    Els (-4 after 8)

I make this major championship number 98 for Ernie Els. He has four wins in the big tournaments of course, two at this tournament in the 1990s, around the days of glorious Brit Pop. He rolls home a vintage birdie on 17, his eighth hole of the day. Four under, five behind.

    He couldn't could he?

  2. Koepka dropspublished at 22:37 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Koepka (-8 after 10)

Brooks Koepka opens the door a little for Rickie Fowler. This 27-year-old bullets one left on the first hole and in hacking from the rough he can't hold the green. Up and down for par? Not today. You can try to take a little from Erin Hills but not this much. The course takes the shot as Koepka rolls his par putt wide from range.

Guy Dixon: This is Rickie Fowler's most important major. He now holds the tag of best player never to have won a major championship.

Daniel Johnson: Its about time Matsuyama or Fowler won big, I hope one of them can pull it out of the bag.

Key major for these guys as you both say. They are right in there with a shout and you only get so many good looks at breaking your duck. Keep in touch with us on #bbcgolf.

  5. Fowler misses birdiepublished at 22:32 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Fowler (-9 after 10)

    Jay Townsend
BBC Radio 5 live at Erin Hills

That was not a good putt from Fowler but you can't hit every one correctly.

  6. Pars for Matsuyama and Fowlerpublished at 22:32 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Fowler -9, Matsuyama -4 (10)

Hideki Matsuyama starts his back nine with a two-putt par. His birdie effort was never troubling the hole, pulling up a couple of feet short.

Rickie Fowler is taking an age to line his ball up and remove his marker. The sign of a focused man? A tentative swing though and his ball dribbles left.

  7. Koepka slip as birdies rollpublished at 22:29 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Koepka (-9 after 9) (Spieth (-1 after 7) Kaymer (-1 after 7)

    SpiethImage source, Getty Images

Jordan Spieth sets up the type of birdie putt he knocked in in his sleep on the way to majors in the past. His escape from the sand on his seventh hole is sublime. Martin Kaymer will make birdie after lagging a putt up on the same drag. These dudes have some way to go to contend though.

We see an error from Brooks Koepka on his 10th hole. He smashes one on the par-five first and his second blow is way left. Still, he has three shots from the rough to make par. Should be OK.

Back to Spieth, needs a birdie here from 10ft... in she goes. Brill.

  8. Fowler and Matsuyama set up birdie lookspublished at 22:26 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Fowler -9, Matsuyama -4 (9)

Rickie Fowler has hit seven out of nine greens in regulation today. Make that eight in 10 as he leaves himself a 15-footer for birdie and the lead.

Hideki Matsuyama is slightly longer with his approach but it stays on the same tier of the green as the flag. Double the putt length though.

  9. Just joining us?published at 22:23 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Koepka (-9 after 9) Casey (-7)

    Koepka and CaseyImage source, .

If you are just joining us, the two stories of the day are undoubtedly the start from Brooks Koepka and the super round of Paul Casey.

Koepka is four under by the turn while Casey recovered from a triple bogey to stay in contention and end one under for the day.

We have a scenario now where big names like Jordan Spieth, Martin Kaymer and Dustin Johnson are all inside the cut but a long way adrift of leaders Koepka and Rickie Fowler on nine under.

Some out there are red hot, others need to heat up somewhat. We are with you until the small hours, so stick in there. Grab some treats and of course, tweet us on #bbcgolf.

  10. Matsuyama chasing 62?published at 22:21 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

Hideki Matsuyama is out in 30. Lots of rounds of 63 in major championship golf. Nobody has hit a 62...

The Japanese smashes his drive down the 500+ yard par-four 10th. He finds the fairway, although with 80 yards between the fescue maybe that's not too big an ask.

Rickie Fowler follows suit. The co-leader is yet to drop a shot in 27 holes. Solid.

  11. Sizzling Brookspublished at 22:16 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Koepka (-9 after 9)

Some opening nine from Brooks. This guy will win a major, I wonder if he has a double or triple bogey in the locker yet though. Still a young chap after all.

All seven of his fairways hit, eight of nine greens. Rock solid.

  12. Matsuyama misses out on 29published at 22:13 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

No waving of putters by Jon Rahm on the ninth, not yet anyway. He's chipping on with his second. A little bump and run across the green to a couple of feet.

Rickie Fowler is stalking his putt. He's looked from behind, both sides and in front. A shake of the head though as the ball meanders four feet past. He rolls that in.

Here's Matsuyama with a putt to go out in 29...it's uphill and the he gives it a decent rattle but it misses on the low side. He thinks for a split second that it's in. That would have tied the US Open nine-hole scoring record.

  14. Spieth back to levelpublished at 22:08 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

Co-leader Rickie Fowler is not quite as aggressive with his wedge on nine. He doesn't need to be and his ball comes to rest on the front of the green, probably another 30-footer for birdie.

Back on six Dustin Johnson keeps himself in the hunt to make the cut with a six-foot par putt to remain on the cut mark at one over. Can Jordan Spieth follow suit to stay one under? No. He was up and out of his putt almost before his club hit the ball. Only three feet remaining but he's had a couple of looks, stepped away, gone back to the ball and finally rolled it in. Back to level

On 18, Koepka misses a makeable birdie putt for the outright lead.

  15. Magic Matsuyamapublished at 22:04 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Matsuyama -4 (8)

    Hideki MatsuyamaImage source, Getty Images

Hideki Matsuyama is the man on the charge today. He rolls in his sixth birdie putt on the eighth hole and Japan's world number four is suddenly up to four under.

He didn't have a great day on Thursday but battled to stay in with half a shout on two over and is reaping the rewards this evening.

Big birdie chance coming up on the short ninth - just 153 yards to the pin. He adjusts his yellow t-shirt, settles over the ball and pushes it a little. On the green but undulations to deal with.

  16. Pars all roundpublished at 22:01 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

Rickie Fowler's birdie putt on eight is officially measured at 31 feet. He hits it 31 feet, but crucially six inches off line. Tap-in par to stay nine under.

Jon Rahm is gesticulating again after he leaves his birdie putt short. He trudges away swinging his putter like a fencing blade, sucking on his bottom lip.

Tommy Fleetwood is out with the flatstick from the first cut off the edge of the ninth green but he's walking after it almost as soon as he hits it. He's a little further away and has a testy three-footer for par on nine.

  18. Fortunate Fleetwoodpublished at 21:55 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Fleetwood -6 (8)

On the eighth fairway, Rickie Fowler has 140 yards to the flag. Slightly uphill to the green and he pushes it slightly. On the dancefloor but 30 feet away.

Playing partner Jon Rahm goes over the flag, hoping for a bit of backspin. Not happening though.

Up on the par-three ninth and Tommy Fleetwood is aggressive with his tee shot. He gets a little lucky with his ball landing beside the hole and pulling up short of the bunker a yard off the back of the green.

  19. Johnson, Kaymer and Spieth all miss birdiespublished at 21:51 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

On the eighth tee...Rickie Fowler. Out with the big dog and he's safely on the short stuff. His ball scuttling down the fairway after catching a downslope.

Over on 17, his co-leader Koepka's lengthy birdie putt doesn't trouble the hole. Bit of work to do to stay at nine under but he confidently strokes his ball in.

Dustin Johnson doesn't hit his 30-foot birdie putt on five so he is staying at one over. Martin Kaymer from a similar spot, same result, stays level. Has Jordan Spieth learnt anything about the pace of the green? No. Pars all round.

  20. Rahm struggling to get goingpublished at 21:44 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Rahm +5 (7)

Kopeka has hit 92% of greens in regulation today, almost 10% more than his nearest rival. His radar is slightly off on the 17th. "Oh, no" he says but his ball lands on the putting surface and dribbles just off the back edge. It's not the worst of results.

Jon Rahm is waving his arms in frustration on the seventh green as he watches another birdie putt slide by. The much-fancied Spaniard is one over par today and five over for the tournament.

The cut mark is projected to come at +1 meaning he needs to pick up four shots from somewhere.
