    Koepka & Berger A/S Garcia & Rahm (11)

Good effort from Sergio Garcia. But no cigar.

The Spaniard's ball drifts left at the last moment but at least he gave that 20-foot putt a chance.

Can Daniel Berger give the home fans something to cheer. No. He's missed to huge groans from the gallery.

A foregone conclusion has become a gripping encounter.

  2. US win hole with parpublished at 15:42 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    Thomas & Spieth v Hovland & Wiesberger 1UP (9)

Bit of a scruffy end to this ninth hole from both sides.

Justin Thomas bumps his chip to six feet. Bernd Wiesberger chunks his five feet short.

Jordan Spieth holes. Viktor Hovland doesn't.

Thomas marches off to the 10th pointing to the fans and applauding. that's two holes won in three holes, the momentum is with the US but Europe have their noses in front.

    Koepka & Berger A/S Garcia & Rahm (10)

Sergio Garcia larrups a fine tee shot down the 11th as Daniel Berger's heads off right and comes to a rest a foot or two from the sand.

But Brooks Koepka turns things around with a sublime iron shot to five or six feet from the pin.

Jon Rahm lofts a nice angled approach in trying to follow suit but that's overcooked slightly and Garcia will be putting from 15-20 feet on first look.

    Thomas & Spieth v Hovland & Wiesberger 2UP (8)

Justin Thomas' tee shot evaded the bunker but could be in a worse spot. In thick rough. Jordan Spieth with the second in this alternate shot format, of course.

Spieth, hampered by a tree in front of him, has to try and carve one around and down the slope to the green. He can't get enough on that and the ball pulls up 20 yards short.

Viktor Hovland from the prime spot on the fairway. A 4/10 shot though with a wedge in hand. The ball is pin-high, but 20 feet right and nestled up against the collar of the rough. I'd be unhappy with that.

  5. Birdie game changerpublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    Cantlay & Schauffele A/S Westwood & Fitzpatrick (7)

Big moment for the United States - upper cut in triumph from Xander Schauffele and low-five with Patrick Cantlay. That birdie could be a game changer...

And it is - Europe cannot match it from 25 feet out... their advantage is snuffed out.

    We are back at all-square.

  6. Thomas wayward on ninepublished at 15:32 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    Thomas & Spieth v Hovland & Wiesberger 2UP (8)

Justin Thomas slams his driver down on the ninth tee after leaking his shot out right and into a bunker. The hole is called 'Down and Dirty' and that was one filthy shot.

Bernd Wiesberger immediately looks behind him into the fans after splitting the fairway with his drive. I'm not sure if anything was said on his backswing there.

But Iain Carter is reporting on the radio that a fan shouted out during a Lee Westwood shot a few moments ago. Vice-captain Martin Kaymer was not happy either.

    4UP Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hatton (9)

Paul Casey with a 15 feet putt on the ninth, it trundles up pin high but straightens up with the 44-year-old seemingly expecting it to turn left.

No further damage done, as Collin Morikawa fails to knock a 12-footer up the hill in.

Not like they haven't got enough holes to play with mind.

What a putt form Brooks Koepka!

    What a match this is!

    Koepka & Berger A/S Garcia & Rahm (10)

Great drive from Jon Rahm on the 10th to open the green up for Sergio Garcia.

What can he conjure up here? Oh that is delightful, loads of check and spin applied there by Garcia whose ball is two feet or so from the pin.

Daniel Berger, who is left from Brooks Koepka's drive, flips a chip up to 12-15 feet from the hole.

Three holes down after three. Could the Europeans now edge ahead?

Nope Koepka sinks a gusty putt. What a brilliant way to halve the hole.

    Thomas & Spieth v Hovland & Wiesberger 2UP (8)

Neither Justin Thomas or Bernd Wiesberger cover themselves in glory with their approaches to the eighth green.

Thomas does slightly better, firing pin-high but 30 feet to the right, flirting with the edge of the green. A couple of yards further right and he'd have been tumbling down towards Lake Michigan.

Wiesberger is straighter, but short, about 55 feet short. He's left Viktor Hovland with a horror putt, up and over a ridge.

The ball is on its way. The line is great, the speed is great... the ball clatters into the pin. Gimme par.

Jordan Spieth from across the green. Not enough juice. No concession. Thomas made to putt in from inside two feet.

    Cantlay & Schauffele v Westwood & Fitzpatrick 1UP (6)

Matt Fitzpatrick has a chance to hole this from about 10 feet to win the hole - it was looking good but it just flirts with the edge.

Oooh - they will not concede it from a couple of feet out. No, of course not!

Lee Westwood putts to halve the hole.

    Iain Carter
Golf commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Oh the Americans are feeling the pressure - an unforced error from Cantlay on the par four sixth- and that was greeted by absolute silence by the fans!

Bit of concern though as they are in the bunker and Europe have a birdie chance.

Usually you hear roars and groans from nearby holes at a golf event. Unless it is a European success at the Ryder Cup.

Sat behind the eighth green, you did not hear a sound from about 500 yards inland - where Sergio Garcia chipped in on the ninth.

In fact, the first we heard of it was when a European fan broke the news after listening to the commentary on his radio.

The noise levels certainly rocketed when Paul Casey duffed his chip, though.

  16. Johnson & Morikawa take four-shot leadpublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    4UP Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hatton (8)

Tyrrell Hatton and Paul Casey end up putting up a double on the eighth - according to the leaderboard.

Casey shanking a chip before conceding suggests it could be even worse than that.

Never going to be good enough in a million years. Unless they can sort their problems out off the tee this match could be done very early.

  17. Birdie wins the hole for Europepublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    Cantlay & Schauffele v Westwood & Fitzpatrick 1UP (5)

What is hapenning here? Xander Schauffele looks a little bemused as he misses a bit of a sitter for a birdie.

Matt Fitzpatrick to putt at around four feet to win the hole with a birdie - and it is IN!

From one down to one up - the scoreboard is looking a little more healthy.

  19. Superb Garcia chip draws Europe level in opening matchpublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    Koepka & Berger A/S Garcia & Rahm (9)

    What. A. Shot.

The home fans are giving Jon Rahm plenty as he walks towards the ninth after his approach to the green is short by seven or eight yards.

Not sure it's too advisable to rile him or his pal Sergio, who responds in sensational fashion by chipping in.

"Vamos", shouts a clearly pumped Garcia. The paring described as Europe's heartbeat are back in business as Daniel Berger misses a 10-footer to halve the hole.

    Thomas & Spieth v Hovland & Wiesberger 2UP (7)

Justin Thomas loves a big emotional outburst and his eyes look like they're going to pop out of his head as he celebrates a 12-foot par putt on the 225-yard par-three seventh.

That puts the pressure on Bernd Wiesberger, who has an eight-footer to halve the hole. Pulled it left.

    The American fans go wild.
