Jordan Spieth with the touch of a master carpenter there. Flicking a chip from the back of the 17th green to within a foot.

J.B Holmes is in the clubhouse at six under. A fine round.

Martin Kaymer fist bumps his caddie and why not, birdie on 17 from around 15ft. Three off the lead. Dustin Johnson makes bogey on 17. He will now miss the weekend.

    Kaymer (-3 after 16), Johnson (+3 after 16) Spieth (level after 16)

Martin Kaymer will have a look at birdie on 17 after a good approach which runs a little past the flag, it'll just be an outside chance. Jordan Spieth is through the green, his struggles continue. Dustin Johnson is short of the dancefloor and it looks like the cut is coming for him.

Patrick Reed gives one back on 17.

There are a few out there now like Ernie Els (-2), Martin Kaymer (-3) and Scotland's Martin Laird (-2) who know no further damage to their card will see them nicely placed for the weekend. Just a couple of holes to get through gents...

    Fleetwood (-7)

Tommy Fleetwood tells BBC Sport's Chris Latchem that "a lot of good putts" were a feature of his work as he made it to seven under and a share of the lead.

"Early on I hit a couple of bad drives and one bad iron," he says. " I had to focus on my rhythm a bit and slow things down. I just had to keep focusing and as I got into the round it felt more natural. I didn't have to think too much coming in."

Fleetwood says he can't ever stay up past 9pm as he gets so tired out there. He'll sleep easy tonight.

    Johnson (+3 after 16)

It is looking very much like this will be the first time since 1986 - when world rankings began - that the top three in the world missed the cut at a major.

Now that is remarkable. Erin Hills claims big names like FA Cup third round Saturday in the old days.

Dustin is the only man who can save himself.

    Holmes (-6 after 17)

Only J.B Holmes can realistically tie the lead overnight now as he strolls to the ninth tee, his last hole. The par three can be attacked at just 153 yards.

    Koepka (-7)

Brooks Koepka, this putt on his last hole will give him an overnight lead at the halfway stage. The tee shot deserves to be finished off. Around four feet or so... pulls it.

It's a four-way share as we stand. Cracking stuff this.

  10. For the record...published at 00:47 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

    Matsuyama (-5)

This then for a round of eight under, a mark which will equal a US Open record. Hideki Matsuyama lit up the front nine and has kept some momentum at least. It comes down to 12ft uphill. Dribbles it... no. He ends the day five under overall.

Right back in it. Drama coming on nine...

  11. End of the day for Rickie...published at 00:45 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

    Fowler (-6)

    Rickie FowlerImage source, EPA

Rickie Fowler puffs his cheeks out at the end of a day I guess he will file under 'frustrating'.

His birdie look on the 18th doesn't threaten and it's fair to say that round got away from him a tad. He's one off the pace but could be two if Brooks Koepka drops in his putt on his final hole.

Hideki Matsuayam to putt for birdie and a share of a US Open record next...

  12. Yardage Brook...published at 00:42 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

    Koepka (-7 after 17)

Brooks Koepka's final hole is the par-three ninth. It's 153 yards downhill and is ball lands dead in line with the flag and stops. Now that is how you judge distance. Maybe six feet for birdie and the lead overnight.

    Holmes (-6 after 16)

J.B Holmes has not won a tournament since 2015 but he has some momentum here. His long putt on his 16th hole has no right to drop, no right at all. But it does. One off the pace. There is a lot going on here.

    Good luck picking a winner.

    Fleetwood (-7)

What a finish by Tommy Fleetwood as he conquers the bug par five. His ball does a lap of the cup before dropping underground. Off comes the cap and with it the relief pours from him. A fine day and he co-leads the US Open.

    Fleetwood (-6 after 17) Matsuyama (-5 after 17)

    MatsuyamaImage source, Getty Images

Hideki Matsuyama tees up on 18, just the 676 yards this one. If he makes birdie he equals the lowest round at a US Open.

Up ahead on the same hole Tommy Fleetwood floats his approach in nicely and he's within range there. About the length of an average family car from the cup and that putt is for birdie and to tie the lead.

    Fowler (-6 after 17) Koepka (-7 after 16)

Rickie Fowler gets up and down admirably on 17. The putt of six feet was exactly what you don't want when things are going against you but he dropped it in there.

He has one hole left, Brooks Koepka has two but he's on the front nine. Tees it up on eight and lands it around 320 yards up the fairway. Kaboom.

A quick look around Erin Hills shows the line of people hunting refreshments. A beef burger will set you back between £6 and £7. A hot dog comes in cheaper oddly, I've never understood that one.

And if you wish you could sit and take in action on the range while scoffing it. That looks pretty sweet to me...
