    2UP Koepka & Berger v Garcia & Rahm (2)

Jon Rahm opens up the face of his club and flops a chip over a huge banking on to the third green.

That looks okay. Hold on here it goes, his oh crickey, the ball just runs on and on rolling right off the green into the first cut.

Sergio Garcia clips a nice response to within gimme range but a bogey is all Europe can muster.

    Thomas & Spieth v Wiesberger & Hovland

Bernd Wiesberger, the first Austrian to play in the Ryder Cup, is up first for Europe and he pings one straight down the middle.

Justin Thomas, his heart beat pumping at around 130 beats per minute, is out with the driveer. He goes slightly right, into the first cut of rough. Slight downhill lie.

    2UP Koepka & Berger v Garcia & Rahm (2)

Absolute shocker. Sergio Garcia goes left on the par-three third and leaves Jon Rahm with a horrible looking shot back on from a downslope in the rough.

A dreadful start for the European pair gets even worse.

Daniel Berger is putting his hood up to putt.

There were high hopes for Europe that Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia could start a comeback but they up against it already.

    2UP Koepka & Berger v Garcia & Rahm (2)

What a start. Two holes and American duo Brooks Koepka and Daniel Berger are two up.

The cheer for Sergio Garcia's missed birdie putt was almost as loud as the one that sounded as Berger rolled in another hole-winning putt.

    Thomas & Spieth v Hovland & Wiesberger

Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth combined for three points from four appearances together in defeat in Paris in 2018.

They came into this Ryder Cup as the top US pairing but were soundly beaten 3&1 by Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm in the early foursomes and then Spieth was rested for the later fourballs.

Thomas picked up a half-point with Patrick Cantlay, fighting back from three down after eight against Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland.

For Europe, rookies Bernd Weisberger and Viktor Hovland are playing together for the first time. Hovland played in both sessions yesterday, but could only muster that half-point.

On paper, this has US win written all over it... what do you think? Thumbs up for a Europe point, thumbs down for a US triumph.

  7. Johnson & Morikawa edge aheadpublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    1UP Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hatton (1)

"That was so close," says Tyrrell Hatton, who floats a lovely shot into the first but it doesn't quite roll as expected coming up a yard or so shy of the ridge which would have propelled his ball onwards.

It leaves Paul Casey with a long putt he can't convert.

Dustin Johnson superbly lofts a wedge into three feet allowing Collin Morikawa to do the rest.

    Another early US lead.

Not many European fans about on the first tee - apart from our Nottingham Uni alumni friends (see 12:47 entry)!

As usual, they're making themselves heard with a variety of songs which are much more imaginative than those from their American rivals.

"Doo-doo-doo, we've got Ty-rrell Hat-ton!" - to the sound of the song dedicated to footballer Niger Reo-Coker - is my personal favourite.

Even Padraig Harrington can't stop laughing at that one.

    1UP Koepka & Berger v Garcia & Rahm (1)

Sergio Garcia plays Europe's second in this alternate-shot format on the second.

He's down the right of this 593-yard monster par five and doesn't quite reach the green.

Daniel Berger, hood now down, scoots his iron shot on to the front edge to give his playing partner Dustin Johnson, a long-range eagle chance.

    Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hatton

"It's just in the rough on the right," Paul Casey tells his playing partner Tyrrell Hatton as he walks back from the first tee.

It's not too bad mind, Hatton will fancy making the green from there.

Nor is Collin Morikawa's opening drive which ends up in the first cut down the left.

    Johnson & Morikawa v Casey & Hatton

Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton are sharing a few gags on the first tee.

Hatton hit some delicious approaches in Friday's fourballs, if he can can replicate that form today Casey could be the man to tidy them up.

Big ask to take down Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa mind.

US captain Steve Stricker walks out to the first tee with rapturous applause, and the chanting of his name, ringing in his ears.

He responds by making a 'W' - for Wisconsin - with his thumbs and index fingers.

That W could also represent 'win' for Team USA. And the joyous cheers which greet Berger's birdie putt up ahead tell us the Americans fans are supremely confident that is going to happen tomorrow.

Daniel Berger had his hood up , he must have the spirit of Obi Wan Kenobi - the Force is strong in this one!

Berger pickles this ball down in for a birdie in the first. One up.

  14. Koepka & Berger birdie the first to move aheadpublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    1UP Koepka & Berger v Garcia & Rahm (1)

Quite a lot of dew on the green as Daniel Berger, hood up, rolls in a birdie putt for the hosts from six feet.

For a second it looked as though that was going to hold up and give Europe a reprieve but in it dropped.

Lovely shot from Brooks Koepka who dollies his pitch on at the first down to within a few feet of the pin.

Birdie chance coming for the US as Jon Rahm overcooks his sand wedge and flies through the green.

More boos for the European players as their names are announced on the first tee.

Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm stand there defiantly, though. The Spanish comrades put their arms affectionately around each other's midriffs.

It was a message that 'your noise can't break our bond'.

    Koepka & Berger v Garcia & Rahm

More boos for Sergio Garcia and John Rahm as they are announced.

Not a shred of etiquette. Garcia laps it all up and the blasts his tee shot well left into the sand.

Daniel Berger, replies for the hosts with a booming drive right down the middle.

The men have tried to take a leaf from the women in the Solheim Cup who were very stoic.

I think you have to try and be yourself, if you are trying to concentrate on your golf and your persona something is going to give.

Sergio Garcia is not going to change. It is hostile. It was not nice to hear the European players being booed on to the tee. I don't think we have heard that before. That was not nice. I thought that was poor, booing before they had even hit a shot.

    MJ IN DA HOUSE!

The entire grandstand chants the name of the GOAT/#23/Air Jordan as the NBA legend appears on the side of the first tee.

Michael Jordan is heading into hospitality, perhaps for a cigar and a breakfast beer.

Although with a handicap in low singles figures - and that intense competitive nature - he'd probably back himself to do a job for Team USA from the tee.

It's almost time. Huge boos from the home fans as European captain Padraig Harrington steps on to the first tee with Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm.

The first of two sessions coming up that Europe simply cannot afford to lose.
