionally isn't going to help him get better.

If he misses the cut, which is highly likely, you have to start thinking 'OK, I need to get some alternate rounds under my belt'.

The French Open would be a great event at a Ryder Cup venue. It's great golf course, a finely prepared golf course."

  12. Casey ties for the leadpublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Casey -7 (2*)

Woooahhh. No sooner do I pop a leaderboard through and it's out of date.

So who's muscling in on top spot? It's Paul Casey! The Englishman, who started Friday's round from the 10th, birdies at the 11th to go joint-top with Rickie Fowler.

Come on then, who's lumped on the 39-year-old?

  13. Life at the top...published at 14:46 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    How they stand

Rickie Fowler led from early on and despite several threats to his low opening round, he finishes top going into day two. Here's the top of the US Open leaderboard...

    (All US unless stated)

    -7 R Fowler

-6 P Casey (Eng), Xander Schauffele

    -5 B Harman, T Fleetwood (Eng), B Koepka

-4 P Reed, Adam Hadwin (Can)

  14. Birdie!published at 14:43 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Rose -1, Day +6, McIlroy +6 (1*)

Welcome to Wisconsin, Justin Rose... that's an early birdie for the Englishman, who is up and down the par-four 10th in three.

Jason Day follows suit with a birdie on a hole that cost him three shots yesterday!

    That's more like it.

  15. Rose 'grinds' through day onepublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

Justin Rose is in that group with Rory McIlroy and also had trouble finding the fairway on day one, but to the Englsihman's credit he ended level par.

Rose said he had to "grind" his way round the course.

The Olympic champion, who won this title in 2013, was one under playing the last but missed a 10-foot birdie putt and took two more to finish with a bogey and level-par 72.

That was by far and away the best score in that group, with Jason Day shooting seven over.

    Johnston -2 (4*)

Is there such thing as a 'live text commentator's curse'?

If so, we've got to stop putting the rot on Andrew 'Beef' Johnston.

Yesterday, Luke was praising the enigmatic Englishman and then he went and carded back-to-back bogeys. I've just shouted about him today and guess what... a bogey followed.

That's Beef back to two under.

US Open 2017: McIlroy rues errant driving after opening 78

Ever made a comment that's come back to bite you? Step up, Rory McIlroy...

Prior to the tournament, the 28-year-old Northern Irishman had defended the severity of the rough, saying the fairways were "the widest played at a US Open" and "if we can't hit within that avenue, you might as well pack your bags and go home".

McIlroy then hit just five fairways in his opening round - the joint worst in the 156-man field.

"I don't think I hit a fairway from the 10th and you cannot play this golf course if you are not in position off the tee," he said.

"It was just one of those days. My timing was just a little bit off. I started missing some left and tried to correct it and missed a couple right."

The leader doesn't head out until this evening, but there's plenty to tickle your fancy as we join you this afternoon.

Paul Casey has just got under way, and his group were followed to the tee box by Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Jason Day.

Masters champion Sergio Garcia is also out alongside Bubba Watson and Adam Scott.

What's that? Day two of the US Open and there are a host of Brits in contention for top spot?

Yes, they said this year's championship might be unpredictable, and so it's proved with a contingent of more unlikely players vying for the lead.

Paul Casey is pushing frontrunner Rickie Fowler the hardest, he was one behind the American on six under and tied for second heading into Friday's round.

Southport's Tommy Fleetwood also enjoyed a cracking opening day, he's a shot further back, while Andrew 'Beef' Johnston and Lee Westwood are at three under.

But it's Rickie who leads the way...
