  1. Rose & Simpson on the green safelypublished at 11:39 British Summer Time 30 September 2018

    Rose v Simpson

Justin Rose's second shot on the first, the water lurking alluringly in front of the green.

The Englishmen resists it's siren call he is up to within 30 foot for the birdie.

Now Webb Simpson's turn. He retreats from his initial shot, apparently spooked by some European cheers elsewhere. The wind is whipping up as well. How is that wait going to tighten up the arm muscles?

    Not a bit.

He lands the other side of the flag from Rose, but a similar distance away. Anyone's hole.

  2. McIlroy and Thomas miss green on threepublished at 11:37 British Summer Time 30 September 2018

On the third, Justin Thomas whips his second towards the green but is in the bunker again. Rory's effort slides left and is off the green too.

Brilliant from Justin Rose on the first tee box as he went through his warm up routine in slow motion, teasing the crowd who cheered every swing.

He very much enjoys the Ryder Cup arena.

  4. Le Golf National serves up a treatpublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 30 September 2018

Can we all agree that this Le Golf National course is absolutely magnificent?

Golf is so much better with water involved.

  5. 'Signs of life from US'published at 11:35 British Summer Time 30 September 2018

    Tom Lehman
Former US Ryder Cup captain on BBC Radio 5 live

I think there is a sign of life with some of the US players, there is a real fighting spirit within the US team. They all know what they need to do today; you don’t need to tell them.

I see the European team loaded well in the front and in the back, so there is really no let up for the US team.

I think Europe wins, but by a little, with the US having a good day.

  6. 'The green is kidney-shaped'published at 11:33 British Summer Time 30 September 2018

    Hole 3 - par five, 558 yards

    Jamie Donaldson
Ryder Cup 2014 winner for BBC Radio 5 live

Onto the par-five third for Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas, with match all-square. This is what they are up against.

Anything down the right is a) going in the water, and b) blocking out the second shot. If you can hit your tee shot down the left-hand side of the fairway you have a better line and a safer shot into the green.

The green is kidney-shaped, short on the left and deeper on the right - any shot in there with a three iron to five wood wants to be down the left.

There is a bunker lurking on the right and a tree on the left. Anything to the right, finishing middle of the green, would be perfect. But it's hard to get close to a back-right flag.

  7. 'I saw a lot of belief in their eyes'published at 11:33 British Summer Time 30 September 2018

    Jim FurykImage source, Reuters

US captain Jim Furyk speaking to Sky Sports:

"The atmosphere keeps growing every Ryder Cup and the fans here have been amazing. The players love playing in it.

"We do have a tough job ahead but four points has been done before. We had a meeting last night with the players about what we needed to do and I saw a lot of belief in their eyes.

"They really believe they can come out here and turn the tide. You can talk about front-loading but we have 12 important matches. We need at least 8 points so we’ve put it out the best way we saw fit."

  8. Rose & Simpson up and runningpublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 30 September 2018

    Rose v Simpson

'Let's go Justin', clap, clap, clap go the European fans. Acknowledged with a single raised finger by the man himself.

    Webb Simpson's honour.

The American thumps it safe and central out towards where there fairway is pinched by the water down the left.

Now, Rose. And an almost identical shot. He is seven or eight yards back from Simpson's opener.

  10. Casey in the water as US go aheadpublished at 11:29 British Summer Time 30 September 2018

    Casey v Koepka 1UP (1)

Back on the first and Brooks Koepka has his eye in already. He finds the green, maybe 15 feet away for a birdie chance.

Paul Casey is still a little rusty, as he's in the bunker towards the right of the green and his ball is plugged. Not good, but it gets worse.

He chips out and the ball goes over the green and into the water. Looks like he's going a hole down. That's confirmed when Koepka putts to within a foot.

    US ahead.

Nicola: It's Sunday and that means it's Ryder Cup Singles. Come on Europe get out there and bring it home.

Paulo: 3 wins. Paul Casey, Justin Rose, Francesco Molinari. 3 halves. Sergio Garcia, Tommy Fleetwood, Rory McIlroy. Molinari point will be the winning moment.

    Rose v Simpson (11:29 BST)

    Justin RoseImage source, Getty Images

Next up on the first tee is Justin Rose.

Remember the 17-year-old amateur who finished fourth at the 1998 Open?

He is the elder statesman of European golf now, still cucumber-cool and assured.

His opponent? Webb Simpson, who is one from two in this Ryder Cup. He skied his tee shot when he played the first ball of the 2014 Ryder Cup. Any chance of a repeat with the final-day nerves jangling?

  13. Rory back to all-squarepublished at 11:26 British Summer Time 30 September 2018

    McIlroy A/S Thomas (2)

Justin Thomas chips out of the bunker on the second, and it's a decent recovery but the ball rolls perhaps 10 feet past.

Rory cannot find the hole from 18 feet, but it's within a foot. That's conceded.

Thomas made to putt back up the hill and he misses. Rory recovers.

    Back to all-square.

  14. 'We've got a job to do'published at 11:23 British Summer Time 30 September 2018

European captain Thomas Bjorn speaking to Sky Sports:

"This whole week has been an unbelievable experience. And people had been saying about playing in France, but just look at it, for these players to experience this is so special, for all 24 of them.

"Right now we’ve got a job to do but to take it all in will take a while for it to settle."

On the singles order: "You got to go with what you think. I was pretty set with who I wanted where. The singles are so different from the pairings now they go out and you have to trust them to do what they do every week.

It's all about personalities, some were raring to go, some were very calm and could wait two weeks to play. For me it was a lot about personality, I knew Jim Furyk would have to go that way with the position they are in.

    Final message to the players?

"This is not done, we’ve seen it so many times before. [I've told the players] focus on what’s in front of you and your individual games but this is what they do week in and week out."

  15. 'It's easy to go long'published at 11:22 British Summer Time 30 September 2018

    Jamie Donaldson

The second is a downhill par-three, it's a difficult hole and easy to go long.

If you go short you are in the water. You want to be left of the pin, even though the green sits right to left on a diagonal away from the tee shot, but anything left of the flag is bringing the water into play.

  16. Rory finds the green on twopublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 30 September 2018

    1UP McIlroy v Thomas (1)

Onto the par-three second and Justin Thomas finds the green-side bunker.

Rory drills his shot to the middle of the green, maybe 18 feet away. Can he claw that hole back immediately?

  17. BBC Two highlights this eveningpublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 30 September 2018

    BBC Two

You can tune into Radio 5 live throughout the day via your digital radio, this page, various smartphone apps, your fancy new telly, really there is no excuse.

And, however it turns out, there will be two-hours worth of highlights on BBC Two at 19:30 BST this evening.

Fancy doing the Likely Lads thing of avoiding the result until then? Good luck with that.

  18. Casey wincing at McIlroy misspublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 30 September 2018

    Alex Bysouth
BBC Sport at Le Golf National

Not the start the home fans were hoping. There was a groan and a wince, and that was just from Paul Casey as he checked out how his team-mate was getting on up ahead on the big screen by the first tee.

A small pocket of American fans kitted out in US ice hockey shirts cheered the McIlroy putt wide - and were quickly shushed.

  19. Second match under waypublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 30 September 2018

    Casey v Koepka

On the tee now for the second match. Paul Casey versus Brooks Koepka. The American, who has one point from three matches, will go first.

The US Open and US PGA champion is safely down the fairway.

Casey, who has one point from two so far on his first Ryder Cup for 10 years, keeps his shot on the straight and narrow too.
