    Lovemark (-6) Fowler (-6 after 16)

The wheels are coming off for Rickie Fowler. Seven under at the start of the day, that run of dropped shots have wobbled him big time.

He's in the thick rough on 17 and though his contact is clean, he cannot apply spin to his ball because of the long grass. His ball runs through the green and that leaves a nasty up and down. He could fall from six under.

Jamie Lovemark, a gent who seems to turn our week after week on the PGA Tour, reaches the same mark with birdie on 18. Long putt, what a way to end the day.

Brian Harman looks like Ricky Ponting in the face? Or is that just me?

Anyway, he can lead the US Open here on 17 if he puts a massive putt away... slim chance... too slim.

The lead is shared by three men as Tommy Fleetwood makes a bogey on 17. That poor chip wiped him out. A little mistake here or there and you're done.

So if you've flicked your smartphone on at this late stage, Harman, Brooks Koepka and Paul Casey share the lead.

  4. Trouble...published at 00:11 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

    Fleetwood (-7 after 16)

    Tommy FleetwoodImage source, Getty Images

Tommy Fleetwood on 17 needs an up and down to hold his mark. Uphill chip and he wants to flick this into the slope to take the sting out of it. He does that but the slope takes too much heat out of it. Tommy will now have to putt from the edge of the green or he will join Rickie Fowler back on six under. This suddenly feels like the final day at a major, lead swapping...

  5. Bogeypublished at 00:07 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

    Johnson (+2 after 13)

Dustin Johnson has a short one for par and he has little room for error now as he's on the cut line. Poor stroke, lips out and he's visibly angry.

Problems and some drama up on 17 in the hunt for the lead...

  6. The hunt!published at 00:04 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

    Fowler (-6 after 16)

Paul Casey, Brian Harman, Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood share that glory position at the top.

Rickie Fowler is six under but in the bunker on a par three. Whips the club face through it, sumptuous. Leaves a tap in and stays in it.

  7. Four share the lead...published at 00:03 British Summer Time 17 June 2017

    Koepka (-7 after 15)

Brooks Koepka cannot dig himself out of trouble on the sixth hole. That is one rag on this course which affords you no room for error. After being way left he chips into the heart of the green to leave a tester for his par but he misses and we have a four-way tie for the lead.

Nick Bruzon: Margate. Adventure golf course on the sea front. A wicked 'volcano' hole.

James: Carnoustie. My second open in 2007. It rained all weekend. Fantastic conditions for links golf. Would love to play it one day!

Simon Mill: It's not so much about the course but about who you're with. I've had the best golf at the worse course with the best friends.

Iain Carter has asked what course you would play if you could only play one for the rest of your life.

  9. Trouble and birdie!published at 23:56 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Koepka (-8 after 14) Fleetwood (-7 after 16) Harman (-7 after 16)

Let's just say Brooks Koepka muttered an expletive on the sixth tee. He is way left off this par three, the hardest hole on the course. Deep rough. Deep trouble.

We may have a new leader shortly and that could be Tommy Fleetwood. His birdie putt is on it's way from range... looks good... looks good... ooohh. Inches away.

Brian Harman joins Fleetwood on seven under par with a tap in on 16.

At last, Dustin Johnson has a birdie. A wry smile. His knees bent as he almost willed it in. The short putt downhill just about took the right side of the cup.

Jordan Spieth taps his ball in for par and they go on, chasing, chasing, chasing...

It has to be a great walk. I don't really care for the golf or how I play. If it's not a good walk, I'm not interested.

The bonus factor is if I have someone whose company I enjoy walking with me. These are the only two things that matter now.

Our leader Brooks Koepka standing firm after 14 holes. Two putts bring up a par and he maintains his lead. Tommy Fleetwood has set up a birdie look though so we could have tied leaders if he can sink one from some 15ft or so.

The lead is bunching up ladies and gents.

  15. Furious Rahm dropping awaypublished at 23:42 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Fowler -6, Matsuyama -5, Rahm +5 (14)

Jon Rahm's pitching wedge takes the full brunt of his anger. Television replays show him slam it into the rough twice as he makes a mess of the pitch. The Spaniard has left himself a 20-footer to save par. He cannot and he slips to five over. That could well be his tournament over.

After all that, Rickie Fowler has a birdie putt from seven feet. Not even close. Hideki Matsuyama is also in for par. A decent two-putt.

    Kaymer (-3 after 11)

Angela Merkel is sat at home now, fist pumping in her armchair as Martin Kaymer gets it going while Rickie Fowler splutters.

Kaymer won this tournament in 2014 of course and as a 10 footer drops for birdie, he may be looking up that leaderboard with belief.

  17. Fowler sets up birdie chancepublished at 23:35 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Rickie FowlerImage source, EPA

Rickie Fowler has just walked 100 yards from his ball up to the green. He had a little look at the contours and then turned and strolled back to his ball. Imagine doing that in your monthly medal.

I suppose there's a bit more at stake here. He hits a pin-seeker. It bites, almost spins back in and leaves him with a five-footer up the hill for birdie.

Hideki Matsuyama from thick clumpy rough, rather than the thigh-high stuff. He gives it an almighty thump but cannot advance his ball onto the green.

I wish I could speak Spanish. I'd love to know what Jon Rahm just said. He didn't look comfortable over his ball in the bunker. He had numerous practice swipes before scudding his ball across the green and into the cabbage.

    Schauffele (-5)

I am reliably informed that the man sitting tied sixth right now - Xander Schauffele - is from good sporting genes.

His great grandfather, Johann Hoffmann, played for Rapid Vienna as a striker in the 1920s.

  19. Fowler trying to stop the rotpublished at 23:32 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

Rickie Fowler, with 313 yards to go is out with a four-iron, bunting it a bit further down towards the green.

Hideki Matsuyama is 300 yards from the flag so he too tries the lay-up option. His right hand comes off the club and his ball squirts towards the rough. It's unclear if he's in the very deep stuff.

Jon Rahm needs birdies, and possibly an eagle so he takes on the green from 276 yards. No good from the Spaniard as his ball finds sand.

    Els (-2 after 10) Koepka (-8 after 13)

Ernie Els has caught this plague of bogies doing the rounds and two of them have him back at two under overall now after 10 holes.

Brooks Koepka has five holes to go and a one-shot lead. He would likely take that at the end of the day. Some 498 yards off this tee box, a par four no less. Rapid swing, great noise, straight and true. Well hit son.
