  1. Casey & Hatton reduce their deficitpublished at 14:25 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    2UP Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hatton (4)

The last I saw of Tyrrell Hatton and Paul Casey, they were waving their arms right and shouting 'fore' on the tee at the fourth.

But they are very much back in business. A good lie allows Casey to nip an iron shot into the back of the green and two putts are enough for par.

For a change, Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa were strangely erratic there and always out of position.

  2. Rahm was 'trying to force it'published at 14:21 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    2UP Koepka & Berger v Garcia & Rahm (4)

Watching Jon Rahm on the fifth - his second shot. It was maybe five yards short of dry land.

He was going for the green when he was conscious that the Americans had missed the fairway with their tee shot. Trying to force it.

    2UP Koepka & Berger v Garcia & Rahm (4)

A bit of good news. Now followed by some bad..

Jon Rahm's approach with a long iron is a yard short and make that familiar splashing sound as it drops into the water. The Spaniard looks bemused by that.

The hole might not be a lost cause quite yet, though, as Daniel Berger duffed his tee shot into the sand and Brooks Koepka wasn't able to get close with his second.

    Cantlay & Schauffele A/S Westwood & Fitzpatrick (1)

Lee Westwood on the second is in the bunker plays the second shot and lays it up probably around 100 yards from the flag - onto the narrowest part of the fairway - so well placed.

But here comes Xander Schauffele - who was outstanding yesterday. He gets onto the putting surface - he's probably about 40 feet out.

    Advantage... U-S-A.

  5. Europe double lead in match threepublished at 14:16 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    Thomas & Spieth v Wiesberger & Hovland 2UP (3)

On to the third for match three and Justin Thomas is the man hitting from the tee. He's left his playing partner Jordan Spieth in all sorts of trouble, missing the green to the left.

Former pro Andrew Murray says on commentary that if he get this within 15 feet he's going to do well.

Spieth tries to bump it up the hill and gets that horribly wrong and he doesn't make the green. Thomas can't chip in for par.

Can Europe capitalise? They have two putts from 15 feet to win the hole. Surely... Hovland knocks it the side of the hole.

If anyone tries to tell you golf isn’t physically demanding then send them over to Whistling Straits.

It’s a long, undulating course with more ups and downs than Formby beach.

After walking 27 holes yesterday - but not swinging a club, of course - I did 21,144 steps which equates to 13.5km. As well as climbing the equivalent of 41 floors.

Good job these players - especially Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Dustin Johnson and Patrick Cantlay who played 36 holes and are back out this morning, are fitter than me.

Hope they stuck their feet in an ice bucket before bed last night.

Europe win the fourth courtesy of Jon Rahm's superb chip.

  8. 'We need to eat back into that lead'published at 14:09 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

European captain Padraig Harrington was asked about the difference between the sides on the first tee by Sky Sports: "Putts it comes down to that and creating momentum. The Americans played well but they holed their putts and we didn't. My guys played great, they had a great attitude.

"Clearly there are 20 points left. We are four points down. We need to eat back into that lead. It would be nice if we could win this session. Even if it is a point gained per session we need to be there or thereabouts on Sunday.

On leaving Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood on the sidelines for the foursomes: "We have a lot of players playing well. I am happy with the partnerships.

"To push Rory out this morning and make him play five times that would be an awful lot. Risking him back out on the golf course and tiring him out...Tommy did well yesterday and will come into play for the fourballs in the afternoon."

    Thomas & Spieth v Wiesberger & Hovland 1UP (2)

Bernd Wiesberger knocks in a 15-footer for birdie on the second. Always good to get in the hole first and put the pressure on your opponent.

Justin Thomas, from about a foot closer... nailed it. Hole halved.

    Cantlay & Schauffele A/S Westwood & Fitzpatrick (1)

Lee Westwood having to putt through the shadows of the camera towers. He's looking for an opening birdie but it just flirts with the side of the hole.

That will not be conceded so Matt Fitzpatrick marks it up - but it does open the door for the Americans.

Up steps Patrick Cantlay from about seven feet out - oh and he has drifted to the left.

Fitzpatrick with a tiddler putt nicely in - and we are all square at the first.

  11. US' fast start continuespublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    3UP Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hatton (3)

Blimey. The fast US start continues.

And they have Dustin Johnson to thank. He's been a magician with his irons over the last 24 hours and he spins a deft chip from the fringe towards the cup and then watches it roll right into the heart of it.

It means Tyrrell Hatton is faced with an almost impossible task of doing the same from the rough and a rather large banking straight in his face.

He gets it within four feet, ordinarily the Englishman would be delighted with that. Instead he barely flickers an emotion, trundling straight off towards the fourth tee deep in discussion with Paul Casey.

    3UP Koepka & Berger v Garcia & Rahm (3)

Is this a chance for Europe? Jon Rahm serves up a delicious chip zipping his ball down to within a foot of the pin on the fourth. A par surely.

Meanwhile, a poor approach from Daniel Berger has left Brooks Koepka in the sand.

  13. Postpublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    Cantlay & Schauffele v Westwood & Fitzpatrick

Lee Westwood is first up to the tee - he paddles his feet and cracks that down onto the fairway - nice and safe on the short stuff to the sound of deafening... silence!

Patrick Cantlay steps up with his natty bobble hat. He acts up to the crowd to be boisterous for this shot.

Ohhh not as safe - if bounces off to the left and into the less hospitable rough. A slight advantage to Europe.

Almost a copy and paste job talking of European woe.

Never a good sign when a player tees off on a par three and the television camera cuts to the green and there is no sign of a ball.

Looks like Paul Casey has duffed that one left of the green where long grass and bunkers await.

As in the opening match, it is just mistake after mistake from Europe at the moment.

    Cantlay & Schauffele v Westwood & Fitzpatrick

Where oh where will Europe get points?

Well hopefully we will see plenty of this from veteran Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick.

They battled well on Friday morning's session to battle back from a slow start to the day by the turn but slipped up at the start of the back nine.

They tied the rest but could not recover from that point.

We need to see a lot more of these in triumph today....

    2UP Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hatton (2)

Europe in big trouble on the second. The 'Big Mo' firmly going with the hosts.

The Europeans were in bother the moment Tyrrell Hatton found the sand off the tee.

Collin Morikawa is the man reaping the benefits of another sumptuous Dustin Johnson iron shot.

  17. European blue on the boardpublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    Spieth & Thomas v Wiesberger & Hovland 1UP (1)

Jordan Spieth is a little aggressive with the second for the Americans on hole one. The ball slides through the green and nestles into the collar of the first and second cut off the back.

Viktor Hovland, from the fairway, flicks a wedge in to six feet.

Justin Thomas nudges his chip towards the hole but it stays up.

A rare early chance for some European blue... Bernd Wiesberger, from five feet... YES!

Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia have a huge task ahead of them.

The difference between the match of Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter - is that the Americans are doing it against the heartbeat of the European team.

That'll do nicely as far as Brooks Koepka is concerned. A conservative putt towards the pin pulls up close enough to seal another hole for the Americans.

    Far too easy this.

You know that fast start which Europe needed? Not happened in the first couple of holes. And those American birdies have further buoyed the home fans.

Tony Finau - who I'm appointing as the coolest man in golf - whips them up even more with an Icelandic-style thunderclap. Not that they need it.
