  2. Birdie for Henleypublished at 21:13 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    R Henley -2 (12), J Dufner -1 (7)

Dustin Johnson's got company at the top...

It's an all-American tie for the lead as Russell Henley gets over that double bogey at 10 with a birdie at the 12th.

Jason Dufner is flying too. Three birdies through his opening six holes, having dropped a shot at the fourth...

...and, of course, as I'm typing he bogeys the seventh to drop out of the lead.

Tiger Woods leathers another tee shot. No questioning he's got the distance today, and it kicks on up the fairway.

Justin Thomas follows his with a longing stare, but that's also good. Dustin Johnson also gives himself a good lie and a good look at the flag.

  4. Johnson birdies from bunkerpublished at 21:05 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -2, J Thomas +1, T Woods +3 (8)

    Hang about!

In the sand one minute, in the cup the next.

Fantastic from Dustin Johnson. The world number one holes out from the bunker, straight down the hole - in basketball they'd call it a "swish".

Tiger Woods with a birdie chance of his own. Sink this and that 'mare of a start will seem a world away... nope, it stays up. Par.

Justin Thomas also could make birdie here. But it's all head shakes and hand swinging from the American. Just the par.

  5. DJ in the sandpublished at 21:00 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -1, J Thomas +1, T Woods +3 (7)

Glorious sunshine at Shinnecock Hills, and glorious approach from Justin Thomas - 115 yards out, nestling it up for a birdie chance at the eighth.

Tiger Woods follows suit with a well-placed approach of his own. Maybe 10 feet from the flag?

Dustin Johnson takes a club less, catches the wind and watches his ball disappear into a greenside bunker like someone opened a trapdoor beneath it.

    S Garcia +1 (9)

    Sergio Garcia hits the turn.

The Spaniard enjoyed the perfect start, but followed a birdie at the first with successive bogeys.

He pulled back to level at the eighth, but then dropped another shot at the ninth.

Quick maths? It leaves the former Masters champ one over...

Whoops and applause as Tiger Woods get the marquee group under way on the eighth. Slinging a drive down the middle.

More muttering and musing as Justin Thomas follows the left flank, while Dustin Johnson's hammer down the heart of the fairway brings more ecstatic ranting and raving from the following crowd.

Justin Thomas rattles home his uphill putt. DJ also tidies his up in par.

Just the three-time US Open winner to go. And Woods completes the par party.

Tiger Woods... taking a seven iron from the fringes and watching it scuttle up to within a putter's length of the pin.

Justin Thomas went right from the tee, and overshoots his approach. Dustin Johnson, meanwhile, lines up like he's facing back towards the pin - he putts up the hill, but it breaks far too early and leaves plenty of work to do.

Currently a seven-way tie for the lead. Piercy and Poulter back home. DJ, Russell Henley, Si Woo Kim, Jason Dufner and Brian Stuard completing the group on one under.

Tiger Woods strolls away from his tee shot looking less than impressed, but it just dug in enough to stick on the green at the par-three seventh instead of disappearing into the sand.

Dustin Johnson nonchalantly saunters his up on to the dancefloor. Justin Thomas goes slightly right.

  12. Bogey or double for Henley on 10?published at 20:40 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

A little bit of confusion surrounding our leader Russell Henley on the 10th. The television pictures are suggesting he's double-bogeyed the par-four hole. The official leaderboard is saying it was just a bogey.

So, he's now either the outright leader on -2 or in a share for the lead at -1 - we'll clear it up as soon as we can...

...and it turns out the USGA leaderboard was wrong. He has dropped two shots and is back to one under. Phew.

  14. Bogey for Johnsonpublished at 20:38 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -1, J Thomas +1, T Woods +3 (6)

Back-to-back birdie chance for Tiger Woods. It breaks left just a little too early and instead he makes par.

Dustin Johnson with a similar distance to make par after his little foray into the rough. Ahh, he's not quite hit it either. It pulls up just short.

Justin Thomas and his speckled trousers is the last to play, but he can't find the target either. Par for the American.

Absolute zinger from Justin Thomas. Like a homing missile in towards the pin from 175 yards and it gives the world number two a birdie chance.

Anything you can do... Tiger Woods nestles a sweetly struck approach 18 feet from the cup.

  16. Silence is goldenpublished at 20:31 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

We were hoping to hear from Rory McIlroy after his 10-over-par 80, but we are hearing reports the world number six, Jordan Spieth (78) and Phil Mickelson (77) have all refused to speak to the media.

    Poor showing chaps.

DJ gets a drop... and then takes a second. That lie is looking a little more favourable after the media procession trampled all over the fescue and flattened it out a tad.

He doesn't like it, though. The world number one just pitches on to the fairway. Playing it safe.

  18. Johnson loses his ballpublished at 20:27 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -2, J Thomas +1, T Woods +3 (5)

The search is on for Dustin Johnson's tee shot. It's buried somewhere in the long grass - there are spectators, camera men and media all after it.

"I stepped on it..." says Sky Sports on-course commentator and former player Rich Beem. Time to bring in the rules official.

DJ is keen to ensure they know it was most definitely not him that stepped on it.

  19. Postpublished at 20:22 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    D Johnson -2, J Thomas +1, T Woods +3 (5)

Dustin Johnson pulls his tee shot at the sixth left. Tiger Woods approaches his, backs off again and then cracks it down the fairway.

Justin Thomas also hugs the left, clips the slightly longer cut and the thicker grass knocks his ball back into play like a bowling alley with the bumpers up.

  20. Postpublished at 20:20 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

So that leaves Russell Henley on top of the leaderboard at three under through nine, closely followed by DJ (5) and Brian Gay (10) at two under.
