    Fleetwood -3 (2)

Tommy Fleetwood just took his black jumper off to reveal this. All I'll say is whooooaaaa.

It is doing the job as he makes birdie on two, punishing the par five while thrilling the masses with his threads.

Look good, feel good, swing good.

Michael Allen: Tommy Fleetwood’s wearing a black cap and white pants?! Hell of an image. Not wearing any trousers today?

Michael my friend, pants mean many things in many different places. Where I live, your trousers are your pants. Have a look at the 'pants' Erik Van Rooyen has on in our entry at 08:16 BST. Would they qualify as trousers? I'm not sure they even qualify as pants.

    Thanks for the contact!

There’s a nice crowd bubbling here early doors. Not quite Darren Clarke levels of excitement yesterday, but a healthy following for this morning’s starters.

Most stuck around the first green after Tommy Fleetwood passed through to follow world number one Brooks Koepka, all hustling and bustling for position.

    Koepka -3 (1)

Brooks Koepka with a sumptuous putt for birdie on one - a full 30ft with break and it lips out. It'll be par only. He'll fancy a birdie on two given it tends to give them up and he finds the fairway on the par five.

Yesterday, Ryan Fox shot the lowest total for a back nine in Open history - 29.

Today, he's just missed a par putt from a yard on the third.

As our opening entry said today... this game gives. This game takes away.

    Van Rooyen -2 (3) Thomas +1 (1) Hatton -3 (2)

Erik Van Rooyen from South Africa finished eighth at the US PGA this year, so we know he likes a major.

He rolls home a lovely putt on three - all of 25ft - for birdie. In the mix.

Elsewhere, Justin Thomas finds sand on two to make it two bunkers in two holes.

The second is the easiest hole on the course, so he can dig himself out.

Up on the second green England's Tyrell Hatton makes par on what is a birdie hole. Pays for a poor chip which left too much to do.

If you've just tuned in we've been running over all that happened on day one, including Rory McIlroy's struggles.

    Fleetwood -2 (1) Thomas +1 (1), Olesen E (1)

Oh dear, Tommy Fleetwood chips poorly and leaves 30ft or so for par. Nice putt but not enough legs. Bogey. I did write a few moments ago that he was bogey-free. Sorry Tommy.

And Justin Thomas pays for his aforementioned outfit, making bogey himself after finding the bunker. Thorbjorn Olesen makes par. That looks spectacular compared to what his playing partners have done there. Ouch.

    Again, sorry Tommy mate.

  10. Brooks tees it uppublished at 08:04 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Koepka -3, Oosthuizen -1

Brooks Koepka is walking down the steps on to the first tee. He's texting I think, or maybe he's updating his My Space.

Interestingly Tiger Woods said Brooks ignored his request for a practice round but Brooks has now cleared up he never got the text. Apparently the major-loving youngster changed his mobile number after the US Open and didn't tell Tiger.

I mean how do you not tell Tiger? He runs this game.

Anyway, Koepka has a nice blue cap on and sports some designer stubble. The tee shot goes left, rough.

Louis Oosthuizen - winner in 2010 - is on the fairway.

    Fleetwood -3, Olesen +1, Thomas E

You see I was always told blue and green don't really work as a combo. Justin Thomas has found rough and now the bunker on one. I blame the outfit.

Thorbjorn Olesen is through the green, Tommy Fleetwood hacks out of rough and sits nicely to the right of the green. That was a solid recovery.

Maybe Tommy Fleetwood was watching McIlroy open up yesterday - he almost takes the ‘Rory Line’.

That’s a long, cold path to snowmen and big digits...

  13. Bogey free?published at 07:57 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Fleetwood -3

Did you know, Tommy Fleetwood is one of only four players who was bogey free on day one.

The lucky list reads: Kiradech Aphibarnrat (68), Tony Finau (68), Tommy Fleetwood (68), Shubhankar Sharma (70).

He has work to do on one after that poor tee shot.

  14. Fleetwood tees off...published at 07:55 British Summer Time 19 July 2019

    Fleetwood -3, Olesen +1, Thomas E

"This is game number eight. On the tee, from the USA, Justin Thomas."

I like this dude. A major winner of course. I'll forgive him the navy pants and green jumper combo today. He sends his tee shot into the rough.

Tommy Fleetwood now, black jumper, black cap, white pants. Solid look, maybe not the pants. Nice clip noise, poor line. A hook left and he JUST stays in bounds.

Finally Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen. He takes an iron, he looks dapper - blue shirt, white cap - and he hits the middle of the fairway. Look good, feel good, swing good.

What did I say earlier? Byeong Hun An has some game.

He starts par-birdie-par-birdie. His latest tweet tweet comes with a snaking put which travels some 20ft and breaks left to right... straight in.

Back to level par. Two under for the day.

"This is game number seven. On the tee from England Tyrell Hatton."

Here he goes, he finished fifth in 2016 remember so he knows the time of day on the links.

Iron off the tee, lovely sweet sound, fairway. Played Tyrell old boy, played.

What’s that they say? Red sky at night...

This was the scene as we left Royal Portrush last night and so far this morning the saying feels true.

Tommy Fleetwood and co might look to be heading out into the best of the weather, but don’t fooled.

I’m no Carole Kirkwood but expect an unpredictable day of sunshine, showers, wind and rain again.

The course could quickly end up looking more like this again...
