Europe have vowed to fightback after falling 6-2 behind.

Only time will tell if they're actually able to do that against an energised US team but captain Padraig Harrington is certainly quite bullish about their hopes.

"You can't just turn around and try to eat into a lead straightaway in one session," Harrington said.

"It would be lovely if it happened, but you can't think like that. You've got to do it slowly, one step at a time.

"We've got 20 points to play for and we've got to prepare ourselves for at this stage a long battle. If we're going to get this done, it's going to be a very tight one."

Once the DJ departs following a bit of Queen, the silence is punctured by a voice asking if the home fans should sing the US national anthem.

Everyone agrees. An acapella version of the Star Spangled Banner begins, with hands on heart as the verses are belted out.

The anthem finishes with everyone waving their hand-held Stars and Stripes flags. Then the customary chant of 'U-S-A'.

    Not heard any Europeans yet...

  5. Stricker tells US players to 'keep foot down'published at 12:49 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

Got to say Steve Stricker comes across really well as the US captain.

His selections on Friday were right on the money and he has been reminding his team to stay grounded despite the huge lead they have taken.

"It's a great start. We are very happy with the start,2 Stricker said.

"But my message to the guys is Saturday is a new day. Let's just go out and try to win that first session again and pretend Friday never happened.

"Let's keep our foot down and continue to play the golf that we know we can play.

"We've had some things that came up and bit us in the rear in other Ryder Cups, so these guys know that and they are focused on coming out strong again."

Very few Europeans have been able to make the trip to Wisconsin, but this lot have been managing to create some noise in support of the visitors.

Chris Scott-Batey is an Englishman from Newcastle and has made the trip with his old uni mates.

"We're all friends from Nottingham University, where we met 25 years ago. We have always hooked up every Ryder Cup and had a golf trip ourselves," he tells BBC Sport.

"We put the kit on for Celtic Manor and since then we have always dressed up and sung songs. We've had a great reception from the Americans - they are so welcoming. You get one or two who give you a boo or a heckle, but generally it is great."

The group are easy to spot dressed as retro golfers in bright yellow and blue. Yesterday I saw them getting plenty of attention - and good-natured stick from the home fans - as Europe toiled.

Nothing like biting cold air and techno tunes to wake you up on Saturday morning at the Ryder Cup.

While it is not quite as popping on the first tee as it was yesterday, the DJ presses play on Zombie Nation - the one adopted by Wales football fans - to get things pumping.

Tiger Woods might be around 1,500 miles away from Whistling Straits, recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident in February but he's still having an influence on proceedings at Whistling Straits.

Woods, who would have featured as either a player or on captain Steve Stricker's staff sent a motivational text to the team on Thursday evening and it looks like did the trick.

"We had a nice message from Tiger," said Olympic champion Xander Schauffele, who claimed the first of his two points alongside fellow rookie Patrick Cantlay in a 5&3 win over Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter.

"I'm obviously not going to reveal what it said, but Pat and I knew. We referred to it a few times today and we knew what we needed to do.

"We knew he was fist-pumping from the couch. Whether he was on crutches or not, he's as fired up as any back at home. It's nice to have his support."

Cantlay, who won the FedEx Cup earlier this month added: "There is no better role model and no better leader," than Woods, who is "somebody that you can always learn from".

"I saw him last week at home and just picked his brain on Ryder Cup and applied some of that here."

  11. How Europe's fighting spirit was formedpublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport at Whistling Straits

If Europe are going to turn this deficit around then they will need every bit of that famous fighting spirit and camaraderie which has been synonymous with the team over the past 40 years.

(As well as some excellent golf, of course.)

There has long been a narrative of the star-studded Americans struggling to gel and form a bond like their European rivals, leading to defeats which did not look like happening on paper.

"I've said this so many times but it is still nevertheless true: the Ryder Cup is an opportunity for Europe's golfers to show just because America has got the wealth, the courses, the weather, that they haven't cornered ambition," said

Tony Jacklin, who captained Europe to their first triumph on US soil in 1987, is widely credited for transforming the team's fortunes in the event.

Read how the Englishman changed the team's culture, helping Europe to win or retain 12 of the past 17 events.

  13. Putts win pointspublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 25 September 2021

When it comes to golf at this level it's pretty much a given that everyone playing is at an exceptional standard. But putts win points so to speak.

    • Over 15 feet putts made by the US in Friday's fourballs = 11
    • Over 15 feet putts made by Europe in Friday's fourballs = four

Europe not quite on it at the business end.

It all started so well for Europe with Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm taking down the top US pairing of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas in the opening match of the Ryder Cup on Friday.

That would be the one and only match Padraig Harrington's side would win all day though as Steve Stricker's home side produced some superb golf that the visitors simply had no answer for.

Rory McIlroy has been left out of a Ryder Cup session for the first time in his career after losing both his matches on Friday's opening day.

The Northern Irishman, who was beaten 5&3 in his foursomes match with Ian Poulter and 4&3 with Shane Lowry, will sit out Saturday's opening foursomes.

McIlroy, 32, had played in 26 straight matches since making his debut in 2010.

Despite leaving him out, Europe captain Padraig Harrington said he "could not have asked more" from McIlroy.

"The golf didn't go as well as he would have liked, but I'm not second-guessing him for a second in terms of his leadership and what he does for my team," Harrington added.

We are just under an hour from the first ball being hit on day two but the stands around the first tee are open and fans are filing in.

It's not quite the rush of day one, but there's still a healthy number in there already, with room for 3,500 fans.

The horseshoe nature of the stand means there are three sides. Yesterday, we had the left side shouting "U", the middle "S" and no prizes for guessing what the right side shouted.

There was also a sensational "I believe that we will win" chant. Expect plenty more of that this morning
