  1. Fowler retakes share of the leadpublished at 21:43 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Fowler -9, Matsuyama -3 (7)

    How about that!

Unbelievable stuff from Rickie Fowler. He didn't make it easy for himself, but rolls in a putt from 51 feet from the very fringes of the green to retake a share of the lead.

Hand in the air, a nod of appreciation. Lovely.

Hideki Matsuyama has a much easier chance for birdie. And he's not missing those today.

Rickie Fowler is chewing furiously on some gum. The nerves of competing for a US Open...?

He lofts an approach towards the rear of the seventh green and it kicks on, nestling just off the back.

Hideki Matsuyama has the making of these greens today, his effort spins back towards the flag and that gets the crowd going.

  3. Holmes almost holes off the fairwaypublished at 21:36 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Holmes -5 (6)

Brooks Koepka booms one down the par-four 17th. Just the 305 yards of carry according to the technical wizadry.

Back on the 15th JB Holmes is firing straight at the pin with his second, a couple of hops and the ball spins back holewards. It's not going to drop is it? No. Lips out. But that's back-to-back birdies for the American who climbs to five under after six holes.

  4. Spieth on the chargepublished at 21:34 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Johnson +1, Spieth -1, Kaymer E (4)

    Jordan Spieth's putter is hot.

He tucked away a cracking putt for par on the third, and follows up from a similar distance to make birdie on the fourth. His second of the day.

Dustin Johnson's not so impressed. Six feet or so from the cup and it doesn't drop for the defending champion, who is just inside the cut.

    Fowler -8, Matsuyama -2 (6)

Rickie Fowler has failed to find the fairway for the first time today - instead he's sought out a bunker lurking to the left of the par-five seventh.

Hideki Matsuyama is flying right now, and he sinks his tee shot right into the meat of the fairway.

  6. Fleetwood floatingpublished at 21:29 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Fleetwood -6 (7)

Tommy Fleetwood goes aerial with his third shot from just off the front right of the par-five seventh green. Floats it up to within 20 feet and a hop and a skip it comes to rest four-feet away. Big birdie chance to get to six under coming up and the man from Southport is not missing that.

Just one behind leading Brit Paul Casey and three off the overall lead.

From the fescue, to the sand. That's not ideal for Martin Kaymer.

It's one thing getting out of that thigh-high grass that makes up the Erin Hills rough, another doing something with it.

Dustin Johnson has a sea of bunkers to avoid in front of him, but there'll be no sandy toes for the defending champion - he's in a puttable position on the green. Birdie chance?

  8. Koepka leadspublished at 21:24 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Koepka -9 (7)

We have a new leader folks. Brooks Koepka is putting together the round of his life. The American rolls in his fourth birdie putt of the day on the 16th, his seventh hole of the day. He moves to nine under.

  9. Birdie!published at 21:22 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Fowler -8, Matsuyama -2 (6)

Rickie Fowler pitches his tee shot to the right of the green on the par-three sixth and then takes the aggressive route to the pin as he chips on.

Hideki Matsuyama doesn't need to reach for his wedge, he's got a mid-range putt for birdie and... down it goes!

That's four in his opening six holes.

Tommy Fleetwood is back in the mix. He's cancelled out that early bogey with a birdie at the fourth and then levels out on the following two.

A few holes back and Dustin Johnson is looking to save par, he rolls his third shot up the bank besides the green and watches it boomerang in trajectory as it shoots back towards the cup.

He taps in for par. As does Jordan Spieth.

  11. McIlroy has 'no concerns'published at 21:17 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    McIlroy +5

World number two Rory McIlroy says he felt improvment in making four birdies in six holes to end five over and miss the cut. McIlroy has not played too much golf this year and believes he fixed part of his swing on the range this morning.

"I hit the ball much better today," he tells Sky Sports. "It's funny when you don't have so much pressure on you you free wheel a bit. I could have birdied every hole coming in.

"It's game time, competitive rounds. I know what I'm capable of is in there somewhere, it's just a matter of producing it. I have no real concerns. I have struggled in this championship a bit. I just shot myself in the foot yesterday and gave myself too much to do."

  13. Fowler firingpublished at 21:15 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

One of the defining attributes of any US Open champion is supreme efficiency on the greens. When Fowler holed his 6 footer to move back into the outright lead he made it 17 out of 17 for holing putts inside ten feet so far this week.

It's another par for Rickie Fowler. I wonder if he knows he's now got company at the top?

The American has been a model of consistency so far at Erin Hills this week. He's yet to card a bogey.

Hideki Matsuyama follows suit - three birdies for him so far today though.

  15. Double up Westwoodpublished at 21:11 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

Lee Westwood is on his fourth hole and let's just say his par putt is about the length of two double deckers tied together. Not a bad effort and four feet to tidy up for bogey. His knees are clattering together though and he misses it. Double trouble, three shots gone on the day.

    Johnson +1, Spieth E, Kaymer -1 (2)

Dustin Johnson, sporting the deep blue jersey today, lofts his approach greenwards - has it got too much? A little, but that sticks on the slightly longer stuff.

Jordan Spieth is back in that pocket behind the green as well, but Martin Kaymer has nailed it. He's looking good.

    Fowler -8, Matsuyama -1 (4)

Even when Rickie Fowler thinks he's mishit a shot it comes up good. Firing blind towards the green he wills the ball on "go..." but it's there with plenty to spare.

Hideki Matsuyama is enjoying his Friday at Erin Hills too. Three birdies so far, and he rolls a long-range putt up to within three of four feet for what should be a par on the fifth.

  18. Tied leadpublished at 21:03 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Koepka (-8 after 5)

Rickie Fowler has company. Brooks Koepka is right on it today and he's now three under after five holes. The par-five 14th, his fifth hole of the day, is food and drink for him. The eagle putt goes close and the two footer remaining is downed.

  20. Birdie!published at 20:56 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Johnson +1, Spieth E, Kaymer -1 (2)

Jordan Spieth has his head in his hands. How did that not drop?

The 2015 winner rolls his birdie putt pin-wards and it looks on course all the way, but some how it stays up.

Dustin Johnson has a birdie chance from four feet the other side. And he can convert. That's birdie, birdie for the world number one.
