  1. Birdies for Johnson & Woodspublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -2, J Thomas +1, T Woods +3 (5)

Dustin Johnson, for birdie, from some 23 feet.

The American steadies himself, and rolls in the long-ranger. That's worth a fist pump from the world number one!

Tiger Woods has a birdie chance of his own. Kerplunk. He makes no mistake from four feet, rattling the back of the cup.

    That's better.

    D Johnson -1, J Thomas +1, T Woods +4 (4)

Back on the fifth and Tiger Woods still has 300+ yards to the green. The sensible play is to lay-up and the American does just that.

Dustin Johnson lobbed out of the bunker to leave himself 127 yards to the flag but he's not in pin-seeking mode, leaving his wedge a good 25-feet short of the hole.

Justin Thomas, meanwhile, has a mammoth birdie putt. It looks good, but stops just short.

DJ and Tiger taking a good look at that...

Sergio Garcia is rolling along nicely at +1 after six holes. But he's got a touch unlucky on the short seventh.

His tee shot lands a dozen feet from the cup but there's no bite on the ball and it wanders down a slope to the left and ends up some 60-70 feet away. From birdie chance to tough two-putt par coming up for the Spaniard.

His first finishes eight-feet short and he knocks in for par.

  4. Spieth's day not donepublished at 20:06 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    J Spieth +8

Jordan Spieth had an eight-over 78 earlier today. But his day is not done. The American, a three-time major winner and 2015 US Open champion, is out with a coach, finessing his swing.

He'll have plenty of time for practice in the morning too because he is among the later starters at 18:47 BST on Friday.

  5. Henley gets to -3published at 20:01 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    R Henley -3 (8)

Back with the marquee group and Tiger Woods marmalises his drive down the par-five fifth. Dustin Johnson has already gone and he is playing in the sand.

Justin Thomas is the last to drive and immediately shout "Fore", holding his driver out to his left. None of the spectators in the vicinity of where the ball is headed seem too bothered to move.

Meanwhile, up on the eighth and Russell Henley is having a superb front nine. Another birdie for the American who gets to three under.

  6. Lowry holes monster puttpublished at 19:58 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    S Lowry E (12*)

Ireland's Shane Lowry is punching the air on the par-four 12th (his third hole) after holing the longest putt of the day - two inches shy of 74 feet from the left edge to the hole on the right. Thought these greens were supposed to be small?

The birdie gets Lowry back to level par.

  7. Birdie for DJpublished at 19:55 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -1, J Thomas +1, T Woods +4 (4)

A beauty of a chip back from Tiger Woods, clipped off the top of the grass to tap-in par range.

Dustin Johnson sinks his first birdie of the day with a 13-footer that hits the back of the hole before dropping - an impressive start for the world's best.

But Justin Thomas leaves his effort on the green and walks off with a par.

  8. Gay joins Henley out in frontpublished at 19:55 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    B Gay -2 (9)

Fourth birdie of his opening round at the ninth hole and American Brian Gay is two under par at the turn.

There is, of course, two bogeys on his card, but it's enough for a place at the top of the leaderboard alongside compatriot Russell Henley.

  9. Woods long againpublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

Tiger Woods from 151 yards on the fourth. Ball below his feet on the edge of a bunker, fighting to keep it online. "Down, down" he implores his ball. It ignores him and he skips through the back.

Dustin Johnson shows Tiger the way and has a good look at a birdie. Justin Thomas is already on the dancefloor and now he has a partner.

  10. Henley takes the leadpublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Henley -2 (7); Dufner -1 (2)

American Jason Dufner is the latest to join the growing group on one under, the 41-year-old holing a curler from distance on the second.

But just as he does that, Russell Henley knocks in a lengthy putt on the short seventh to go to two under and take the outright lead on his own.

  11. Bogey for Thomaspublished at 19:40 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson E, J Thomas E, T Woods +4 (3)

Justin Thomas, having taken an extra stroke to make the green after a wayward tee shot, can only scramble back for bogey at the third.

Dustin Johnson continues his solid start with a well-made par, and Tiger Woods will be glad to stop the rot as he also makes a first par of the tournament.

Bold choice of trousers from Justin Thomas. Blue with little green flecks on. You can pull those off when you're world number one, but world number two...?

Talking of the world number one, Dustin Johnson delicately coaxes a chip from the fringes and homes in on the pin to leave a steady par putt.

    Thomas goes even closer.

  13. Postpublished at 19:31 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson E, J Thomas E, T Woods +4 (2)

Dustin Johnson slightly over eggs his approach at three. It kicks on to the fringes.

Tiger Woods tosses a strand of grass into the air to assess the wind. 177 yards to the pin. He lines up, but backs out and reaches for some more grass.

    That pesky wind.

It looks left, but finds the good stuff and runs on to the back of the green.

  14. 'You are going to make bogeys around here'published at 19:30 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    R Knox +3 (F)

Scotland's Russell Knox after a three-over-par opening round: "It is hard. It is probably not the hardest I have seen, but it is up there.

"The course is a beast with no wind. The greens are also insane.

"I hit a couple of bad tee shots when I was happy to make bogeys.

"Four birdies was big to offset the bogeys, you are going to make bogeys around here."

Cracking tee shot from Tiger Woods at the third, sending his drive into the heart of the fairway and watching it kick on plenty before settling over to the right.

He's got a good sight of the green.

  16. Uihlein takes outright leadpublished at 19:21 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    P Uihlein -2 (5)

    WE HAVE AN OUTRIGHT LEADER!

Can't remember the last time that was the case... and it's Peter Uihlein, easy for you to say.

The American backs up his birdie at the fourth with another at the par-five fifth.

It fires him to top spot.

  18. Bogey for Woodspublished at 19:19 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson E, J Thomas E, T Woods +4 (2)

Oh dear. Horrendous start to the 2018 US Open for Tiger Woods.

The 42-year-old stares down the barrel from close range only to roll his par putt wide.

Dustin Johnson sinks his from a touch closer, as does Justin Thomas.

  19. Postpublished at 19:16 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

Justin Thomas is in the sand again at two, but again dinks out smartly to within a putter's reach of the flag.

Dustin Johnson shows off his softer side with a wonderful clip from the fringes that tickles its way up towards the pin.

Tiger takes his putter to the the slightly longer cut, and gets a similar result.

  20. Eagle for Henleypublished at 19:14 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    R Henley -1 (5)

    How about that!

Russell Henley nails an eagle from 26 feet at the fifth to also join the leading pack.

    Inch perfect.
