16:46 BST 24 September 20212UP Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hovland (15)
Paul Casey splits the fairway with his drive at the par-four 15th, leaving Viktor Hovland with 181 yards.
The 24-year-old, who's been impressive today on debut, flies his approach straight over the top of the flag to 12 feet. Solid.
The Americans can only manage a par, so it's a big chance for Casey to halve the deficit with three holes remaining, but it trundles past on the right.
Another opportunity goes begging for the European pair.

A birdie putt from Justin Thomas keeps the lights on in this match for the US.
Sergio Garcia, so close to switching them off with a much longer putt moments earlier.

That's more like it from Westwood, as he strokes him a tester from the dreaded four feet range to keep in this contest and keep the lead down to just 2UP for the Americans.

Possibly. The pressure is on Ian Poulter, who drains an eight footer to halve the 12th.
He'd have missed that earlier. Xander Schauffele, who zipped his tee shot into three feet can't believe it. Game on.

The Europeans are just three down and have some momentum.

Viktor Hovland has a 33-footer for birdie on the par-four 14th. He snakes it down the slope but it just creeps by on the left.
Superb effort from the rookie, but now it's a chance for Dustin Johnson to win the hole and propel the Americans into a three-hole lead with four to go.
It's a fast left-to-right attempt from 17 feet. Johnson likes it, but it dives across the hole and stays above ground!
That would have been a crucial blow to Europe's hopes. They still have a lot to do to salvage half a point, though.

Golf commentator on BBC Radio 5 LiveThere was real pressure on Sergio Garcia.
It was a magnificent putt and you could hear what the crowd thought of that. He blows them a kiss after sinking a 25-footer.
All that the Europeans need on the 16th is to halve to post the first point.

Classic matchplay alert!
Well I never, Westwood has done well just to find the ball, he's done even better to hack it out of the trouble and find the green.
I said Fitzpatrick owed him one and his repayment is to drain the putt and force Berger to see home the birdie putt to win the hole.
But he misses! It catches the right edge and does the horror lip-out to the left. One of those matchplay moments we all love when the USA had the hole 99.9% won but ended up walking off with a half.
Still 2UP mind...

Well what a turn up for the books....
There's a sense of disbelief as Sergio Garcia drains a long birdie putt and Justin Thomas follows by missing from eight feet.
A hole that was looking so good for the American pair sees them drop further back.

BBC Sport at Whistling StraitsOne school of thought was a high wind whipping in off Lake Michigan would favour the Europeans.
Well, there wasn't much of it on the front nine earlier. The benign conditions - with a warm morning sun keeping things mild - played into the US team's hands.
According to the forecast, the winds are set to increase a little this afternoon. So that could make things interesting.
When we had a walk around the back half earlier this week, it was particularly gusty on the higher part of the course.
Felt like a spring walk at Bempton Cliffs in North Yorkshire. Although that has a different type of birdies...

They are applying pressure on the world's best player and Jon Rahm's second shot hit the brake.

16:24 BST 24 September 2021Lots of red on the leaderboard at present. Very much seems to be panning out as the world rankings suggested it might. Then again Europe have not won an opening session since 2006.
The hosts boast an average world ranking of 8.9 while Europe's average is 30.8.

16:22 BST 24 September 20212UP Koepka & Berger v Westwood & Fitzpatrick (12)
Matt Fitzpatrick, from the 13th fairway, with an iron in hand, you'd bet your life on him finding the dancefloor, but he's closer to Lake Michigan as he fires it miles wide and down into some nasty fescue/hazard area.
It's worse then position Z for the European duo and although you never say sorry in foursomes golf, Fitz owes Westwood one after that.
Koepka has no mercy as you'd expert, and looks like he's shelling peas as he leisurely lands his effort on the green easy as you like.
Trouble, big trouble for the Europeans.

No signs that Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas are giving this up just yet.
Spieth rattles an iron in to 10 feet from the cup with Jon Rahm playing next out of a small crater in the centre of the fairway.
The Spaniard plays a lovely shot considering the lie but it's well outside the American ball.

Paul Casey leaves Viktor Hovland in the rough off the right side of the 13th, but they still manage to scramble a par!
Hovland pours his 13-footer straight into the cup and it means Dustin Johnson must respond with a par for the hosts.
Wow! He's missed it. How have the Europeans won that one?! It looked like they were going to go four down, but now there's only two in it.
Another typical matchplay situation. This one's far from over.

16:16 BST 24 September 20212UP Koepka & Berger v Westwood & Fitzpatrick (12)
I've given Lee Westwood plenty over his putting down the years, but that wasn't a bad effort at all from the edge of the 12th green after a sweetly struck tee shot from Fitzpatrick on the par three.
Westwood lines it up, the waves lapping up on the shores of Lake Michigan directly behind him, but it just burns the left edge.
It thought about it for a split second, but the ball stays up and the Americans stay 2UP.
