It's changing all the time at the top. Although the Shinnecock Hills door staff seem to be employing a one-in, one-out policy.

Rafa Cabrera Bello and Ted Potter make way, Francesco Molinari and Peter Uihlein join the party.

Ian Poulter and Scott Piercy in the VIP area, sharing the clubhouse lead.

  2. Triple bogey for Woodspublished at 19:05 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson E, J Thomas E, T Woods +3 (1)

Phew. Tiger Woods finally makes it on to the green. Face like thunder, though. Disappointing start for the three-time US Open winner and he's still a fair way from the cup.

The double bogey chances drifts wide, he starts with a triple.

Dustin Johnson, meanwhile, shows just why he's back to being the world number one. Superb putt from the American, curling all the way in from 11 feet for par.

Justin Thomas bobbles his in for a par of his own.

  3. Woods in troublepublished at 19:01 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson, J Thomas, T Woods (18:47 BST)

Tiger Woods' ball more reminiscent of a boomerang on the opening hole. He clips off the slightly longer grass beyond the green, catches the good stuff and then watches it dribble right back towards him.

Woods takes his putter this time, but just can't make it up the travelator. Back it comes.

Dustin Johnson makes the green from the sand, but leaves himself plenty of work to do to make par.

Justin Thomas' turn, placing his ball back in the re-raked sand, pops his bunker shot to a within a few feet of the pin.

Ian Poulter after a one-under-par opening round: "The US Open is extremely stressful. We know past US Open's when you are at the start of the week you know it will be a long hard week and today was one of those days.

"To piece together one under today was very pleasing. Today was good, but I have three tough days to come.

"You have to enjoy the challenge of a US Open and I haven't in the past. This week is about patience and staying around until Sunday."

Dustin Johnson nails his approach nearly 170 yards and it trickles into the sand.

Tiger Woods also stares longingly at his ball as it disappears into the distance and way beyond the green. That was a good couple of club-lengths too long.

Justin Thomas has had a chance to look at those, so what will he do? Stick it in the same bunker as Johnson, in almost identical fashion.

Tricky start for the marquee trio.

All three safely away. Tiger Woods perhaps just edging it on the decibels as he thwacks a tee shot down the fairway of the 407-yard first.

Sunday's victory was the 18th PGA Tour win of Dustin Johnson's career, and his first since a triumph at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii in January.

"It was nice to be back in the hunt, to get the lead and to get the juices flowing a little bit," he said.

"It feels like it's been a long time (since my last win), even though it's only been six months.

"I have high expectations going in every week. But I feel like my game's in good shape.

"I'm driving really well. I'm hitting my irons well, and my wedges are really good. I'm really looking forward to it."

No medal for guessing where most of the spectators are heading at Shinnecock Hills.

They gather at the first to watch the world number one, number two and number 80 tee off.

In others words, that Johnson-Thomas-Woods trio.

Oh, well Sergio's reign didn't last long.

The former Masters champion bogeys the second, but passes the first-placed baton on to another Spaniard.

Rafa Cabera Bello chips in for a birdie at the par-three hole and nestles into a share of top spot.

Ian Poulter and Scott Piercy of course home and hosed, with Sergio Garcia and Taiwanese amateur Chun An Yu completing the five-some at the top.

Andrew Johnston started his round with what turned out to be the sole birdie.

He added two bogeys and a double bogey over the next 17 holes which has to go down as a good start all things considering.

It's nearly time for Dustin Johnson, and he heads into the second major this year as the number one in the world again after fellow American Justin Thomas' brief stint at the top.

Johnson had lost his number one spot to Thomas last month after 64 weeks of leading the rankings.

The 2016 US Open champion won the St Jude Classic last weekend to regain pole position and gather some momentum in the build-up to Shinnecock Hills.

    Good start for Sergio Garcia.

The Spaniard storms into a share of the lead, rolling in from eight feet with confidence to birdie the first.

    P Mickelson +7, J Spieth +8, R McIlroy +10 (F)

Jordan Spieth with the chance to salvage something from his round as he shoots for birdie at the group's last... it's a cracking effort - starting wide and catching the line - but it just comes up short. Eight over for the 2015 champ.

Rory McIlroy, to break 80, can't convert from seven or so feet. Bogey, and he finishes on +10.

Now it's Leftie's turn. A similar distance, but facing down the slope for the opposite side. And that doesn't drop either!

Phil Mickelson escapes on seven over.

"Sit, sit," Rory McIlroy barks at his approach, but it doesn't obey and kicks on down the gentle slope behind the ninth green.

Jordan Spieth gives out the same orders, and finds the dancefloor, but Phil Mickelson saves the best until last with a swerving approach that spins back towards the cup.

    T Fleetwood (18:25 BST)

Tommy Fleetwood insists he will relish the "grind" of a traditional US Open as he looks to win a first major title at Shinnecock Hills.

The Englishman was fourth last year at Erin Hills and 27th on his tournament debut in 2015 at Chambers Bay.

"It's exciting for me," said Fleetwood. "I've enjoyed those two US Opens and I think it's an amazing event, but they have not been classic US Opens.

"But I enjoy a test where it's just grinding away at you all day, you never get to switch off. I do like those type of events.

"I think the good thing is that it's at a different course to last year."

Probably wasn't banking on it being this windy, mind...

Right, time for the Spanish trio of Sergio Garcia, Rafa Cabrera Bello and John Rahm.

"On the tee, from Spain..." first up, Sergio.

All three make the fairway. Cabrera Bello to the soundtrack of "mashed potatoes".

  20. Poulter takes share of clubhouse leadpublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    I Poulter -1 (F)

Ian Poulter, for the outright clubhouse lead... a tad under 16 feet.

The salmon-topped Englishman takes a deep breath, rolls it cup-wards and glares at his ball as it looks to find the line before drifting slightly right.

Poulter taps in for par from close range. A very solid opening round indeed.
