  1. Don't hit too big on the fifth!published at 09:17 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at Royal Portrush

There’s always a lengthy wait for groups teeing off from the fifth - mainly because most players decide to drive straight for the green that teeters on the cliff top and they need the group in front to clear.

Tommy Fleetwood had an age to go through his practice swing and eventually stuck his attempt right on the fringes. That’ll do nicely. He celebrates by wolfing down a banana on his way down.

This is where you’ll end up if you overhit that tee shot, mind...

So Tommy Fleetwood and Erik Van Rooyen have some eye-catching clobber on. We want your own examples sent to #bbcgolf.

Thanks for this Ronan. That's some colour on show.

  3. Eagle putt missedpublished at 09:17 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Van Rooyen -4 (7)

Erik van Rooyen has about the width of a snooker table to move into a share of the lead...

...no! That was straight left off the bat. An awful putt. But a birdie and he's three under for his round.

  4. Oosthuizen drives par-four fifthpublished at 09:15 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Koepka -3, Oosthuizen -1 (4)

Brooks Koepka is out with the driver on the driveable 385-yard par-four fifth. Danger long remember. Two yards over the back and you are in the Atlantic Ocean.

He takes a little off it and his ball hits a mound in the fairway which halts it short of the green.

Louis Oosthuizen is a little braver and is rewarded with a green-seeker. It'll be a 50+-foot eagle putt, but an eagle putt nonetheless.

    And speaking of eagle putts...

  5. Van Rooyen chasing eaglepublished at 09:11 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Van Rooyen -3 (7)

Back on the seventh, one of two new holes on the Royal Portrush Dunluce Links course, Erik van Rooyen's remarkable morning continues.

The South African is wearing a pair of strides that would probably have you lobbed off some of the stuffier courses in the country but his golf is immaculate.

A booming drive down the par-five is followed by a drilled fairway wood that trips up onto the green. A decent eagle chance coming up.

  6. Lehman's lovely links shotpublished at 09:09 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Lehman +11 (10)

Tom Lehman, the 1996 Open champion, hit the first shot of today's second round. The 60-year-old is playing in his 24th and final Open Championship.

It looks like he won't be making the weekend, given he is +12 and on the 10th fairway. "Oh come on," he shouts after his ball after a wayward wedge to the green. But, a hop and a skip and kindly bounce or two sees his ball come round off the right and settle a foot from the hole.

Oh come on Tom, we all know you meant that. Lovely links shot.

He's four over for the day.

  7. Closing in!published at 09:07 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Hatton -4 (5)

Well done Tyrrell Hatton, a fine birdie on five, converting from 15ft. He stands hands in pockets, looking pleased with himself and one of The Open lead.

  8. Bogey for Brookspublished at 09:04 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Koepka -3, Oosthuizen -1 (4)

Brooks Koepka can't take advantage of his good fortune at missing the fairway bunker on the fourth, his second shot pulling up short of the green, which has the narrowest of entrances.

The world number one has left himself with a horrible chip up and over a wee hummock separating his ball from the green. He clips it nicely enough but the ball comes to rest a dozen feet from the hole. Testing par putt coming up.

Too testing. Starts it left, stays left. Bogey.

Louis Oosthuizen is on the green in two, two putts and a fourth successive par.

  9. Postpublished at 08:59 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at Royal Portrush

One of the best things about following groups along the third hole at Portrush is the media point is just below and left of the tee box.

It means you can hear the players’ tee shots whistling over head as they skip through the fresh morning air en route to the green - and for the fans in the stand up ahead, they get a sighter of the ball all the way up.

  11. Tiger huntingpublished at 08:56 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Woods +7 (10:10 BST)

Here comes Tiger Woods, shuffling into view. The 43-year-old heads out at 10:10 this morning and is heading to the range. He looks like he needs a pick-me-up. The eyelids look heavy and he's well wrapped up.

The weather is currently dry and there's barely a breath of wind but the forecast is suggesting rain is heading in around 11ish...just what Woods needs.

  12. Koepka pars three and flirts with bunkerpublished at 08:53 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Koepka -4, Oosthuizen -1 (3)

What was I saying about Brooks Koepka? He plays a delightful wedge shot to within three feet and knocks in the par.

Louis Oosthuizen takes a regulation par to stay one under.

Off they trot to the fourth tee. Koepka off first and his ball flirts with a fairway bunker. His caddie Ricky Elliott, a Portrush native, can't believe his man has stayed out of the sand. Neither can Oosthuizen.

The South African goes wide right off the tee. Keep an eye on that as it plunges into the rough.

How much to rent this gaff for the week? I’ve followed a few groups through here and each time one passes along the fourth fairway the residents come out for a watch - not a bad spot. Front-row tickets.

  14. Birdie for Van Rooyenpublished at 08:48 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Hatton -3 (4), Van Rooyen -3 (5)

England's Tyrrell Hatton is making a steady start to his second round. A decent par saver from a dozen feet on the fourth keeps him at three under.

The driveable par-four fifth coming up for Hatton.

South Africa's Erik van Rooyen, playing in the group ahead, has just pinged his driver within a couple of feet of the dancefloor and two putts gets him moving up to three under.

  15. Koepka in the roughpublished at 08:44 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Koepka -4 (2)

Hello! What's this? A rare mistake from Brooks Koepka. The world number one is human.

His iron on the par-three third hits the putting surface but the ball doesn't bite enough and trundles off down into a hollow back left, eventually being halted by the rough. Should be a relatively straightforward up and down but it'll depend on the lie.

Belgium's Thomas Pieters rolls in a lengthy birdie putt on the par-four fourth. I thought it was Tommy Fleetwood at first glance. Are they wearing the same black and white shirt? Surely not.

  16. Birdies go beggingpublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Spieth -1 (1), Fleetwood -3 (3)

Back to the first green. Jordan Spieth has found the middle of the green with his second. Decent birdie chance this. But nothing doing for the American who touches in a tiddler for par.

Tommy Fleetwood also takes two with the putter up ahead on the third green to stay three under.

  17. Birdie for Koepkapublished at 08:37 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Koepka -4, Oosthuizen -1 (2)

Up on the second green and there are eagle chances for Louis Oosthuizen and Brooks Koepka.

The South African is up first but he's not hit that and the ball pulls up a good 10 feet short. What can Koepka do?

Much better pace but a couple of inches off target. A tap-in birdie and the American is one off the lead.

Can King Louis follow him in? It's right to left. He sets it off dead centre and the ball dribbles left at the last. Par.

  19. Spieth under waypublished at 08:31 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Spieth -1

American Jordan Spieth, the Champion Golfer of 2017 started quickly on Thursday with three birdies in his first five holes.

He gave all three back by the 11th and ended the day one under par.

He's away from the first with a fairway splitter.

“Get in. C’mon Tommy lad,” remarks one punter around the outside of the second green.

A start as lively as his shirt for the Southport slinger.
