  3. 'A great finish' - Nordqvistpublished at 19:21 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

A little more from our champion about that thrilling finish:

"I definitely was wearing out my heartbeats there at the end. I think it’s a great finish. The wind died down a little bit but it can play pretty brutal. I think it’s been a key that I played those last four really well all week.

"It’s not easy shots but Carnoustie’s a great venue. It’s been one of my favourites since I played in 2011 and for us to be able to come back here, I think its amazing.

"Hopefully this is not the last time the Open comes back here."

  4. 'A lot of hard times makes this sweeter' - Nordqvistpublished at 19:19 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

Let's hear a little of what Anna has to say as she talks to Sky Sports at the trophy presentation:

"I’ve been waiting on this one for a while. I haven’t won in a couple of years. There’s been a lot of downs, a lot of hard times so I think this makes it feel even sweeter .

"I’ve had my husband Kevin (McAlpine) there for me every single year since Evian, since I won last time (in 2017), Paul Cormack my caddie, he’s been my rock on the golf course, and always been there for me .

"I could only dream about winning the [Women’s] Open. Congrats Louise (Duncan), fantastic play. I was there in 2008 and little did I know that a couple of years later with a lot of dreams and a lot of hard work – so happy to be here.

And the Scottish connection was a great help!

"My husband’s 20 minutes away from here. I was supposed to get married just 20 minutes from here.

"This place is truly special. I’ve never seen Carnoustie in this great of a shape so AIG, R&A and everyone’s done such a great job.

"I love the fans being back, having a great atmosphere so thank you so much."

  5. The 2021 Women's Open championpublished at 19:11 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

A well-deserved victory for Anna Nordqvist - the day started off as a birdie fest but it ended up as a war of attrition and she managed to keep her cool when the challengers just couldn't.

  6. Duncan finishes as top amateurpublished at 19:05 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

Louise Duncan performed wonders this week at Carnoustie and while it wasn't quite to be the supreme fairytale, the 21-year-old has still finished the week as the top amateur in the field.

    Not a bad effort overall....

  7. Spare a thought for Madsen...published at 19:02 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

Nanna Koerstz Madsen was one good swing from possibly becoming the first Dane to win a major, and ended up dropping down into a tie for fifth after a horrible double bogey.

The bunker shot was a tough one to say the least and it was a cruel way for such a splendid tournament to end for here.

To make matters worse, it looks as though those two dropped shots could see her fall out of the Solheim Cup places - but after that effort she surely has a case for a captain's pick?

  8. Third major for Nordqvistpublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

Anna Nordqvist won her first major back in 2009 with the LPGA Championship, before adding the 2017 Evian Championship and now the Women's Open.

It'll be a seventh straight Solheim Cup appearance next month as well for her after a tremendous weekend from the Swede.

    Nordqvist -12, Madsen -11 (F)

It's there! Nordqvist almost holes for birdie but most importantly the ball is cosied right up to the edge of the hole, she marks and lets Madsen finish off for a double bogey before returning to tap in.

Nordqvist duly knocks it in with a beaming smile on her face to claim a tense and dramatic one shot victory at Carnoustie.

  11. Two putts to win...published at 18:45 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

    Nordqvist -12, Madsen -12 (17)

It's a nice recovery from Madsen, but two putts to win the Women's Open for Anna Nordqvist.

    Madsen -12, Nordqvist -12 (17)

The difficulty tarrif was off the scale with that shot Madsen faced, with a downhill lie in the sand, a bunker to get over and out of bounds across the other side of the green.

She was never confident, and that showed as she thinned it wildly to the right and into the rough behind the green.

That's an awfully sad way for her chances of winning the Women's Open to end, she needs to compose herself now...

  13. Advantage Anna!published at 18:39 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

    Madsen -12, Nordqvist -12 (17)

The Women's Open may just have been decided by a wayward approach shot from Nanna Madsen, who blocks out here iron miles right and into the bunker, only just in the bunker as well and looks like she's left with a horrid downhill lie in there.

Nordqvist is safely on the green and two putts from here look right now to be enough for here to win the title.

  14. 'I loved every minute of it' - Duncanpublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

    Duncan -7 (F)

    Louise DuncanImage source, Getty

Many will agree, Louise Duncan has been one of the stars of this week, and here's what she had to say to Sky Sports:

"I’m over the moon with how I played and I couldn’t be any more proud of myself. I’m a wee bit disappointed with the finish there but it’s to be expected. 72 is still a great score on Sunday.

"I was a wee bit nervous (at the start) and felt a wee bit sick actually but once I rolled in this par (on the first) I felt fine. Even coming down the last I was absolutely fine, I wasn’t nervous at all."

Did three solid rounds previously help?

"I was just getting used to the surroundings (on the first three days), people watching constantly, and getting used to the noise – it will stand me in good stead for the Curtis Cup.

"Just a big thank you (to all fans and supporters). I loved every minute of it and I can’t thank you enough."

  15. Drives away on the lastpublished at 18:35 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

    Madsen -12, Nordqvist -12 (17)

You've got to hand it to them, the pair of our contenders have stood up, looked down this fearsome 18th hole at Carnoustie and just hit the pants off their drives. Tremendous stuff.

Nordqvist goes first - firing her tee ball at those bunkers on the right but finding the fairway nicely enough.

Madsen muscles a high draw down the left hand side, where it settles just in the first cut but safe enough. Game very much on.

  16. All down to 18published at 18:32 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

    Madsen -12, Nordqvist -12 (17)

    The tension grows...

Neither of them helped themselves here by leaving a couple of horrible little knee knockers for par putts - you'd never give them in your Saturday matchplay with your mates, let alone on the 71st hole of a major.

But they both hold their nerve to send them home and on they go to the last tied at the top on 12 under.

  17. Postpublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

    Madsen -12, Nordqvist -12 (16)

Nordqvist is on the green on the 17th in regulation, with Madsen just off the left edge, similar to where Salas was moments ago - and almost chipped in from by the way!

They're going toe-to-toe these two now and it's brilliant entertainment - how's your nerves now?

  18. The state of play - latest leaderboardpublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

    Women's Open final day

    -11 G Hall (F), M Sagstrom (F), L Salas (17)

    -10 M Lee (F)

    -9 L Harm (F), P Tavatanakit (F)

    Selected others:

    -7 , L Duncan (F)

    -6 N Korda (F)

  19. Sagstrom slips up on the lastpublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

    Sagstrom -11 (F)

Well, it was a brave effort from Madelene Sagstrom but the 18th has been her downfall as she can't sink her par putt and she drops to 11 under to join Georgia Hall in the clubhouse.

Both of them no have to wait and see if Madsen or Nordqvist can negotiate this tough closing stretch without dropping shots to stand a chance with a play-off.

  20. Almost for Annapublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

    Nordqvist -12, Madsen -12 (16)

Wow! Anna Nordqvist was millimetres away from possibly taking this title as she was within a roll or two of sinking an absolute monster of a birdie putt on the 16th.

Her tee shot was well short, but there's no way she would be chipping from just off the green given her struggles with her wedges, but the flat stick almost did the trick with a wonderful tacking effort that came oh so close to dropping.
